Edit; not forgetting Eddie Firmani of course to Sampdoria 1955.3 -
I am confident we will be significantly better than last year at will be at least challenging for a play off place.Themightyath2 said:Maybe I’m in the minority, but i actually feel quite positive about the season ahead, and have really enjoyed the football so far this season, granted it couldn’t get much worse.
This league is extremely tight, team morale and togetherness is important and it feels like we have that this year.
Yes we could do with another LB, CB and Striker, but no one should be demanding it.None of us know the financial ins and outs and ultimately it’s not our money to spend.I could do with a couple more team members at work to take our service levels up to the next level, but I won’t get that, there are financial constraints that I have to work within.I’m confident will be in and around the playoffs.
I am not demanding a striker but we have been a striker short since Chuks left 20 months ago. Yes we resigned him but have lost Ronnie, Davison and Washington since.
I can not get my head round the fact we have used up the budget and need to move a player, who's contract we renewed 10 weeks ago, to free up wages.
Since we last increased the number of strikers at the club we have signed 7 central midfielders and lost 3 strikers.
I think it's fair to be frustrated at least. Like I said earlier a couple of 100k is a lot of money, but not relatively to our wage bill it isn't.4 -
Exactly, Garner has already confirmed that we don't have the budget to bring in another striker while admitting " everyone would like an additional striker". We seem to have recruited well this summer & in the new set up we are creating chances but just not taking them. We are all aware that sandgaard has cut the budget & is cost cutting across the board but it just seems crazy that having assembled an attacking team we are neglecting the final piece of the jigsaw. Whatever anyone thinks of Stockley he can't do it all alone, he needs help & an additional striker who can come on & replace or play as a two up front. Leaburn has done well but he's a boy stepping up into a mans game & needs looking after, it's too much to expect him to turn on a performance week after week. I wonder if we yet again fail to deliver & end up outside the top 6 who sandgaard will blame this time ?golfaddick said:
Players are always available for a price. Might have to push the boat out but spending an extra £250k now might mean not losing £8m next season (if we are still stuck in this division).Exiled_Addick said:
We need a striker who can play up top on their own and is, at least, better than Leaburn. If players fitting that bill are too expensive, not interested in joining us, or their current club will not sell, what would you like Charlton to do about that?Croydon said:
Stockley will 100% miss games this season due to injury or suspension. Leaburn is far too raw to be first choice when that happens and we simply can't be reliant on Aneke having one of his runs of actually being fit at the time. We need a strikerExiled_Addick said:
IF. It’s not definitely going to happen so the management team has to balance that risk against what it will cost to sign a striker that will be worth actually adding to the wage bill. And whatever the bed wetting doom mongers will say, Aneke will be available for selection at some point.up_the_valley said:
If Stockley or Leaburn get injured we are up creek.... we need another striker.Exiled_Addick said:Perhaps it’s a case they have enquired about strikers but the ones they think will be an improvement on Stockley, who is doing better than some
will give him credit for, or Leaburn, who looks better than I think a lot of us expected, are out of reach. No point signing someone just for the sake of it.Or perhaps they just want to play their cards very close to their chest for fear of losing a deal by it becoming public knowledge too early. We’ll find out in a couple of weeks.
Ideally we would be able to sign a decent striker, but this isn’t like January 2019 when we were playing 2 up front and sold Grant to leave us with only Taylor and the injured Vetokele so had to sign Parker because he was all we could get. Right now we have two decent, fit options for one position. If we just sign someone for the sake of it they might end being unused and unwanted and then, in January, maybe a better option comes on the market but we already spent our budget on the d-list option.
it’s made out like it’s a black and white decision but it’s not.
Now, I don’t know for certain that that is the case, but there’s an assumption by some that the club haven’t even tried to sign a striker but I find that hard to believe. And there’s been nothing official to say they aren’t trying, just perhaps they aren’t confident they can make the deal they want happen. As fans on here, we’ve only identified 3 players that would fit the bill - Stockton (question marks over how good he really is and Morecambe don’t seem keen to sell), Simpson (now looks like he’s Championship bound), and Wilks (probably out of price range).
You can need something all you want, but if what you need isn’t available then you might have no choice than to make do without it.7 -
Bugger. I thought I saw a transfer rumour about some guy from Shrewsbury, but the thread morphed and next thing I knew. It was Zynex share value.
Sigh0 -
Aaron Pierre looks an interesting option. He was Poty at Shrewsbury the year before last and as a left footer he offers us something different.0

