  • And I was there...
  • Me too. I can still remember how we all celebrated like we had just won something as Flanagan slotted that late penalty to make it 7-1. Ha ha ha. Happy days!!
  • Remember it well. Ricky Hill's big dipper that looked like it was going miles over the bar, then suddenly dipping down into the net.
The strangest thing was passing Andy Nelson and Harry Cripps in the same car at the Redbridge roundabout. I reckon they must have left five minutes before the end.

That's the thing about how different it was in previous years, and how so much less importance was put on it all. You were all still there when 7-0 down, yet if it was now the vast majority would of left at 3-0, 4-0....
  • Never mind 3 or 4. I heard rumours of people leaving our game with Sheff Wed at half time at 0-2!

ps Did Campbell really 'catch' the ball for the pen?
  • Lol - I'd forgotten that game - actually brings back some good memories. There were a reasonable number of Charlton there ... arrived early and we all had a good drink - very noisy despite the score.
  • I was there...St Pancras was a little lively after the match, if I remember rightly.
  • Just a bit !
  • Not as lively as The Arndale centre in Luton.

I can still remember a fridge freezer making it's way down an escalator.
  • Went on Lewis coaches with my Dad. In my wisdom as a youngster decided to wear colours - well, a bright red jumpsuit (they really were fashionable then...) and a white top underneath. Did I feel a prat walking back to the coaches afterwards or what? Then there were the 7 finger salutes from the Luton fans as the coach drove off, then from the Forest fans as we passed their coaches, then from the Arsenal fans as we drove through North London, etc...

It was only 2-0 at half-time and we'd been well in the game - the Ricky Hill looper was the killer.

  • It made me laugh at half time against Sheff Wed the bloke next to me (late twenties) said that this was the worst performance of a Charlton team he had ever seen. I asked how long he'd been coming. About ten years was the reply. I smiled. "I thought so". Said I. "How could you tell?". He replied. "You obviously don't remember the 7-1 thrashing by Luton then?" I replied. His eyes widened and he shook his head. "Bloody hell we've had some much more dire performances in my time"

The scoreline was such a shock that I don't think it really sunk in until I read the papers the next day. I remember the goal by Ricky Hill like it was yesterday.
  • bump for any newbies.
  • Unfortunately I was at this game.

Thats all I can think of to say.
  • Fortunately, I actually missed it.

I see the referee was that fat little bald twat, Roger Kirkpatrick - the 'star' of every match he refereed.

He was funny the first time you saw him, bit of a novelty with his flamboyant schoolteacher style of handling players - but he soon became an attention seeking irritation on the game.

Some of the old hands on here will tell you more.
  • One that I missed...not sure why..... but the shock lived with me for days!
  • Yes I was there, was that the Luton game where we got a police escort as we all walked from the station to the ground? Actually it wasn't so much an "escort" more a rounding up and making sure we went straight to the ground - oh happy days.

But even he took pity on us that day - if I remember rightly, ours was a very soft shout for a pen!
  • I was there but can't remember anything other than 7-1.

Who were you shouting for? ;-0)
  • Sounds like you still do, Charlie. Or at least Charlton/the Board.

I'm amazed and proud of you MOG that you stayed until the 82nd minute :-)
  • Happy Birthday!
  • Don't remind us!!!!
  • Jesus Christ, those were the days!
  • I think this may have been the game where the OB made us take our DM's off...second thoughts, nah it was really cold, and my feet were freezing, so must have been earlier in the 70's......they mashed us 5-0 at home as well
  • You see, things really could be worse......
  • As usual the Programme can be seen here

  • We always had a crap record away at Luton through the 70,s and 80,s and always lost quite heavily. Must have seen us at least 8 times there and the first time I saw us get anything there was when we won 1.0 through a Gary Nelson strike in the 1st half back in the early to mid 90,s.

  • I was at my Aunt's that day and remember the legendary Peter Burrowes on LBC saying that Flanagan had started the comeback when he scored our consolation penalty.
