Penalties - League One 2024/25

On the Lincoln Match Thread on Saturday I made a comment early on about refs and penalties:

Never mind Smith, if only we'd beaten Brum and Disney to their choice of refs and linos.

The number of pens they've had this season - and what they've been given for - has been borderline scandalous.

On Sunday, because I'm a sad bugger with nothing else to do, I looked up the penalty stats for this season ... and what I found was both shocking and surprising.

These are the number of penalties awarded and scored so far this season:

Awarded Scored Missed
1 Birmingham City 13 12 1
2 Wycombe Wanderers 9 6 3
3 Peterborough United 7 6 1
4 Shrewsbury Town 6 3 3
5 Mansfield Town 5 3 2
6 Rotherham United 5 5 0
7 Stockport County 5 5 0
8 FC Reading 5 5 0
9 Stevenage 4 2 2
10 Lincoln City 4 2 2
11 Northampton Town 4 2 2
12 Wrexham 4 3 1
13 Cambridge United 4 3 1
14 Bolton Wanderers 4 3 1
15 Exeter City 3 1 2
16 Huddersfield Town 3 1 2
17 Blackpool 3 3 0
18 Barnsley 3 3 0
19 Charlton Athletic 3 3 0
20 Bristol Rovers 2 2 0
21 Wigan Athletic 1 1 0
22 Crawley Town 1 1 0

Burton Albion and Leyton Orient are yet to be awarded a penalty (and Wigan's only came last night).

The shocking bit: Birmingham are getting a penalty, on average, every three matches.
The surprising bit: Wrexham have only had four penalties (it must be every other bloody decision that goes their way then).

We've only had three penalties this season - I know we can be a bit one-eyed and looking at our matches through red-and-white-and sometimes-yellow-or-grey-tinted glasses but we should have been given more than that. Ironically one of our spot kicks was to salvage a draw in the last minute at home to Wrexham :D

How about penalties conceded?

Conceded Scored Missed
1 Peterborough United 7 5 2
2 Bolton Wanderers 6 6 0
3 Exeter City 6 5 1
4 FC Reading 6 5 1
5 Stockport County 6 4 2
6 Rotherham United 5 5 0
7 Cambridge United 5 4 1
8 Wrexham 5 4 1
9 Wycombe Wanderers 5 4 1
10 Shrewsbury Town 5 3 2
11 Burton Albion 5 3 2
12 Barnsley 4 4 0
13 Crawley Town 4 4 0
14 Leyton Orient 4 3 1
15 Stevenage 4 3 1
16 Mansfield Town 4 1 3
17 Bristol Rovers 3 3 0
18 Huddersfield Town 3 3 0
19 Lincoln City 3 1 2
20 Blackpool 2 2 0
21 Charlton Athletic 2 2 0
22 Northampton Town 2 1 1
23 Wigan Athletic 1 0 1
24 Birmingham City 1 0 1

What a surprise: Birmingham are doing well on that front too.

You can't really say that teams at the top are getting the decisions and those at the bottom are getting shafted because Shrewsbury - bottom of the league table - have had the fourth-most number of penalties.

If you like to see penalties in matches, steer of Wigan: only two have been awarded in their 40 matches so far.

Comments

  • We don't get many penalties due to the way we enter the box. We rarely have someone entering the box at pace and not getting a shot off but being felled. Your instinct says Small and TC would be tripped up but teams are wise to that so try to shepherd them into other players instead of diving in. None of this is a criticism, just a playstyle observation
  • most teams won't get near enough to Birmingham's box to get a pen
  • Wrexham have had four penalties... and three have been awarded in their last four games!!
  • If it comes to a penalty shoot-out at Wembley, let's hope we face Wycombe.
