I wanted to publicly thank all of our supporters who gave me such an emotional send off yesterday. This has been a disappointing season but you all put that to one side and the team responded to your passion for the club with a spirited performance. If there could have been a script written for my last day it would certainly have involved Chris Powell, one of my all time favourite Charlton players, scoring the winner but what happened was even better than that. The fact Chris made a point of finding me afterwards and what he said to me will be a lasting memory of the day for me from not only a Charlton legend but one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Add to that the speech made on the pitch by Richard Murray with whom I have had such a close working relationship over the past 11 years and then my name being sung by the north stand choir and you will understand perhaps why I am a happy man today and proud as ever to be a supporter of Charlton Athletic.Thank you all very much.

    No, thank you Peter.

It was a privilege to know and work just a little with you.

Why am I not surprised that a CEO of the club comes on a fans site to thank them. Because this is Charlton that's why.

No thank you Peter, not just for everything you have done over the last x years, but for taking the time to post that message. I do hope you saw the earlier tribute thread:

When all the muck was flying post Dowie / Reed saga, i made the point of emailing you to say don't let the moaning minnies get you down, that there were many of us that appreciated the fine work you had done for the club, and not to feel that episode should taint it.

I'm glad on leaving you have received the respect from the brethren that you deserved.

Look forward to seeing you in the North Upper !

Peter, it should be us thanking you for getting the club in a position that we can stand (sit) in the north upper and cheer peoples names.

"There's only one Peter Varney!" Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication over the years. If you're confident in Mr. Waggott's ability to take the club forward, then so am I.

What a throughly decent and nice bloke - Charlton through and trough.

All the best with whatever you decide to do in the future Reg.

Peter, there could surely have been no more fitting conclusion (other than promotion!) to your present involvement with CAFC - that entertaining (and winning!) blend of youth and age, topped by Sir Chris's magical finale!

    Au Revoir =)

Coming on this board to post a thank you mesage - thank you, Peter, that was a wonderful gesture and appreciated so much!

It reminds us all what a wonderful club we have here. It makes me proud to be part of the Charlton Athletic community.

    Good luck, Peter!

Peter - you thanking us is one of the biggest ironies of all time. It's us who should be thanking you - for everything you've done for the club over the years. Truly sad to see you go. Yesterday was a fitting end - you and Chris Powell epitomise everything that's good about this club. Best of luck in the future - I'm sure you'll still be at the Valley every week anyway!

  • Like everybody else, I just want to say: Thank You Peter. Your hard work & dedication over the last 11 years has helped turn Charlton into a model club. A model that so many other clubs now look to aspire to. You are a true Charlton hero mate; enjoy whatever the rest of your life brings

Thank you very much Peter - 11 years of dedication, achievement and loyalty to the supporters demonstrated in just one act that others in your position would never even contemplate - posting on a fans' site.

All the best for the future. You'll always be Charlton.

Peter, it is us who should be thanking you.

I had cause to contact you once on a particular matter and you replied personally and rectified it.

Nobody can ask more than that.

The two tiered Covered End stands as a tangible legacy to your efforts on our behalves over the years.

    Thank you.

Bartram, Hewie, Brown, Wright, Hales, Peacock, Colin Powell, Kinsella, Mendonca, Chris Powell are rightly legends on the sacred Valley turf, But along with Alwyn and Murray you have taken your place as legend in the boardroom, I thank you for your efforts and if I ever meet you in The Covered End, I`ll buy you a pint then you might appreciate the rubbish we`ve been drinking up there for years ; ) best wishes in your new career.
  • So pleased you got the send off you deserved Peter. Your hard work and dedication has made us into a club that we can all be proud of and is now known throughout the world. I even had a good chat with a Singapore taxi driver last week who knew all about us, and ZZ of course.
That wouldn't have happened back in the dark days before your arrival.
Cheers mate and enjoy your break.

Peter, we will never forget the incredible part you played in re-building the club we all love. Thank you again.

Mr Waggott has got an almost impossible task to follow you. If at the end of his tenure he achieves half of what you achieved he will have done extremely well.

That's two Charlton legends gone on the same day.

Thanks Pete as all the others say it is US who should be thanking YOU.

All the best in the future

    Wow!

Just confirms what I already thought about you Mr Varney, you really do care about us & that can't be said for many other CEO's.

But as most have already said, it is us who should be thanking you.

Have a wonderful break with your family and don't be a stranger.

    C'mon you Reds!!!!
