Sam Curran is currently the golden child and probably next name on the teamsheet after the captain and Stokes. For my money unless the ball’s hooping round corners he’s regulation county trundler with a guaranteed buffet ball every over. The obvious replacement for JA is Ollie Robinson but status is everything in the England setup
Pope batting after Stokes is another classic example of this wrong headed nonsense. OP is only in for his batting he’s the specialist so should be in before the allrounder. Stokes has talent to spare and has developed remarkable powers of concentration but batting him at 5 is all about the hierarchy and nothing about winning test matches.

Watching all the videos of the world cup final and it's like why didnt Stokes just smash that last ball out the ground. Waist high full toss. Just smack it.

    Like I know the logic.

    But WHYYYYY?!?!??!
He said it was because he felt that if it was airborne there was a chance of getting out. He new if he played it safe, along the floor, then he knew that they would get one & tie the match.....maybe get 2 and win, but definitely backed them to at least take it to a super over.
Thats the logic and I get it. But still - WHYYYYYYY?!?!
My view on this is he knew the fielder was quite a bit further back then when he received the ball , obviously Coming in quick depending on Stokes shot , Stokes thought he could soft hand it in that direction with that shot and 100% risk free get the super over and then give themselves a good chance of getting a second , fumble , ball gets there slowly enough for the 2nd run to be made .
its a numbers game and he was working on percentages

edit: I only just read the rest of posts , yep Golfie explains what stokes thought , similar to what I thought but without the in-depth analysis I provided

I did see a clip on his insta story a couple of days ago of Jof and some mates singing happy birthday and giving someone a cake in a very nice house. I did think 'wait what I didnt think they were allowed to even see family between tests?' But had assumed it was an old video. Maybe it was.

Probably him getting his end away!

You do realise that we won 😂
So much stress though. obviously its amazing we won and the way we did it. But rewatching it brought back all the feelings and I couldn't help but be annoyed at that!

I failed to add , that’s how I felt at the time, why didn’t he just put it out the ground and save us the extra agony.....

BBC says he went back to his house in Brighton.

He didn't just nip out for 5 minutes which isn't even allowed which falls into line with the fact that England only found out last night. Perhaps he was homesick.

Stokes is our best and most consistent batsman and has been for some time.

Perhaps he’s just hopelessly stupid with an extra seasoning of arrogance
He’s lucky they don’t sack him off completely

And Stokes is technically one of our best. Jacques Kallis was possibly the best all rounder of all time and he certainly didn't bat at 6!

Is Wood so fragile that he can't play consecutive Tests?

It's not as if he bowled massive numbers of overs in the 1st Test, 22 in the 1st innings, and just 12 in the second

I feel 'possibly the second-best all-rounder after Sobers' would be a more fitting accolade tbh, but that's another argument...

He’s like Simon Jones, short run up, explosive pace and definitely has an X factor... just never fit. Jones also liked to give his bat a good swing just like wood does.

From one extreme to the other. 2 fast bowlers and a long tail, to a team of "English" bowlers, but one which bats down to Number 10!

    Curran 8, Woakes 9, Bess 10?

    And a number 11 with a Test-best score of 169.

Wel gor blimey, who'd a thunk it?
A captain with some decent bowlers under cloudy skies, with, crucially some actual brain power, wins the toss and inserts the opposition to use the prevailing conditions to best advantage.
    It'll never catch on...

Archer is a bloody disgrace going home & how on earth did he manage it undetected?

WI bowling all over the shop.
    Eng 16-0  9.4 overs.

And Burns plays all around a straight friendly ball from (non)spinner Chase
And in the approved manner of this team burns a review in the desperate egomania that "He can't get me out"
Damn right - he shouldna got you out but you missed a gentle straight one, take it like a grown up and get off
Bang on the stroke of lunch as well, berk

After the seamers bowl rubbish, Chase gets the breakthrough. Rory Burns a review too when it was plumb

WI seamers were pretty atrocious though. Wonder if lunch will see them smarten up their act or if Chase is going to get another 8-for

I should imagine they desperately needed lunch after a whole hours play.

So would you if you were in their side and knew that a certain 12th man might be getting into lunch before you!

WI will be rather ruing not having Big Rahkeem tearing in at the other end now
