Bomb disposal trainees aren’t in danger. It’s when they stop being trainees that it can get a bit edgy.cafcsinger said:
It's not Chuks fault we spent 300k on him and gave him a three year deal, he may have had the clubs pants down but that's on us, not him. As for a danger to himself, wtf are on about? He's a professional footballer who has played 67 times for us in three seasons, not some bomb disposal trainee.addick1956 said:
I gave that post all the thought it required. This guy has been on life support playing fitness wise since he got back from Birmingham.Redhenry said:

He is never on the bench theses days and is only dangerous to himself.ButtleJR said:
See I felt sorry for him but last season I heard he wasn't too phased about being injured and was happy to watch on from the sidelines. Hopefully once he's fit BG can manage him as he did Williams last season as he's dangerous off the bench.Solidgone said:Am i the only one that actually feels sorry for Chuks and this latest injury setback? Some people on here mock him as though he does this purposely. I know I’d be down in the dumps if this kept happening to me and then social media mocking me I don’t think I’ll be in a good place mentally.
Bowyer had him 5 months and sent him back telling TS he was now fitter. For that £300k was sent the other way.
Portsmouth sent a similar amount to Stanley and got Bishop. 5 goals in 5 games and he hasn't missed one yet.. if you or anyone lse thinks we will get that out of A&Eeke this season...
Tell me Redhenry why either that thought or the one that says he is a danger to himself every time he starts training are wrong and why you see fit to to make a sarcastic 'pick upon comment', which, if made by someone else , you may well have agreed with.
It is either that or Charlton's training regime cripples players and they experience a Lazarus moment at places like Brum.
By the way stick your patronising where the sun doesn't shine, only your wit.6 -
Yeah he had one or two games where everything came off for him and he looked great. But he's had two whole seasons where he's been poor. I feel like it's a large enough data set to make the call that those games were outliers.EpsomAddick said:I think it's a bit harsh to say Gilbey is a poor player at this level, as he has shown that he can dominate games, like the 2-0 win over Ipswich at The Valley last season - just see the player marks thread (https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/93058/players-marks-charlton-v-ipswich-closes-wednesday-teatime/p1). The problem is that he's never done it consistently, and it's clear that he's not in Garner's plans. So I hope we get some sort of a fee for him and use that, plus the freed up wages, on reinforcements elsewhere.
I won't be surprised to see him end up at another League 1 club.

I've just seen an article calling Gilbey, a Charlton STAR. Isn't it time journalists used another word to describe a transfer target.2

Gilbey is soooo frustrating. He looks great when getting hold of the ball and then running with it, causing panic in the opposition, but then more often than not massively over hits the pass. When he gets it right he’s quality, but sadly it isn’t often enough.1
-
He dominated, well not dominated but played well in one game for us.EpsomAddick said:I think it's a bit harsh to say Gilbey is a poor player at this level, as he has shown that he can dominate games, like the 2-0 win over Ipswich at The Valley last season - just see the player marks thread (https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/93058/players-marks-charlton-v-ipswich-closes-wednesday-teatime/p1). It just so happened you highlighted that one game and chose to ignore all the others.
He has been consistent though, consistently poor.2 -
Lots of promise but he unfortunately never delivered on it often enough. If he moves on, will wish him well.1
-
I think there's a good player in there and it just hasn't worked out for some reason. Moving him on along with 1 or 2 others is for the best if it allows us to sign a striker and CB.4

Gilbey is a frustrating player and in a side like Garner's where you want midfielders making runs into the box beyond the strikers he should be ideal.
He did have more than one good game but they were few and far between and Garner seems to think he has better and more suited players for the way we play now so a move would probably be best for everyone.
Good luck to him if he leaves. Don't think anyone could fault his effort.10 -

Goals that don't change the result don't count either

In so much as we are governed by certain rules which is outside our control then it could be construed as being the same thing. However, it is highly likely that Garner has money available to spend within the transfer budget set by TS but can't do so because of the overall expenditure (including salaries) against revenue rules, and in that context it is different.shirty5 said:

I’d expect us to line up deals rather than wait until someone has moved on. Those deals may then fall through if we can’t shift one or two on. Also think it’s more about freeing up wages than adding to our transfer budget.shirty5 said:

