Danny Drinkwater charged with drink-driving after crash

Obviously drink driving is scummy, but seeing as no other car was involved the main thing I take from that report is that he cost Chelsea £35m yet hardly plays. Football gone mad.

Danny Drinkwater went from a Premier League winning side where he played every week at Leicester to not getting in the 18 man squad at Chelsea.
He was never going to make it at Chelsea, as his success was based on his telepathic understanding of Vardy's runs where he was redundant at Chelsea when on the few occasions he played at Chelsea he was a shadow of the player at the foxes.

Money talks and it's so disengenuos when some players make out its all about playing.

To be fair, until this incident I would have said Danny Drinkwater had nailed it. Was a hopeful member of the Utd academy who never made it close to being part of the Premier League plans. Went on a few nothing loans and then signed for Leicester down a division. Normally as a Utd academy player you could expect to get an offer from a Sunderland or an Everton based on your background, but he dropped further down. He did well in the Championship and then established himself as a useful Premier League player. Leicester then was about his level. Except he had an exceptional season along with all the players around him and somehow did the impossible and won the league. He stayed another year, played in the Champions League with Leicester but had a pretty average season and Leicester finished 12th after that, having lost their most influential player who brought out the best in Drinkwater by covering up his limitations (lack of pace and mobility) and allowed him to showcase his strengths (passing range and speed of thought on the ball).

Where do you go from there? He was having injury issues, he was at the peak of his career earnings-wise, probably having one bumper contract left in him (he'll be 32 when his Chelsea contract expires). He might have got another contract if he could maintain his form for 5 years. Which he couldn't, the previous season had shown that. In come Chelsea who are desperate for a midfielder as well as an English player to help meet their registration requirements. They are offering far more money than he would get at Leicester and the potential to play Champions League football and be part of a Premier League winning team again. His mate Kante who he works brilliantly with is already there, and already has a Premier League title to his name at Chelsea. I agree, he was never going to make it. I have no doubt that he thought that too, but given that he also would have been aware that there was never going to be another season like that at Leicester, and that they had missed their chance to cement themselves as a top four team in the season after winning the league, why would he turn it down? More money, the chance to be part of a winning squad again, knowing full well that your season is going to be limited by injury anyway, and the slight chance that you could establish yourself - go back a five years and ask yourself if Danny Drinkwater would ever be a key part of a Premier League winning Leicester team in 2015/16. You would rightly say it's impossible, but then he's evidence that weird things can happen in football. And if it doesn't work out? £100,000 a week to try. I think he's one of those rare occasions where the move made sense from all angles.
