  • Perhaps Napier (3-9 so far) will change his mind about retiring.

    Leading wicket-taker in the country!

He has a cushy school job tbf, go out on a high seems right. Amazing how he never played limited-overs for England
  • Meanwhile Lancs are doing their level best to stop Yorkshire from securing the Division 1 Championship with Middlesex currently 132-1. Yorks are 101-7 against Somerset!

that damn Porter kid who'll definitely be replaced by new signings in Div 1, despite the fact he's 23 and the rest of the Essex bowling attack, Bopara aside, is 36 or older :P

And the keeper will be 37 before next season starts too.
They have signed Wheater back from Hants to eventually replace Foster.

Yes saw that but really not sure how he should be allowed to play for Hants as recently as two weeks ago and can now turn out for Essex. On that basis, any player could move just for crucial final games of the season. There should be a transfer deadline.

Foster is still a good keeper though. Just resigned Adam Wheater (26) from Hants on a 2 year contract.
Think we will cut it in Division One next season.

Why were only 82 overs bowled at Chelmsford today?

Play at Chelmsford began 90 minutes late as heavy traffic on the nearby A12 left Glamorgan's players stranded at the ground without any kit and, with the visitors in dire trouble midway through the morning session, wrapping up the title appeared to be a formality for Essex.

But Carlson - who had scored only 11 runs in his previous four first-class innings with a highest score of 10 - was backed up well by his lower-order colleagues before bad light ended play with a total of 14 overs lost.

Just noticed Wheater is playing as a batsman in this game - Foster behind the sticks.

Which is what he has been doing for Hants this season and why I said he shouldn't be allowed to switch at this late stage - just four weeks ago he scored a ton for them and yet is now allowed to drop a division and play for a team that is in the race for promotion.
  • Seb has come home from school with some exciting news. Well it's exciting for me even if it isn't for him!

One of my boyhood heroes is coming to the school tomorrow to present the awards at Prize giving. Before that, however, he is going to be doing a two hour session (not sure how much "doing" he will actually be undertaking given his age) with a few of the cricketers including, among others, Seb and current Kent scholar, Oli Robinson.

Parents are permitted to meet the gentleman at the end of the session and I intend to ask him to sign my Print of the scorecard of the Kent v Lancashire 1974 Gillette Cup Final. Well we did win it didn't we!

I just hope Clive Hubert Lloyd won't be offended by the request!
  • I've also just told Seb that he and Bumble used to play together at Lancashire and showed him their names on that scorecard.

Unfortunately it seems that Seb needs a bit of educating before tomorrow as he swallowed my assertion, without question, that they are, in fact, brothers!

Somerset have signed Steven Davies from Surrey, who left because he wants to keep wicket again

Bad news for Ryan Davies, though it seemed strange signing an 18/19 year old to be your first choice keeper, especially when his batting is nothing special

I haven't heard anything to this effect but I wouldn't be surprised if Davies doesn't come back to us in the next season or so - especially if Billings does leave.

In addition to Napier, David Masters has now announced his retirement.

No play today due to wet outfield! Expect tomorrow to be OK. Think I will make a visit. Don't expect a big crowd but could turn out to be a decent game. Be a few players on both sides with a bit to prove.

    78-2

    Dickson out for 16
    Denley 11*
    Northeast 16*
  • 159-3 Northeast out for 56. Denly 48*.

We won't get a better chance to beat Essex with RTD, Napier, Foster and Porter all missing.

Yorks 53-4. Lyth plays on to Finn for 43.

    Edit - wrong thread. Oops!!!
  • 207-4 Billings out for 16. Denly 56*
  • 233-6 Denly out for 74 and Gidman has a rare failure but, if you are going to have one, you might as well make it a "golden".
  • 389-7 at close. Stevens in what might be his last innings for us is 107*. Coles is 24* and Tredwell made 39.
  • Great knock by Stevo, it'll be a shame if he leaves, though it does tend to happen in cricket after a benefit year

I heard today that Kent will only offer him a one year contract whereas Sussex will offer him a 2 year deal.
Sounds like he is going for security

    His legs have gone.
