The London Boroughs are we know them are 60 years old but some of the name might have been different.
The old boroughs of Woolwich and Greenwich were merged and to avoid upsetting either a compromise "Royal Charlton" was suggested according to the Londonist website (well worth a follow if you like the greatest city in the world).

Indeed a lot of borough names were compromises, to appease the former boroughs. Brent (Wibley) was a bland name used rather than the far more well known Wembley.Henry Irving said:
