This is probably come up before so forgive me if it has but when we went 4-0 down yesterday my friends and I started pondering it (sparked by a quick reference to Carl Leaburn). Any suggestions? I have some really good shouts but I'm interested in what people can come up with. There are a couple of reserves who are six foot five but they must have made a full appearance to qualify.

  • Dave Shipperley - Paul Hince?
  • Aboyobi Kombiya an 8ft 3 inch Watutsi signed by Theo Foley whose career was cut short by ankle ligament injury sustained by doing the pogo at the 1972 Charlton Christmas party.

I believe that we once had the tallest and the shortest players in the league at the same time.

Not the same player though !

does it depend on how far away you are from the player?

    Phil Chappell

  • Little Johnny Harrison, 5'2" if I remember rightly, nearly as small as Solly.

Phil Warman, I thought was small, but he is 5 ft 6. Maybe because, I was high up on the terracing and it was far away from the pitch and I was only little myself. He would last about 5 minutes without getting sent off these days, a ferocious tackler.

Keith Peacock ? I couldn't see on a search how tall he is. Great player though, very nippy in his day.

(Gavin Peacocks middle name is Keith BTW).
  • Richie Bowman was fairly small.

    wasn't mark kinsella pretty short?

EDIT: eek, about the same height as me, for some reason he always looked quite small.

    Tallest - John Pearson

Shortest - Keith Jones, John Vaughan (for a 'keeper!)

The Big Ship (Dave Shipperley) can't be far off the tallest. Frank Reed the keeper is another.

Any number of contenders for the shortest. I agree with Queensland that Johnny Harrison must be a contender.

I thought you would have mentioned John Hewie Len as one of the tallest in our lifetime. Edit only 6'2'' could have sworn he was taller!

In answer to my own question I believe the smallest player was Johnny Harrison (as pointed out by Queensland Addick) who was 5'2 (and three-quarters!) and the tallest I believe was a 'keeper called Mike Kearns who made a few appearances on loan in 72/73 and was 6'4 and a half. Carl Leaburn, Jason Lee and Bob Bolder were all 6'3 but I notice one of our reserve keepers Pope is 6'5.

He is not as tall as you might think. Just looks tall because he is thin. 6' 1'' max.

I think Albert Utenboogardt (? spelling) was 6' 5". Goalkeeping reserve to Sam Bartram but did play in the first team.

Good call on Harrison - I'd forgotten about him

Jason Lee seemed really tall and George Shipley small (but it was ages ago and Solly is probably half his size)

    Jason Lee seemed really tall
That was only cos he had 8 inches of pineapple on his bonce.

The tallest player this season has got to be Solly......stood head and shoulders above everyone else.
