When you consider that Birmingham and Wrexham will in no way be in a relegation battle next season, we will have to get more points than 3 established Championship teams. Massive task ahead.
We’ll see about Wrexham, they might have some Financial Fair Play challenges and shipping out some of their dead wood will be hard given the contracts they’re on.
They generate an insane amount in commercial income & that’s only going to go up. I reckon they are the club least impacted by FFP because of that! As commercial income counts. They dwarf everyone else in that sense.
They generate a lot more than us, but their revenue (according to most recent accounts published) wasn’t even the highest in League One (Birmingham) and miles lower than the very big clubs in the Championship (Leeds most recent published accounts showed revenue about five times higher than Wrexham).

The revenue raised by Wrexham made them a big fish in the National League & Leagues One & Two but they are now swimming with some very big fish financially and certainly don’t “dwarf” the rest of the division.
Leeds United are a genuine big club though. They have a national & even national supporter base. I put them in the same bracket as likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle and Everton.

Interesting re Birmingham City. They are a regional big club though.

Championship exposure will allow Wrexham to get far bigger sponsorship than all the clubs now in Championship imo. My point was though, they will not need to worry about FFP. That is not something that will hold them back. It does hold back clubs that ‘only’ average 20,000 odd when trying to compete with parachute payment clubs. Wrexham can get around that if someone global brand want to pay them £10m for a sponsorship deal.
I know, that’s exactly why Wrexham won’t “dwarf” everyone in the Championship from a revenue perspective. I think they’ll have more issues with FFP than you anticipate and won’t be able to just outspend the rest of the league.
    Leeds United got promoted mate.

Wrexham will be the box-office club in the Championship as far as neutrals (North Americans) and sponsors are concerned. Some clubs may even do half and half scarves for the fixture!

I don’t think they will try or can outspend everyone. But FFP with multimillion pound sponsorship deals will not be an issue.
  • Unless our owners suddenly decide to go big, then some of the players mentioned in this thread are going to be WAY out of the price range on what we're likely to spend.

The first couple of transfers will tell us for more than words, what level of budget we are working with.
  • It’s less about the fees, you can amortise these over a number of years It’s more about the salary demands of who we might be interested in
our wage bill this year was circa 8.5 million which would have put us in bottom 6 of championship teams this year
  • An example is Alfie Doughty. He is on circa £25k a week more than three times our highest earner yet would be a good first for us.
  • Fit for us!

There is a graphic on the ‘Championship Expectations’ thread that would place us in bottom three of wage spend with Oxford and Portsmouth this coming season, if nothing changed. Both survived. So it can be done. The interesting statistic though, is the fact that the club would need double the spending on wages to be on a par with likes of Preston, Hull City, Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday. Clubs we need to finish above. This is perhaps where the extra tv money comes in.

Jesus, that just shows how stark the difference is between League One and the Championship.

Yep nobody will have a clue really what kind of budget we have probably until Rich Cawley or an ITK start naming transfer target names.

Indeed. Proven Championship players will cost £15-25k in wages. So 5 proven Championship players will cost c£4m a year. That’s without transfer fees, so for players that are proven, but not wanted by likes of Southampton or say Middlesbrough. Even promising L1 players will want to be paid a decent amount, as likes of Bristol City and Norwich City will pay the going rate, so we’d need to match that.
  • Accurate rumours have been noticeably quieter for a couple of years. In part down to being in L1 but also because since Gallen left the ship was tightened. This window I'm expecting more spurious claims from unreliable "publications" but still little from Cawley, unless Chapple likes to chat that is

Malik Mothersille would be a decent signing. He looked dangerous in the games v Posh. 6ft2 tricky winger/striker. 21 and from south London.
He’d be top of my list but a lot of teams will feel the same .

Before the playoffs, had we got promoted I didn’t expect us to pay £1m+ for anyone, but seeing the TV money is about £11m it doesn’t seem completely unrealistic. Depends how much the ownership wants to go for it. With NJ talking about doing more than just surviving I’d have thought they have similar ambitions. No point buying a club just to try to survive in the Championship, you might stay up for the first season on a small budget but it’ll eventually catch up with you.

Another angle is whether we attract any big offers and sell one of our best players to fund more investment in the squad. I wouldn’t rule that out.
It'll be interesting what happens with Miles. I don't see him staying the summer without either signing a new deal or leaving.

I can't see the likes of TC, Coventry or Ramsay attracting the sort of bids that we can't refuse. Until they show they can step up a level, the richer clubs will wait and see.
  • I definitely think jones will dip into the Luton Town locker again . Not sure how many players are still there when Jones was there or even if they are good enough as last season might indicate.

Carlton Morris is the only name that comes to mind really but probably way out of our budget for a striker.

He might look to dip , although only Berry has worked , and I don’t think he will start next season in the side.  Doughty is the one I would take - nothing to do with his history with us .  Think he could play in a few positions , but I am sure someone richer will snap him up.

Unfortunately it looks like Lamine Yamal is set to sign with Barca for another 6 years, so we’ll have to park that one
On a serious note, kinda, would Jones like him? We have to factor in the kind of players Jones will want, as well as what kind of players may want to play for him. He is pretty marmite. Will a creative player choose Jones over playing for a team like Swansea or Norwich, where the approach will be more attacking & creative football.

    Adebayjo too.
  • We have an academy.

If we're going to raid a relegated Championship club, I'd rather look at Plymouth. They looked a decent side, and only went down because of the Rooney effect at the start of the season.
  • Jordan Gabriel being mentioned again

No thanks, they've all got losing mentality right now, double relegation from Premier League all the way to League 1, players on inflated wages, I wouldn't touch any of them with a barge pole
