Sounds like the kind of place Neddy Seagoon would go to on holiday...

  • Florida, October, fish costa fortune
  • Back to Kalamaki for me for a week in June but this time only with my daughter before she heads off to Uni (hopefully) later this year. Saving a fortune as it's outside of the school holidays for the first time in years. Then a week in Wales during the summer hols.
  • That’s very kind of you Robbo, I don’t mean to come across like that as I’m very lucky, just amazed some times at what some people with kids still manage to do. Good luck to them.

Completely agree - we're not on the breadline, own the house etc etc, but now the kids are at school I can't understand how so many people seem to afford/justify a few grand for a week away?

Using Swisdom's Mexico trip above as an example, it sounds amazing, worth the money etc, but I'd imagine if costs the same out of the school holidays as it would cost a parent to take kids to an average package deal in Spain etc.

I get it's supply and demand, but like you AFKA I'm just surprised so many parents manage it, especially with young kids.
I know where you are coming from, we aren't on the breadline, own house / 2 cars etc....but with 4 kids, holidays (even a cheapy 10 days in Spain all inc in the summer holidays is c4k). Hence we bought a touring caravan, 2nd hand, got a cracking 6 berth for £11k and invested in all the gear with it, now we love it and more importantly the kids absolutely love it and some of the sites we've stayed at have been amazing in the southern half of the UK. manage to get away about 4 times a year in it, a few long weekends and then about 10 days in the summer.

Did south of france last year and was amazing, staying in this country this year but then planning ferry to northern spain and somewhere within a 2 hour drive next summer.

Great investment for us, and we'll get a good 8-10 years out of it.
You will love driving in Spain....ferry from Portsmouth to Santander/Bilbao aint cheap though.

If it’s anything like your tipping, I should be packing thermals and a ski hat now :-)

Me AFKA I took my 2 away nearly every year whether I could afford it or not mostly not.
Either a loan or credit card paid for the holiday.
Was lucky enough my parents had a place near villamartin still over £2000 flights and spending money.
Spoke to a mate before Christmas, his going Mexico with 3 kids later on in the year.
While going on this holiday he told me he has £10000 on a credit card not on 0% interest.
He pays £300 a month off , interest must be £150 A month so God knows when the card gets paid off.
I take my hat off to those who live within thier means.

My wife and I are there in June too. We stay at Denny's Inn. What's your hotel of choice?

how old is your son ?
  • Deferred Iran and heading to Israel in November.
  • Barcelona in July for Off Sonar and then want to get over to Istanbul for a few days in September before an internal flight to a beach resort on the Turkish coast.

Does anyone have any tips for places to stay in Istanbul, must see things etc?
  • Narrowed it down to Portugal or Greece want go 1st week of sept any advice on either? Have looked up villamoura the Tivoli marina is just shy of 1500 pp with flights!!

Loved Villamoura. Great selection of bars and restaurants on the waterfront
But not much else, PF. Worth a day out, but I wouldn't want to be there a week (unless you are a golfer or want to waste your cash in the Casino) - expensive compared with most other places too.
It was alright for us for a week; a bit of walking but we didn't get round to some cycling. We wanted a lazy week after a bit f a hectic time so had lazy days round the pool or on the beach. And the hotel was a short walk from the marina with a great choice of restaurants and bars etc.

Its a bit different for us this year.

Wife is now 21 weeks pregnant so that ruled out long haul/anything longer than 8hrs/anywhere with the Zika virus so opted for 10 days in Dubai in a few days. Looking forward to some warm sunshine.

Away for a weekend in Wales end of March to go to Zip World with a detour to Liverpool for the Spurs game tagged on the end.

Baby due in mid-May, so any other plans will wait until after the baby is settled in, although funds are already put aside for potential FA Cup/CL Final (in Madrid) should miracles exist...and baby has safely arrived...and absence is permitted. There's more chance of Spurs winning the league than all 3 alligning.

Wife is already looking into doing a 6-8wk trip before her maternity leave ends, so we do Japan, Australia and NZ or something like that next Spring as who knows when we'll next get an opportunity like that again.

Many congratulations to you both and hope all goes well with the birth.

I do trust, as is tradition on this board, that we will see your new edition, within days of his or her arrival, in a Charlton baby grow!

We stay at the Rainbow. Its basic but the hospitality is fab. Have been going for years.

I agree butlins or Centre Parcs, Butlins Bognor only has 1 (possibly 2 tables of snooker). Obviously the latter is a bit cheaper but i prefer personally, although i go on adult weekends so slightly different.

Likewise with Denny's Inn. Great location for both beach and main strip, excellent hospitality and fab food.

Oistins fish market, but don't go one one of the organised trips it's better to just turn up and grab a few snacky bits and enjoy the music in the varoius bars that are there.
  • Thinking of going to Santorini in June. Heard mixed reports so if anyone on here has any tips/recommendations they would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've visited Santorini a few times and got married there in 2015.  Stunning place.  Our preferred location was Firostefani.  A nice little hotel (without Caldera view) was Reverie, family run/owned.  We stayed in a suite, probably (£150 a night).  On our wedding night/night after we stayed at Dana Villas, in the Infinity Suite. Absolutely ridiculous room.  A cave pool inside.  Swim out onto the balcony.  Amazing place.  Hiring a quad bike and visiting different beaches was great fun.  The public bus was a bit of a shambles though and was very much a free for all.  The walk from Fira/Firostefani to Oia is quite amazing.
