I can't think why this song has come into my head today.

The Toots and the Maytals classic soulful ska original from 1969 v the punky reggae party cover from 1980.

Listen to both without prejudice and say which you prefer.

And yes Robert Palmer and The Specials did good covers too.

    It's a great song, though I can't see Toots picking up the Nobel Prize for Literature with those lyrics. The Clash have a better intro and far better production, but they had at least a 12 year advantage on recording technology and a shed load more money at their disposal. It's not The Clash's best though and is let down by the backing vocals. Although sounding muffled (like every Toots song I've heard) the original had a rhythm and a feel that that the cover couldn't match. Toots for me.

    Of these two Toots by a country mile not even a contest 
    The ultimate version of this however is by Guns n Roses alumnus and creative powerhouse Izzy Stradlin and his JuJu Hounds from his first post GnR album. Can’t add a link on this phone but do y’selves a favour and look him up

    Prefer the Toots version.  They also recorded a Ska version at a higher tempo which I think is better than the original.

    Toots for me. I like the Clash version but cant help thinking the production sounds like, but isn't quite as good as one of the Two-Tone bands. The Specials or Bad Manners come to mind.

    The Toots version is great.

    The Clash version is greaterer.

    It's one of the songs that you'd have to try really hard to make bad.  Even a group like Boyzone or Little Mix could probably do it well.

    Not much wrong with the Clash version, but it Toots for me

    Clash are one of the few white bands who can sing reggae songs and emerge with credit
