  • Yes, just when I had forgotten it H&A brings it back. We were outside the ground when we heard a roar that we had won a penalty. Went back in and stayed to the end.

Don't miss going to that scummy ground, hope they stay out the league for an age. Remember so many beatings there including the 3-0 opening dayer under Mullery in 1981 who we thought was the new messiah! 2-0 on a snowy December (Friday?) night, and in the Luton end during the away fan ban when lost 1-0 to a Roy Wegerle goal.

I was there. Got caught up with Luton supporters in the town centre and ended up chanting anti Charlton songs until I could slip away with my scarf hidden under my coat.
  • Didn't go but boy did I get some stick at school, always wanted Luton to lose every week after that and then a few years later they nick our 2 brightest young players, even now, aged 50, I'm glad they're where they are.

I was there. I'm sure the ref (Kirkpatrick of the bald head and sideburns) only gave us a penalty out of sympathy. Wasn't our best player Wood?

That will teach you to leave early.
  • I think there was still about 20 minutes to go at 7-0, I thought it might get to ten.
A very young Stevie Gritt came on as sub at right back and did a great job in stemming the tide.

We always had a crap record away at Luton through the 70,s and 80,s and always lost quite heavily. Must have seen us at least 8 times there and the first time I saw us get anything there was when we won 1.0 through a Gary Nelson strike in the 1st half back in the early to mid 90,s.

We managed a couple of 1-1 draws in the 70's and I seem to remember KP and big Dave Shipperley in the team who played in red and black striped away kit (or was it blue and black) at the beginning of that decade.

yep I was there also went to Brighton when we let in seven (not sure what year that was).

83/84 season as a former Albion work colleague regularly reminded me at which point I reminded him of the beating we gave them shortly after they beat, at the time, all conquering Liverpool in the FA Cup 5th round 1983 to chants of 'are you watching Liverpool' echoing around the Valley. I also told him how far did he want to go back because as a kid I saw us smash them 5-3 at the old Goldstone in the 60/61 season ;-)

Me too. Took our seats and having had a few too many started giving it large to the Brighton fans sitting nearby. These days I keep my mouth shut.
  • At Brighton we were five down at half time. We tried to leave then and the copper told my mate we would have to stay and suffer it!

Redchaser - there may have been a 5-3 in 60/61 but remember the 5-3 in the 85/86 promotion season. Oh the ecstasy when Flan put us 4-3 up in the last minute. Still time for Rob Lee (?) to make it five though.

Had a season ticket which carried over to Sh*thurst but had two little ones so couldn't do many aways apart from the London ones 3-0 at Fulham springs to mind think Steve Thompson scored that night. Edit: Thommo never scored that season according to VOT/VOJ

I must admit my memories are clouded by the local Greene King Abbott ale. Just as well the Luton pubs closed at 2 o'clock. At the time I was pretty certain that Kirkpatrick had awarded us a penalty purely out of sympathy.