It’s funny what happens when you have a coaching set up which does not look to bypass the midfield.Considering on the whole how badly performing people said our midfield was last year (with the exception of Dobbo for obvious reasons of course), and how well oiled they are beginning to look this year - maybe even Gilbey (player of the year two years in a row at ball playing MK Dons) would look better under ‘GarnerBall’.3
-
MKD weren't nearly so ball-playing while Gilbey was there, tbf...1
-
Agreed. I think Gilbey would do really well under Garner, unfortunately for him we are so well stacked in that area that he isn’t at the level we have now.FishCostaFortune said:It’s funny what happens when you have a coaching set up which does not look to bypass the midfield.Considering on the whole how badly performing people said our midfield was last year (with the exception of Dobbo for obvious reasons of course), and how well oiled they are beginning to look this year - maybe even Gilbey (player of the year two years in a row at ball playing MK Dons) would look better under ‘GarnerBall’.0 -
I’m thinking we need to free up wages under SCMP rules in order to make more signings, while a nominal or £1m fee isn’t necessarily going to significantly change what if anything we spend on fees. Therefore we have to let players go, but we don’t have to raise funds to be able to afford fees as the players we’ll let go won’t be ones we can sell for big fees.shirty5 said:

But Garner wants his midfielders to constantly show for the ball, receive it in tight areas and play. That's probably Gilbey's biggest set of weaknesses. Firstly the bravery to not hide and play football, and secondly the technique to keep the ball in tight areas.FishCostaFortune said:It’s funny what happens when you have a coaching set up which does not look to bypass the midfield.Considering on the whole how badly performing people said our midfield was last year (with the exception of Dobbo for obvious reasons of course), and how well oiled they are beginning to look this year - maybe even Gilbey (player of the year two years in a row at ball playing MK Dons) would look better under ‘GarnerBall’.
A few people did predict Gilbey would do well under Garner and yet he's being shipped on, meanwhile Albie Morgan is a starter.5 -
Not sure what they were like under Tisdale, but he did play under Russel Martin whose style makes ‘GarnerBall’ look like prime Sam Allardyce.Leuth said:MKD weren't nearly so ball-playing while Gilbey was there, tbf...0 -

Yes Gilbey would be excellent under Garner. He will go through one one one and lash the ball in the back of the net, because it sounds good.
One of the most disappointing signings for a few years. His hard runs on the right were all he had really, rather than being just one facet of his attacking offerings.2 -
Would that be the Russell Martin who flogged him to Charlton without a second's hesitation?FishCostaFortune said:

Peoples distaste for Gilbey is so funny. I’m not saying he’s all of a sudden going to turn into prime Frank Lampard or we should keep him.Chunes said:

I was observing that our team, midfield in particular, was universally criticised last season. And with that in mind maybe you would see a different player under Garner. After all, as already mentioned, the team that started yesterday contained 9 of the same outfield players as we had last year. It’s a lightly veiled jab at our coaching over the last few years.3 -
Never had a problem with Gilbey, honest footballer, good athlete, but not a good enough passer of the ball for this system.12

Gilbey was magnificent in the game against Ipswich - definitely had an extra Weetabix that day! I agree that he is not a bad player, but he has been very inconsistent (well, more consistently bad) for us. I am not sure why he has under-performed, but he is still a very decent League 1 player when he plays well. Perhaps it is a confidence thing with Alex. He also had long covid too, and perhaps that affected him more than we all realise? I still think it would be best for everyone if he moves on though.EpsomAddick said:I think it's a bit harsh to say Gilbey is a poor player at this level, as he has shown that he can dominate games, like the 2-0 win over Ipswich at The Valley last season - just see the player marks thread (https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/93058/players-marks-charlton-v-ipswich-closes-wednesday-teatime/p1). I understood what you were saying, I was just disagreeing with the idea that he could look any different in this system when it accentuates his weaknesses.FishCostaFortune said:

All the being flipent aside it does make you wonder when Garner decided that the "frozen out three" weren't up to it? Or indeed that's what he actually has decided.ForeverAddickted said:

Why would playing Payne instead of Fraser make us more vulnerable defensively? Fraser is hardly a defensive player.sam3110 said:Payne and Morgan are the chief corner takers I guess.
