I enjoyed the show at Chris Beetles' Gallery, especially as there were personal connections: went to school at Dartington Hall (illustrated), and was a neighbour of artist Hans Schwarz in Greenwich. S. R. Badmin's 'Valley' looked superb, and was accompanied by his meticulous preparatory drawing. Was also much impressed by the dozens of football cartoons for the daily and evening papers, mainly 1970s: biting satires, brilliantly drawn. Had a chat with the amiable Chris Beetles (Spurs supporter); about half-a-million was asked for the entire collection, though I don't know if a buyer was found.0

Rams? Would account for the black and white strip.Henry Irving said:Can anyone make out who we are playing? It say Addicks v ????? In the bottom left hand corner1 -
I think that's right. Except that we didn't play Derby at The Valley in the League in 1953. We played them on 20 September 1952 (3-1 win), but they didn't play a League game at The Valley after that until November 1957.EveshamAddick said:

Maybe it's painted from a photo of the 1952 match?0 -
The inscription, bottom left, reads 'Charlton v Arsenal at The Valley'.Chizz said:

Look closely at this painting, 'Automatic Football Game', by Fred Dubery (1926-2011) - Backdrop appears to be the old stand at The Valley, as seen from the east terrace. Dubery was schooled at Whitgift and attended Croydon College of Art.

Seems like another person who is just doing generic art across the Football Leagues yet for anyone interested just came across these.

Can't see any gaps in the crowd. That's a novel idea.
Surely needs to be a note to say that this picture was painted before social distancing measures were introduced
