T20 Franchise Cricket

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32745399

Talk today of moving along with the times (eventually !), and adopting Franchise Cricket a la IPL and Big Bash.
I think it would be brilliant to have city based teams , with the rights hopefully sold to Terrestrial TV
I foresee 12 teams in 2 leagues with top 2 from each league battling it out in a T20 day in the format we currently have.
Teams could be..
1) London North (Lords)
2) London South (Oval)
3) Southampton
4) Bristol
5) Cardiff
6) London East (play at Olympic Stadium?)
1) Manchester
2) Leeds
3) Nottingham
4) Birmingham
5) Dublin
6) Newcastle

All played in a 4-6 week period from Thursday to Monday which would allow for the overseas 20/20 specialists to play with finals day being played at Olympic Stadium (West Ham permitting ?).

  • Will renaming counties as cities make the game better? Apart from relocating Essex and Durham, and creating a Dublin team, not a great deal changes and you lose support in certain areas.

If played during the kids school holidays would provide best weather and best pitches, and would provide a magnificent crescendo to the season
  • Who would kent and sussex come under ??
  • As that BBC article says, what about the likes of Essex and Somerset who sell out T20 games.

They are not going to vote to give that up
  • Who would kent and sussex come under ??

Well, if, for example there WASNT an East London Team, then I would expect North London would be an amalgamation of Middx and Essex, South London would be an amalgamation of Kent and Surrey , and Southampton would be the joining of Hants and Sussex.
  • Not for me thanks. None of the Northants team that actually won the tournament two years ago would have even got a sniff of being in the City of Nottingham or Birmingham squad if they were in the business of bidding for top international players to play.

There's the question of who pays those un-selected players wages while they are sitting around during the best weather missing out on the best pitches too?

And having the crescendo of the season about a month before it actually ends sounds a bit odd to me?
  • I fully support it as long as the revenue goes back into furthering county cricket and the national team.

I think this is key. The cricket for those kids that play for schools and clubs effectively ends the middle of July at which time football is already the talk of the streets. We need to keep the younger generation interested in the sport for more than 10-12 weeks of the year. Then, hopefully, they will be hooked on the sport for ever more.

Sadly I think, like premier league football, it is more likely to go straight into the pockets of the players.
  • The clamour for first class cricket in East London is almost overwhelming at times.

  • Dead against This! The county system is the beat way to bring through young English talent!
  • The current T20 country thing is a complete mess, so all for this
  • A concentrated T20 tournament in late May- June this year on terrestrial TV would have been perfect timing, no football to clash with, and before the Ashes
  • i think franchises are the way to go ..however it would probably signal the beginning of the end for the county system as we know it

the weather in England doesnt help we just havent enough dry stuff to go round

if played in August it would run paralel with a test series in England so would one detract from the other ?

Maybe scheduled for the days in between the Tests?
  • What a load of bollocks, I'm Kent end of, I would never go and watch anyone else.
  • Shame there are still a load of Ostriches around.i'll pick them up on my square-wheeled chariot to see England get slaughtered......again.
  • Twat

    Ostrich.
  • Yer let's fuck Kent, off,it's becoming ever increasingly evident , the test ground counties and the income they generate are pushing further away, t20, is a good income stream for a cash strapped county, let's take that away. But heyho I'm a Ostrich.

I'm happy to reconsider my position if you can come up with a reasonable counter argument to the points I raised Pres'. And you can explain how fewer English players and more foreign players will stop England get[ting] slaughtered again. Hasn't exactly worked well with football?
  • No thank you as far as I am concerned.

It's the cricketing equivalent of MK Dons.
  • Hands up everyone who wants to ditch history to follow a faked forged fabricated phoney simulated sham soft-shelled pseudo-sport.
  • Hands down from me, its just to generate money nothing to do with the well being of sport.

    See Premiership as an example.
  • Maybe do the same with football?

Merge us with Palace and Millwall into a mega club South London United, 40,000 every week, a club for all South London football fans.

    Maybe not!!!!

Take yer point Algarve. However, i just believe that it has to be for the benefit of England, for example 1) look at India post IPL - they have got stronger and better at it. 2) if you were to consider the South London team, which could be Kent and Surrey, then you would have 22 players to pick from , you could ditch the plodders who bowl at 70 mph , you could ditch the non-spinning spinners, have the best batsmen from the 2 teams, add in a couple of international 20/20 stars, and the quality of the team would rise along with the quality of the player available to play for England - my view is that anyone who doesnt want change is quite obviously happy to watch a sub-stadard product with c-list overseas players and is quite content to watch England get eliminated at first hurdle of the tournos forever. You cant resist change - it has to happen for the benefit of England.
  • Thats not to say that the SL team wouldnt consist of 10 Surrey players plus Billings - who'll likely defect to Surrey the year after anyway.

Thats unfortunately the way it is Steve. However, Kent would likely have a bigger income stream with a SL team because you could expect the proceeds to be split between the 2 counties, and if the Oval is full with 18k most nights then the receipts from 9k would be more than Canterbury can hold/get ?

Like the Alliteration Stig. Dislike the content !.
I'm sure you could have squeezed 'full-of-foreigners' in there too somewhere?
