Whoever signs these players needs sacking. Whatever happened to that bloke Powell who built a title winning side when trusted to sign his own players?11
-
This is the crux of the problem.
- Investing in the academy is a good idea
- Investing in the stadium is a good idea
- Investing in the training ground is a good idea
- Signing young players with potential (often disaffected where they are) is a good idea
- Signing too players that are not good enough makes everything else look like failure.
I know we complain that our squad is not big enough, and that is probably correct, but if all the players we have on our books were good enough we would probably have a big enough squad.
I'm not in Rd's (or KM's) camp but they do seem to be going in the right direction. A good experienced Championship manager with a set up (and the autonomy) to recruit the players that are, actually, good enough and suddenly it would all look very different.
I also don't have a problem with the 'speculate and see what happens' approach on occasion, but the success rate of player recruitment is so bad, and the sales of players that are good enough (Ignoring Gomez for obvious reasons) including Kermortgant, Stephens, Wiggins and Morrison, to just name four, is so bad that every time we change the playing staff the squad becomes weaker.6 -

No chief scout, no director of football, an interim coaching team. Farcical decisions since January 2014.5

Reminded me of when I first saw Izale McLeod for us. Just got that impression early on that he lacked the awareness to play in the Championship.2

1. With games in hand while selling off half his squad and being forced out
2. Did you forget the season inbetween when we finished 3 points off the playoffs you troll.31 -
Not forgetting 3 points away from a Championship Play-Off Semi Final, let me know when a RD laptop scouted team gets us anywhere even close to that.colin1961 said:

We only had a good last quarter of that season was because he was told to play 442 and play Obika by Slater and TJ because they knew they could not sell the club if we went down .....3 -

Back on topic, the question I would have asked if I was at THAT meeting is
why we have Caledonian Ale, er
Who is responsible for our signings? You can see this elsewhere, where clubs have some faceless team who are responsible for signings, and take no responsibility if they are rubbish.
You can keep changing the head coach, but if the players he is given are unsuitable for English football then he will struggle.0 -
KM handles all negotiations so will be dealing with purchase price and wages. I'm not saying she lack experience in these negotiations and will overpay or anything but she will.killerandflash said:Back on topic, the question I would have asked if I was at THAT meeting is

Who finds these gems is another story.

Sell promising youngster who goes on to be successful, then waste the money on 4 crap players who we offload as quickly as possible - repeat5
-
Finest player in a Charlton shirt, he didn't know if he was a left back or left winger

Although that Johnny Robinson would have been out the door pretty quickly. Sweaty would have been gone after 2 own goals in his first 3 games, Luke Young didn't have the best of starts, and as for Carl Leaburn...ForeverAddickted said:One thing I like about these owners...

No feel for the game, this lot.
That's not to say that I think Bergdich is the future - I don't think he should have been signed in the first place.2 -
2 years on five managers/coaches later, were are we now? have a couple of wins in the cup we will have games in hand sitting at the bottom of the league.colin1961 said:

Anyway lets get back to the subject og the thread.

Well this is a classic. So presumably they'd have been delighted to be relegated if only they were keeping the club?colin1961 said:

Still, Powell's 9th place pales into insignificance when compared to the achievements of Bob "Fourth best Charlton manager ever" Peeters, eh Colin...0 -
And Roland has taken us to 3rd bottom of the championship heading fast to div one ... Not much different is it?colin1961 said:

Let's not forget that under Powell we still had our highest league position finish in many years (9th in the Championship). It's also worth remembering that Powell was successful until he had the rug pulled from under him finance wise.
I know you live in cloud cuckoo land colin, but you must look at yourself in the mornings some days and think "who the fook am I fooling?".11 -

I find this whole thing a bit confusing. Bergdich obviously is a decent enough footballer. Real Valladolid and full International.
I'm guessing that he just hasn't settled for some reason.
It does highlight the problem with our recruitment policy though. Far too many chances taken on foreign players that aren't good enough, just either don't or won't settle or adapt to our game. Unless we get some of these misfits very very cheap then it's such a false economy. Duchatelet is supposed to require that we run a tight ship. Fair enough. I applaud that but just how much has been wasted on players that squander our meagre resources.
I'm hearing money will be available in January. I just hope that whatever is spent on either loans or permanent deals is spent wisely and not on another succession of overseas punts.
We need battle hardened performers.5 -

I'm not totally against trying to sell/move Bergdich on but....
Depends on how long players are allowed to settle doesn't it? Reza was deemed by many to be "not Championship standard" and lots of people were happy to see him loaned out. But he now appears to the first choice for many to start and you can see why he was signed in the first place.
Bergdich could be a good player if he was played in his best position (which is probably left-back) but he isn't going to get the chance. Given what has happened to the likes of Simon Francis, would it really surprise anyone if he went on to have a decent career somewhere else?
He looked a good signing at the time. An international with a fair degree of experience at a higher level than The Championship. Signing players isn't an exact science and this is a case where it just hasn't worked out.6 -
Bergdich today .....Ba to join him tomorrow?.
Expect Bergdich will be loaned out and we will pick up a sizeable portion of his wages.
I despair at the buffoons running our club.6 -
Yep, take Polish Pete - realised after a mere 4 minutes of first team football that he was shite and not worth a hundredth of the £700,000 we splashed on him and ruthlessly sent him out on loan all of last season and all of this season, presumably only having to pay part of his wages until his contract runs whilst his value dwindles further. Business genius.ForeverAddickted said:One thing I like about these owners...

The money this board has spent on woeful players is absolutely scandalous, particularly when Katrien then starts harping on about balancing the books and how they've spent £9 million on players. Why not sign some better players for less money - I'd take Lawrie Wilson (£400k) over Naby Sarr (rumoured £2.5m) anyday of the week.26 -
You make an interesting point about needing battle hardened players and I tend to agree but for every Alan Kernaghan there's been a Graham Murty. For every Chris Whyte there's been a Nigel Gray (I'm being a bit flippant there....I never actually saw him play for Charlton but I'm told he wasn't very good!)ShootersHillGuru said:

I agree that a battle hardened player does sound like an attractive option but does battle-hardened sometimes mean you get a player who is so unfortunate/bad that they've regularly been involved in relegation scraps?
I think you are saying that a player is more likely to do us a solid job if he's been through the mill a bit. Again, you're probably right but one of the best players (in my time) brought in to rescue a desperate situation was an 18 year old centre-back that had never played a first team game...Alan McDonald. You just can't tell sometimes.

Meanwhile Morro and Kermy have proved great value for their new clubs.9
