    Scheduling is a bit strange.

    Our quarter final is saturday BEFORE Russia v Croatia even though both of them played their second round games 2 days before us.

    As an aside, I was impressed with Ashley Young when things got tetchy and nasty during the game, you could see him calming England players down and moving them away from confrontations

    I assume it's to do with the half of the draw we are both in - obviously the winners of our game play the winners of theirs so both winners will get the same prep time for the semi

    Apart from being a bit late on subs when we're clearly tired, I've been surprised and very impressed with Southgate - it's clear a lot of thought and effort is being put into the coaching and that he's getting a young team to take it all on board.

    There are better teams in the competition and no idea how far we'll go but it's good to see him really trying to maximise our chances.

    Reminds me of England winning the cricket at edgbaston in 05. Should’ve wrapped it up a lot earlier and right to the wire but it’s a big monkey off our backs getting through on pens and think it will give the team a massive confidence boost.

    Watching it on a Foxtel Plus record in Australia, we were an hour behind the real game and the bloody recording ended just as it went for penalties - had forgotten to record the programme after, so spent the next five minutes despreately trying to find the game online, before giving up and making the wife find out the result on her phone!! Most tense I have been since Wembley 98 and the PO Final!!

    I'm wired, I've had a dog of a day with work really wore me out. I was so tense and clenched up throughout I've managed to dislodge a filling from gritting my teeth, lost my voice. I'm so proud of that team and the coaching staff, the guts shown and for most of the game the ball useage and retention was what I've wanted an England side to do for years. The professionalism shown by the players was remarkable, Tunisia, Panama and Colombia have all been utter shithouses to play against and for a time the referee could have totally lost control. I'm glad we won else I'd have sounded bitter complaining about the gamesmanship and what should have been a red card in the first half although Henderson embarrassed himself in my eyes. Either way why the video replay wasn't used I don't know.

    I'm wired now, so happy for this group of players and for us all. We've been due a bit of luck. Just can't believe we've got through a penalty shoot out. Lots of ghosts banished tonight
