  • I don't think Peakie's rocket ever made an appearance in a Charlton shirt - it was part of his locker at Leicester but he got a new locker when he moved to Charlton and it went missing..
I dunno ...... I recall him hitting thunderous shots from distance and I'm sure he scored a handful of goals for us.

But at this distance in time, if I'm honest, can't actually picture any one of them in my mind's eye.
Over to the jury, then ....... anyone remember Andy Peake's rocket shots?

    you're probably right...

  • Peakie’s rockets didn’t exist in a Charlton shirt , he was proper charltonised with his duff shooting for us.
I think he may have scored one for us that took a massive deflection against Spurs
his rockets were more a Leicester thing

The 3-3 draw was delayed twice or three times as there were metal detectors outside due to Mrs. Maggie ( I hate football and the working class)Thatcher . There was also a policy of no change given . The price at the Rthur Waite suite of terraces was £3.20. Naturally  everyone had change so everyone  had to take all metal objects off.   It was a disaster.  The crowd outside got restless and started a crushing movement.
There was a Police Inspector in charge.  He was excellent.  He told the ground to delay kick off while he tested the detector.  He was nearly naked before it allowed  him through without a beep.
He tried to reset it and asked for a further delay. Nothing worked. He decided to scrap the detector idea and did random searching to satisfy  his brief. He even got a copper to get a bloke a programme as he forgot to buy one. Superb policing with good humour. We were 30 minutes late with the KO and that meant overtime for police.  He understood responsibility and took decisions. I think the crowd was not separated  well that day but the fans behaved, perhaps because of him. Without  him we could have had no game or got in late.
I don't recall the 3-3 v Millwall at Selhurst being delayed by 30 mins, metal detectors and the like.
Mind you I've got a poor memory. I seem to recall Les Briley scoring from 25/30 yards.

Iirc That miracle goal was when they battered us 0-3 in the top flight , sickening , he works at the new zampa road den and I saw him a few years back and told him he was a jammy Cnut with that lucky strike and he broke my heart scoring it

I was at that game and half wanted to clap that. Our KP was well beaten. Had no chance.

A Peakie rocket appeared in the 4-4 draw at Ipswich. What game that was, 2-0 down could have been 4-0. We clawed it back to 2-2 and within 5 minutes were were 4-2 down.

Then made a comeback to 4-4 and then last minute Minto was sprinting forward to their goal but a last ditch tackle stopped him.

  • Interesting read - thanks for posting. Shame he left Charlton for family reasons, would loved for him to have stayed.

Andy Peake also in that Leicester photo. Despite a couple of hundred appearances for us, I'm not sure that he was ever held in the same affection as others with a similar number of games...not sure why.
Did you ever see Peakie’s rocket?

    Thanks - a decent strike..

Also enjoyed the sole Charlton fan at the front of the Ipswich end going apeshit when the freekick went in.
  • How bad were we?
Worse than v Burton the other night and this was in the top division.

At least Millwall had Cascarino and Sheringham up front....
  • Ooiiiiiiii!!!!!!!

Well off topic now - sort it out
Discussing my old team mate Peakey's one thing, but Millwall forwards - NO!

  • @oohaahmortimer did you have to?

You might enjoy a bit of Addick flavoured masochism but that was just too painful to watch. :anguished:

Here is the video I put on you tube for the 30th Anniversary of the 9 second goal

and here is the thread I started on the 25th Anniversary: https://forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/43924/25-years-ago-today-a-moment-in-cafc-history/p1

It would be nice if people put comments on the youtube video. After all, non Charlton fans will only see those comments, not these on CL. Why not just copy and paste from CL?

Sheffield United 2-5 at home was a shocker.

    why?
  • why?
I think he means the Chris Kamara incident

I'm obviously missing something but I'm not aware of any allegations of racism being the reason that Kamara punched Melrose?

From memory Melrose said something racist about Kamara’s kids - but happy to be corrected if I am wrong - I am certain that a racist comment was made by Melrose, which set Kamara off (albeit he waited until the final whistle to exact his revenge)
  • Unbelievable.

You won't need to be a fly on the wall. It's televised. Or is this fly a mind-reader ?
