For me i still think we need a CM, RWB and possibly, if i'm greedy, either a finisher or someone creative (Rak-Saki type) up front.
I might be on my own here but the midfield is my biggest worry. I love Coventry, Doc and Anderson and i feel that Rankin-Costello is a solid signing but i can't see us dominating games with those players. In front of them i have similar thoughts on Berry and Carey.
I hope i'm wrong but a quality midfield maestro would make all the difference.
It is not the way NJ plays. Like last season it will be largely a long ball game with Gillesphey et al booting it up front and hoping we have strikers to whom the ball will stick. If it does not, he has terriers in the middle like Anderson to stop the counter attacks. Not pretty but could keep us up with a squad thin on Champ experience.
We definitely need a better centre midfielder who is a bit better on the ball than what we have, I would argue that's the priority over a 10 or a right wing back.
I don't expect us to dominate possession in any game, but we need someone who can control the game a bit better. We won't get away with it as much in the championship, need to at the very least have a bit more control at home, every side is far better than Wycombe and that was a scrap itself.
Striker, right wing back, creative mid and a centre mid and we are looking good. Anything less and it will be a bit of a struggle.
Hope we push for Fukuda, he looks & sounds far more promising than the Wolves wing back
On CM I don’t think we’ve seen enough of JRC yet to rule out him being an upgrade.
Yeah he's probably added to our squad, concern is playing 40 games.

Carey plus the youngsters and a new number 10 . Can all play central midfield. Think that’s enough for now.
I would agree if we were still in League 1, that would be decent. We need a bit more quality than that though.
Hopefully we have some more players lined up, we know the quality is there to be picked up.
Well I think you’ll be in for disappointment then as I can’t see us getting another centre mid, maybe someone like Knibbs who can play there. I think you’re doing a disservice to the players we have and have brought in.

Not strong enough , in my view . It was our weakest area last year and we’re in the league above , even if Costello proves an upgrade on the Doc

Well it will come down to how much Carey and Costello improves us plus which ever attacking midfielder comes In , say Knibbs then I think that’ll be strong enough. A lot of times our midfield will just be there to win the ball back and get it out to the wingers. Will also come down to whether we play 352 or 343 and need two or a three in the middle.

Find it quite uncomfortable that a few times it’s been said that we should sign Fukuda because other Japanese players have performed well. He might be great, he might be crap, neither of those things will be because he’s Japanese
I think people are saying that so far all Japanese imports have adapted well to the British game, other nationalities haven't faired as well. It is a statement of a perceived fact based on appearances made etc, not due to any ethnic slur or profiling.

A disservice to the players? Hardly harmful. Football opinions are part and parcel of the game, my view on Charlton Life isn't going to harm anyone.
I support Charlton Athletic, not select players. If I don't believe players are good enough it doesn't really make too much difference in the grand scheme, they'll either prove me wrong or they won't.
I want us to be competitive, win games and stay up. I also want to watch quality footballers, that midfield is very league 1 as things stand on paper. Hopefully that proves to be wrong, but I would like to see some real quality added in that midfield, cause if I stack it up as a whole against the rest of the league, it doesn't look good at all.
Hopefully the talk of no centre mid coming in is smoke & mirrors.

That is the same for any player we signed ? that's football - they might be great or might be crap - Adahme case in point he is absolute dogshit - huge fee and now the forgotten Charlton player NJ never ever mentions him.
Sometimes we do need to look overseas to give a different style to our play to our game - different cultures bring different work ethics - look back at big impact players for us in the past Kishishev, hreidarsson, Jenson, JJ, Di Canio, el karakouri, Shaun Bartlett to name a few - I wouldn't get uncomfortable about that

I suppose I mean you’re saying that the midfield isn’t good enough but we’re the second most inform in the country going in to the season and we’ve added to the squad.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t look elsewhere, I’m saying we shouldn’t say he’ll be success because other Japanese players have. Just like it would have been wrong to say any Dane would be good because Jensen was. I’m sure there are Japanese players who haven’t adjusted too well, just as there are Danes, French players etc.
I think everyone should calm down and trust NJ will recruit the squad he needs. We don’t know the system this year. He does. I’m sure he’s pretty well qualified to recruit for that system.
We know now it’s only a couple more in the door, so let’s see what comes through.
Also there’s lots of players been written off before competitive balls have been kicked. Let’s focus on supporting rather than saying x, y, z player isn’t good enough
I think we’ll likely line up something like this on the opening day, plus we want another 2/3 it’s a huge squad at the moment.

I think Leaburn will start if he’s deemed fit enough, we will see if he can get through a couple of 60mins in the next couple of weeks. I see our striking options as one of Leaburn/Godden and then one of TC/Olaofe

I don't believe it's good enough for the season ahead in the championship. Those points were earned and the form was in the league below. I think the defence will transition well, no concerns there, but teams will get more chances against us because we will see less of the ball. Better quality players will probably punish us.
I think a lot of those midfielders are good at certain roles, but none of them have what I think we are going to need as a balanced centre mid.
Anyway let's not turn this into a debate and clog the thread, I am just saying I hope our transfer business isn't near done, if people are happy with what we have got that's also fine.
I don’t see Fukuda happening now. His club reportedly rejected a loan bid with an option to buy but why would they loan out their captain with no guarantee of a purchase. He’s obviously not surplus to requirements there and I’d imagine only a sizeable bid would even be entertained. I don’t see Charlton paying out a big fee for such a risk.
They have already loaned out their captain - Sota Kawasaki - to Mainz in Germany, with an option to buy.
No idea why they’d do that, when sitting 4th in the league, but if it’s good enough for him perhaps that’s why Charlton enquired about the loan option first for Fukuda. Gives the club and player the chance to see whether the move works for them both.
We definitely need a better centre midfielder who is a bit better on the ball than what we have, I would argue that's the priority over a 10 or a right wing back.

Coventry is our control. It is hard for us to add the kind of player you want without sacrificing how strong we are off the ball, which is much more important to us. Put a playmaker in our side and it probably makes us worse, because we will lose the off the ball strengths our midfield offer. Ideally you get a player that can do both, but that’s really not easy as a newly promoted side on our budget
The way Jones sees “control” in games is very different to most teams. It’s more about territory and where the ball is on the pitch rather than us having it and moving it about
Our midfield is definitely the area I am more concerned about, but JRC could be the player we need there, too early to say
NJ said last they were looking at two more incoming.
Given our new and welcome "under promise, over deliver" stance (we were said to be looking at 6 or 7 but have already done 7 and still looking) I say we are looking at 2 to 4 more signings.
One would seem to be a RWB.
The others I would say are likely to be attacking midfielders and forwards.
A lot will depend on how serious the injuries to Berry, Godden and Manion are, IMHO.
A few will go out on loan ie Asiimwe, Kanu, maybe M'Bick if others come in in their positions but might stay or only leave last minute depending on other injuries.

I think it’s fair enough to comment on people we’ve seen in our first team (in the league below) then others are welcome to disagree . Pontificating on players we’ve never watched play for us would be farcical, I agree. .
