  • In face value , a 2 year contract for a 33 year old midfielder could be considered a stop gap, and high risk, ie a player on the way down wanting a final pay.

However we don’t know his personality, whether he inspires others and is a positive influence on the team a la Andy Hughes.
Just hope his legs haven’t gone!

If a player these days keeps themselves in really good condition and I suppose has been lucky with injuries then 33 is no problem at all. Arguably the worlds best player in Ronaldo is 33.

He played more than 30 games in the Championship last season. Has been team captain and is noted for his drive. I think he’ll be ok.

  • I'm sure he can do a job.
  • All of your fears should be allayed because he scored against us 4 years ago

He was largely anonymous in the draw at our place early last season and didn't feature in our win at the Macron in April (not sure of the reason why).

Could turn out to be a good signing, IF he can stay injury free,

He's a journeyman which is the best we can expect in L1 esp given our budget. Modric wasn't interested...

Yeah and I think that, realistically, to get someone like him you're going to need to offer him more than a one-year deal (or pay a tremendous amount over that year).

I just think he would make for a great augmentation to last year's squad, rather than one of the marquee signings of this summer. That being said, I'm looking forward to see Dijksteel play in midfield one day. I genuinely don't think he has since pre-season last year, where he looked a little ropey at times but also very dominant at others, and he is a year more experienced now.

Modric has always been a bit mardy.

Hardly a journeyman! was at Bolton for 7 years and Swansea for 5 years.
Not a journeyman but loves living in shitholes.

'Journeyman' doesn't mean having played for many clubs.

... that is almost the exact definition...
  • Journeyman means reliable but not outstanding - fair enough description?

It's actually nowhere near the exact definition.

    See the hoofmeister's reply above.

I stand corrected. Amazing how you can follow football for so long and completly misunderstand something like this the whole time!

turns out everyday is a school day!
  • In British English, a journeyman is a player who has represented many different clubs over his career.

Now this is a journeyman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Louis

I think most dictionaries would give the competent but not inspired definition for sportsmen. Only seems to be in football where journeyman is also used as well travelled.
  • So as we're on a football forum we should use the football definition

It seems both are used for football from what I can see.....

  • When I was an apprentice back in the 60's, qualified men were referred to as Journeymen, just saying

Too late. He's already been in prison.

So only one player is fitter than a player with no pre season whatsoever

Should have the nonstop energy we've been missing in the middle of the park then
  • Behind Foley or Crofts?
  • I wonder who the winner was ?
