Rooted to the bottom of the table, MK Dons arrived at the Valley in poor form to face a Charlton side with a bit of momentum after three straight wins. Ben Garner made a couple of changes to the side, resting Sessignon for Clare on the left, and moving Rak-Saki in behind or next to Stockley. The change proved troublesome to say the least, as we pushed down the left time and time again, but Clare’s lack of a left foot constantly stymied us. MKD were content to leave us possession and counter, which led to three chances in the first half that they should have done much better with. We went into the break even.
The second half saw a bit more drama than the first. Ryan Innis, already on a yellow card, was adjudged to have brought down their striker and MKD were given a penalty. Innis was sent off. Was it a foul, or was Innis merely stronger? Was it in the box? A good case can be made that the foul was outside the box. Nonetheless, MKD dispatched the penalty to take the lead and finish out the match against ten men.
A few changes were made, with Sessignon and Aneke coming on. We looked a little better and attacked with more impetus, but it was never going to be enough.
To compound matters, MKD scored from a well taken free kick to kill the game and take all three points.
Truth be told, with the lion’s share of possession, we barely troubled their keeper. I fear that, rather than a lack of confidence, we approach matches as though we’re better than we actually are. I don’t think we could afford to rest Sessignon, to effectively play a weaker partnership down the left, as we needed a good start to put pressure on MKD and compound their insecurities. We didn’t do that, perhaps because we’re too clever by half.

We got better recently because we had our best two full-backs on the pitch.
We then play today without one and look awful, i'm sure it's not a coincidence.41 -
Why anyone would clap Innis off is beyond me. Get rid of him ffs, gave the ball away twice under no pressure whatsoever and then rightly gets sent off.19

Stockley needs to sit…..hopeless footballer20

Typical Charlton.1

Awful. Draw a line under it, never play Clare at LB again, move onto Saturday.

Inniss is a liability & I fail to see what anyone sees in Kirk. That is all.
Goodnight10 -
Absolute shit.
Let's all blame the ref
Bla bla bla.
I fucking hate supporting us at times5 -
Spotted HMS piss the league....35 -
Yep. We weren't so bad until the red card, but Clare just destroyed all our play down the left. Not remotely his position. We can't afford to play him there. The rest? Well, bad day at the office I'd say27

Curbs and Leaburn in agreement that Inniss red card and penalty was the pivotal moment.
Done by a penalty that wasn't a penalty (outside the area) and a Bradley Johnson free kick.
If anyone deserved to win the game, it was them, so no massive complaints. Just one of those games.
Confident we'll be better on Saturday against Ipswich.9 - Sponsored links:

Our inability to beat a team that packs out their defence comes to the fore again. Not helped by a forward in Stockley who offers absolutely nothing if you need to unlock a defence. Should never have rested Sess. MK are better than their position in the table and could have beaten us more comfortably but we were clueless in how to break them down.
I really like Innis but he had a shocker tonight before being sent off. Not many positives tonight other than Fraser is a bloody good player.12 -

game was lost before kick off .. a lesson in how one bad selection can throw the whole team out of balance .. everyone seems to know, except Garner and I have said it umpteen times, Clare is a decent footballer but not at full back, he is dodgy on the right, a disaster on the left .. Inniss reverts to type though that was NOT a penalty .. we lose to what was the bottom club, though they were i m o in a false position .. we have had a good run, learn the lessons and move on, still many games to play8

Inniss... Now THAT is a liability on a yellow card...
How can you be sent off four times, in less games than what make up a season?15 -
Game no. 1162 for me and it makes my top 20 shit ones. MK's lack of ambition/tactical nous, meant we had to commit so many men forward...they were always going to hit us on the break.
Thought the Inniss thing was outside the box.
Kirk up front did not work at all and probably only Fraser comes out with any credit for any significant forward thinking...some decent balls through and up to Rak-Sak.
Sessegnon has had his rest now and should keep Clare consigned to the bench for the foreseeable.2 -
Pure Charlton. We were asking for that. The amount of times our centre backs were committing to challenges high up the pitch when we knew their whole game plan was to get in behind us was completely brain dead - it’s the only thing I feel falls squarely at Garner’s feet tonight, he should have addressed it.
Beyond that it was just another showcase of the limitations of our squad unfortunately. As on so many other occasions this season, playing with Stockley up front is like playing with 10 men. He’s a bang average league one player regardless of the system he’s playing in.Sessegnon was a big miss as Clare had to cut back into his right foot every time there was space to be exploited ahead of him. Inniss was a disaster waiting to happen all night and I think everyone in the ground could have predicted what was going to happen. Payne was really poor when he came on too.
There is a clear theme emerging of our season. Teams that come to The Valley to play football will get beaten, every single other team we will lack the quality to break down. Unfortunately I can’t see that changing with our transfer window prospects in January.
Time to get over it now and get behind them on Saturday because they’re going to need it.10 -

We lost because we only had 1 shot on target against the team bottom of the table.41 -
Charlton Athletic - Kick-starting your season since 1905!7

Garner very level headed in his analysis, couple of digs at the ref though.1

Garner blames ref shock

Square pegs in round holes. Clare is not a left back . Kirk is not a striker and Campbell is a right sided winger . We totally deserved to lose . Well done to MK Dons. Garner fucked up - we move on.
MK deserved it and Dean Lewington is an amazing player for a 38 year old .
