I had the World Cup Willie, thankfully the penicillin cleared it right up.

Mate has just said thinks 96 was probably as we were playing Scotland in the same group so the English flag was used rather than the Union Flag

Never mind a mascot, we need to bring back the Mexico 1970 World Cup Esso coins. That was also when Panini stickers made their debut
Or maybe the Ford Escort Mexico. Not really anything to do with the world cup but the thing I lusted after most (apart from girls) when I was 17.
    Lot 8 - 1973 Ford Escort Mexico

Didn't Jimmy Greaves drive one of those to Mexico in some sort of the World Cup rally?

Almost. He was in a Ford Escort but I believe the Mexico special edition (only just over 10,000 made) didn't come out until November 1970.

And of course there is still the inconsistency that we sing the British anthem before matches. It feels weird that we sing GSTQ and the Scotland fans boo it, when effectively it's their anthem too, as part of the United Kingdom!

I'm trying to remember when Jerusalem started being sung at England cricket matches, was it before 2005?

The St George’s flag was associated with the National Front and for some of us oldies still has that stain. But thankfully 1996 changed that.

Out of interest, similar happened to Italy. It used to be they didn't sing the national anthem due to fascist associations. They do now because they have claimed it back. I am displaying the English flag proudly outside of my house as are many others. It is great we have taken it back. Allowing them to have it was never acceptable. It belongs to us.
