I still have in my possession the letter sent to me from then joint manager Steve Gritt, thanking me for recommending two Colchester players I'd spotted on my travels - striker Steve McGavin and young midfielder Mark Kinsella.
These two lads looked like outstanding prospects back then, but, as Gritty wrote, Charlton were "unable to afford these players at that time" due to the financial constraints on the struggling club.
Whether my unpaid scouting services at the time were instrumental in eventually bringing Kins' to the club some 18 months later is open to debate - but, hey, being an Addick to the core, I like to think I played some part, however small!
As for McGavin, he went on to play for Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers, before finishing back at Col U at the end of his professional playing career.
We'll obviously never know now, but I believe that, Charlton's money problems notwithstanding, had he managed to avoid the numerous niggling injuries his career was blighted with, he could have made almost as great an impact on recent Addicks' history as the tenacious Irishman eventually did.....

lot of time out with annoying injuries. Probably would have been a good addition at the time.
Send it to Kins ...... he'll know what to look for ....(!)
;o)
I thought I knew this club *very puzzled*

Welcome to CL anyhow.
Curb_It drooling at the prospect of meeting a man with a woman's username ......?

I'd lend you the films but they are on 16m
Cardigan porn?
I know this because I know the guy who did his knee scan when he crocked it a few years back and he asked Kins to take off his clothes to change into a hospital gown and Kins said he was already naked as he had a rare genetic condition which meant he grew football training wear instead of skin. He apparently took medication to control the colour of the kit to avoid emabarresment when playing for other clubs, but he disclosed that he'd been born to play for Charlton as if he stopped taking medication the kit reverted to a mid nineties style Addicks kit. I believe Keith Peacock suffers from something similar which is why he was wearing Charlton shorts when DA9 met him despite him working for West Ham at the time.
It is a mutation of the same genetic condition which causes Steve Brown to be full of red, white and Charlton as well.
I didn't like to mention it at the time, but I think this may be the big secret we're not allowed to hear that was disclosed at the recent Bromley Supporters Club meeting.
I heard it wasn't just the films that were 16m...
I wish he'd wear some trousers, it made me feel colder just looking at him at Barnsley.
LOL - walked into that one.
Has no one every told you size doesn't matter.
I nearly choked on my coffee when I opened up this thread and saw your pic, Dan.
Absolute quality.
So this is what Henry is secretly all about ....?
No wonder he gets touchy about cardigans!
