Matchday Traffic

edited February 2019 in Match Day Travel
The ferry's not working at the moment.
Gas works at the bottom of Francis st.
Gas works in Charlton church lane.
The new shops will be heaving.
Lots of Pompey fans.

Give yourself a bit of extra time to get there.

I’m at Wimbledon station at the moment. The town Christmas street fair has closed the high street and the trains are rail-replacement going south except, thankfully, for the ones going to Norbiton - had this been the Valley they’d probably have closed charlton station if it was a match day
  • Ferry is now back up and running.

And a Merry Christmas to you too!!

but its sunday today, not Saturday 9th.............
  • To cap it all no bridge at the level crossing.

“The footbridge at Charlton Lane has been taken away for major refurbishment and re-painting. We aim to get it back in position before Spring 2018 and in the meantime if people could use the level crossing we would appreciate their patience and understanding.”
  • People on foot couldn't even use the level crossing after the Peterborough game as the gates had failed.
  • People travelling from North Greenwich tube station allow more time on Saturday as the IKEA store is now open.
About 1,500 people queued up this morning for the opening of east Greenwich’s controversial Ikea store.
Traffic coped well in the initial minutes, but shortly after the doors opened the bus lane past the store began to be congested with drivers who had ignored the one-way system put in place to alleviate fears of gridlock. There was no sign of any enforcement of the bus lane, with the two police officers on duty watching the queue rather than the traffic. Within half an hour, traffic had begun to queue around the Woolwich Road flyover, although queuing for the Blackwall Tunnel was also causing problems in the area.
The store’s real test will come on Saturday, when its first weekend will coincide with Charlton Athletic’s home match against Southend United.

If we start slipping down the table there will be more people going to IKEA than The Valley!

    Urrrrgh !

    TMI !
  • Should be gridlock on a constant basis around IKEA every weekend - ridiculous that they allowed this to be built.

  • Mods:  Please edit the thread title.  Next Saturday is every Saturday forever!  Hang on though, maybe just leave it...

Wonder what the impact on trading would be if thousands of charlton fans start to make the IKEA restaurant and takeaway section their pre-match lunch places.
  • I take it IKEA has a car park. Would any in store purchase entitle a charlton fan to free match day parking ?

  • I've just taken a positive out of Roland's tenure. He has made a huge contribution to reducing traffic at home games. Well done, Roland, old chap.

The car park will be packed at the weekend - I'm assuming people will park in the bus lane at the weekend outside the store.

Traffic is pretty terrible locally at weekends so this just adds to the fun. Combination of the Blackwall Tunnel, the 02, Charlton,IKEA, Woolwich Ferry - what could go wrong?

At least RD has kept our crowds low.

  • Walked to Ikea after the game. Amazed how busy it still was after 5pm