I see latest Tyreece Simpson rumours are that Huddersfield will win the race bit may then loam him to L1. Barnsley and Peterborough linked.but you would think we would look at that if possible.4

What I thought really. My main take away was we haven't got disposable cash in the budget to pay a transfer fee for a player when we have at least two players on the wage bill that the manager doesn't want to be here (Gilbey and JFC... and possibly McGillivray too) and potentially at least another one that had been budgeted not to be here (Kirk). We presumably knew that Garner rates McKirdy based in the tune he got out of him last season. We also knew we need to churn the squad to see more inflow. I'm not sure there's anything new apart from to actually put in black and white that Garner would like to bring McKirdy in if he could.DOUCHER said:I actually see that interview by garner as moving us a step closer to signing mkirdy - if u take all the fluff out of the interview it basically says publicly that garner wants to sign him - everything else we already knew about really1 -
I can't see Huddersfield buying a player from one division below them to immediately loan him out again. They don't have the sort of financial resources to do that, they need to improve their current sideAthletico Charlton said:I see latest Tyreece Simpson rumours are that Huddersfield will win the race bit may then loam him to L1. Different level but they signed Kyle Hudlin from Solihull (5th tier) and loaned him to Wimbledon. You'd think Simpson would be a similar signing, a player for the future rather than to immediately improve their first team.killerandflash said:

11 of their last 15 seasons in L1 so yeah most of the time in L1. I’ll have word with my Posh supporting mate for giving me duff info on their losses.supaclive said:

It’s so simple, why doesn’t every club do that.supaclive said:If TS doesn't want to lose £8m next year he should invest money in acquiring two saleable assets that appreciate in value.
That way he won't be wasting money, he'll be investing it.
The more wins. The higher gate receipts, Valley pass purchases, TV money, potential Championship promotion.
Buy appreciating assets
Peterborough do it
Brentford do it
McKirdy more likely to not lose value v Stockton
Buy McKirdy
It isn't actually rocket science.
Peterborough still lose around £7-8m a year and have spent most of the last 15 years in L1, we should copy them.
Posh also have not spent most of the last 15 seasons in League 1 and do NOT lose £7-8m per year.
Get your facts right first.....Genuine question though, if it’s so simple and it’s foolproof why doesn’t every club do it?2 -
No, not linked anywhere in the press. In an effort to try getting the rumours thread back on track, I looked at lists of free agent left footed centre backs and he was the most obvious choice after Naby Sarr.Richard J said:

I’d guess the likes of Pierre and McKirdy maybe alternates to Sarr and Simpson.0
-
I feel like we are probably going to get a young PL loan centre back, as they are more likely to fit the ball playing centre back role. I don’t know much about Pierre but looking at his previous clubs I’m not sure he would fit what Garner will want0

Those 2 were non league punts from 3 divisions down for not much money though, like us signing someone from Dartford or WellingForeverAddickted said:

I think almost all the clubs that can afford to do it. Most clubs aren't very good at it then get gittery and become more conservative, the same way most managers do.SouthLincsAddick said:

and going straight to Harrogate on loan. I've wiki'd it and it doesn't mention the loan. Weird!

He definitely didn't go to Harrogate on loan. He was in and around their team but mainly a sub when he first signed, and then last year was a regular.1

Yeah my bad too - I'm glad it isn't just me that remembers that thoughTodds_right_hook said:

That is correct. We tried to sign him. The then Huddersfield manager decided to not send him out on loan and he got in and around the first team.Chris_from_Sidcup said:He definitely didn't go to Harrogate on loan. exactly - having 2 or 3 players sitting doing nothing whilst depreciating in value is poor business so the priority is to offload and put pressure on them to go - buying a striker who may well help add the extra bit needed to get promoted and who should have a sell on value who is recommended by a manager who appears to know his onions is good investment - i expect TS will know that and we will sign a striker regardless of whether we get rid first, regardless of whats being saidISawLeaburnScore said:
