  • Soul out on the Disney app was a good watch. Started a little strange  but it hot into it's stride and was very enjoyable, if a bit of a tear jerking finale. 8.5/10
Palm Springs is in it's way a variation of Gtoundho Day. However  it has it's own story and some funny lines so well worth a watch.
    7.5/10

  • I really liked the jazz style of Soul, and the animation was incredible. I just didn't get into the story the way I usually do with a Pixar movie. I don't know if that was a result of watching it at home with distractions, or if the story didn't engage me, or if maybe I didn't quite 'get' the afterlife thing they designed. One thing I am certain about - I thought it was going to be about acceptance of death. But at the end, that was definitely not the case. And that frustrated me. I get a bit cross with shows and movies not dealing with the finality of it.

I thought that it was gonna be about a bloke that played in a band. Didn’t have a clue it was gonna be about death etc. I thought it was good but nowhere near the levels of Coco, which IMO, is their greatest creation.

I completely agree, I think it was the only Pixar film yet to make me tear up, and I was really looking forward to it. The musical, human sequences were great, it really doesn't go much into his passion, or what it means to him, personally. Like, there weren't really any stakes set up. It was decent, but I was expecting it to really be more up my alley.

  • Watched News of the World with Tom Hanks last weekend and rather enjoyed it, probably a 7.5/10.

First half was really good, but the second half lacked action a bit, felt to me like they'd cut 20 mins out somewhere and most of the action for the second half of the film ended up on the cutting room floor.

Still well worth a watch, I imagine Hanks will get a few nominations for it, although I don't think the story/part is strong enough for him to win anything from it.

Not a bad film, but expected better ... still worth a watch

2021 films (so far) of varying degrees of watchability:

    Outside the Wire
    The Little Things
    Below Zero
    Judas and the Black Messiah
    Palmer
    The Dig
    Fear of Rain
    The White Tiger
    The Marksman
  • Only just watched Joker last week

Whilst I thought his performance was good, the film was absolutely pants in my opinion.
  • I saw Sound of Metal last weekend which I enjoyed. Although I thought the story was sloppy in places Riz Ahmed made up for it.

Think the UK release is in March.

I wasn't expecting anything from it when I watched it, yet ended up thinking it was a brilliant film and window in to the world of mental health and the various triggers that some people have around others' behaviour towards them. Genuinely wasn't expecting it as I hadn't read anything about it beforehand. One of my favourite films of recent times.

You want to see a pants film? Give Robot Riot a whirl  :s  :)

    Fully agree
  • Stan and Ollie is on BBC1 8.25pm tonight.

If you want more musical Riz, Mogul Mowgli is out now and really nice.

Really looking forward to seeing this. Trailer looks superb.

Also waiting to see Frances McDormand‘s latest film Nomadland.

The Sound of Metal has been available to watch for about a year through various movie apps and sites.

Ah, had no idea. Id seen it on Amazon, but only the US site. Will keep a look out for it on other sites then.

    Terrific film

Saw this when first released. Really enjoyed it and thought the acting was first class. However did some research and I don't think it is an accurate portrayal of events. A good "artists impression" but don't accept it as fact

I watched this soon after it came out with no great expectations, and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

Watched it (Mogul Mowgli) last night, really good film. The “songs” (performed really as poetry) are taken from his most recent album the Long Goodbye.
  • On Amazon Prime .. 'I Care a Lot' .. bad girls, soppy judges and corrupt medics and 'care home' owners taking advantage of U S 'guardianship' laws .. sounds boring ? .. it is quite compelling and very worrying (for us older folk)  :/

Couple of recent catches on Netflix I enjoyed - The White Tiger & The Red Sea Diving Resort.

    https://youtu.be/35jJNyFuYKQ

Story about a young man escaping the caste system in modern day India and the appaling injustices still prevalent.

    https://youtu.be/80WflPMzAcw

True(ish)story about Mossad setting up a fake hotel to facilitate the escape of persecuted Jewish tribes in the Sudan. Thought having Chris Evans as the lead was a bit distracting tbh and could have done with being a bit rougher around the edges overall.

First one much better than the second but both killed a couple of hours on a lockdown evening.

  • Capone. What a pile of shit.

I honestly think Tom Hardy was taking the piss.

Ahhh just put that on my list ... will still give it a try but sounds like it may not get finished.
  • Cherry (coming soon to Apple+).

It’s the first post-Avengers movie by the Russo brothers. They’ve adapted a semi-autobiographical novel by a fella who was a bit of a loser, went to Iraq, became a junkie and robbed some banks.

I loved it. I thought Tom Holland was incredible in the lead. The Russos do an impressive job of picking up on fine details and plunging into the characters memories. I got really into it.

Thing is, I gave it a glowing review and, as I usually do, looked at what others were saying after I sent it to the editor. I appear to be alone in thinking it’s amazing! Mostly middling reviews but I’m not sure why. It does precisely what it’s supposed to do. I stand by my reaction - really bloody good film.

Cheers am curious to see this one

Did your editor question you at all after sending in such a glowing review given the others hadnt agreed?

Started watching it tonight, stopped three seconds in to the film as I had already seen enough.
  • Watched The Life of David Gale on prime last night. Thought it was a decent and absorbing film, with a twist upon a twist. Kevin Spacey (yes, all right), but he was good in it
