Doubt it’s us but Jamie Donley is having a medical at a championship club today.

I know people are keen on him but with Knibbs, Carey and Berry here already I can’t see us going for him and also think spurs would probably rather he went somewhere else

"✍️ Spurs striker Jamie Donley is set to join Stoke on loan.

He impressed on loan at Leyton Orient last season 💫

    Shame

    West Brom.

Donley is good but do we actually need him, I'd argue not. Knibbs and Carey are both good options in the same role and we potentially have Fullah coming through from our own academy.
Agree. Sometimes it can be detrimental to have too many options in one spot. Players become disillusioned
  • I have to say I am surprised we haven’t seen a natural RWB come in especially as we have let Assiimwe go out on loan. Apter is a great attacking option down that side but not a natural defender.

We never needed Donley in addition to Knibbs and Carey, we have loads of attacking options now, once everyone is up to speed.

  • Apparently within the last twenty minutes Stoke have pipped West Brom to the signing of Jamie Donley.

For the team that we are, Knibbs is better than Donley
  • Donley is a good player. But we shouldn't be putting more budget into that position after signing Knibbs (who I'd prefer anyway).

We need a RWB (possible starter), LWB COVER (I'd be happy with Bennett), holding Midfielder to cover Coventry.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm worried about CB. Burke isn't reliable, I feel like we are a Lloyd Jones injury away from being very short.

  • Funny how we’ve had two late hijacks of deals this week. The Akpom one is funnier though because Ipswich have Birmingham this weekend

Apter video was great but it was all about his attacking prowess which showed off his skill at cutting inside and his ability on the ball but from memory can't remember any clips of his defensive work ?

I haven't watched any of the 'friendlies' as there was live competitive sport going on at the same time and it's mainly about fitness and different players getting use to each other. Hence why Apter and Carey were on the same wavelength according to info on CL.

We need to play to Rob Apter's strengths, not his possible weaknesses.
  • Donley would have improved us and would have started, wouldn't have been a case of lack of game time I imagine.

A 3 man midfield of Coventry, Donley, Knibbs would have been top to watch, so it's a shame.

Hopefully we are after another type like Donley who can score and assist in the double figures as well as being combative, we don't need more than one DM when we have Coventry and play 5 at the back imo.

Knibbs described as a box-to-box midfielder again today. When we are in the swing of things I can see him playing there.
  • Think Knibbs will play in a hybrid 10/8 role, Berry did similar last year but Gilbert couldn’t quite master it positionally. Knibbs was basically doing it last season (albeit a bit further back) so seems a pretty natural fit

  • Would have liked Donley but get in the era of PL sides wanting guaranteed football, all their wages paying and hefty loan fees that it probably wouldn't have worked out.

Just an RWB and a years deal for Bennett now I would guess.

I'm very sure that we will - no ITK, just my view. Lembikisa has been given a good long run out, there was the interest in the Japanese player too - we're definitely in the market for one but as with all our business this summer they are being very selective about making sure it's the right one. No more signings like Gunter or Matthews because we have run out of time and options.
  • Feels like the transfer window is a bit of a failure now that we've not got Donley - Really hoped that we'd show some ambition this summer... Clearly not though
At least we've managed to hang on to Gas...🙄
  • Anyone with any update on the player meeting that was due to take place yesterday?.

Yes the person who mentioned it initially later said it was with Knibbs

I think Knibbs will play higher up the pitch now he’s a level up. He wins the ball back high up the pitch well, runs beyond strikers and grabs goals and assists. I think he’d be wasted deeper playing for us in the championship when a lot of his best attributes are in the final third.

I might be wrong though, the set up you describe could work with Knibbs and Carey. Last season Carey played on the left and Knibbs RCM, so could maybe see them either side of Coventry. But I’d personally be surprised if we are that attacking and think it’s more likely to be Coventry and Docherty/Costello with Knibbs/Carey

We weren’t that attacking in league 1, and after replacing Small with Apter I can’t see us also going for a more attacking midfield combination. More likely that Costello has been brought in due to how comfortable he will be defending in wide areas with Apter out on the right

That was in addition to two engine room midfielders. A division up, I'm sure NJ will prioritise us being sold in midfield, especially in tough away games, so it'll be Knibbs as the most advanced of the 3 central midfielders.
