MATCH PREVIEW: Peterborough United vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 22nd March 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off

Peterborough United vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 22nd March 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off (Live on SkySports+)
Referee: Scott Tallis

Introduction
It certainly gets easier writing Match Previews when the team is doing well, and you don't feel like the harbinger of doom by reminding people that there is another upcoming game. Charlton hosted fellow Athletic side; Wigan last Saturday, and based off the display at the DW, it could have been a tough encounter, yet the Addicks handled it with ease. Now though are two games, back to back, that could be real banana skins for our aspirations of finishing in second. Not one Charlton fan thought we'd have our eyes on such lofty ambitions as we entered 2025.

The Opposition
Name: Peterborough United (18th) - Manager: Darren Ferguson
Ground: London Road
Previous League Result: Cambridge United 0-1 Peterborough United

Next up for the Addicks is a trip to Cambridgeshire with Peterborough United awaiting our arrival.

Of course its not been that long since we last played Peterborough, just over five weeks ago, and if there is one game that stands out in our recent run of form, it was our performance at the Valley, with the Addicks all but dominating play against Posh, add in frayed tempers with a Red Card, and a tight 2-1 score line, and it probably wasn't a fair reflection as Charlton overcame their poor form against Peterborough, recording our first League win against them since 2012

Frustratingly you have to go back fifteen years to find our last win at London Road, a 5-1 victory which would be a nice outcome, whilst our last double against our opponents this weekend came in that same season, we won 3-2 at the Valley in the reverse fixture in that particular season - So a draw could well be a reasonable  expectation come 5pm, especially with returning top scorer: Kwame Poku back from injury, and with him and Ricky-Jade Jones in the side, our defence will have their work cut out come Saturday afternoon... Thankfully, Tayo Edun, who has been a consistent performer and thwarted Thierry Small at the Valley, will be suspended for this clash.

In terms of form over the last five games, and its the top two in the form table facing off against each other... Neither team has lost in this time period, whilst Peterborough have two draws, compared to Charlton's one. In terms of dropping two points, this is one of few places where Charlton can probably afford to it... A further three, and it further pressure on teams around us, what with fixtures elsewhere this coming weekend.

Charlton Team News
Already we've seen how much Peterborough's pace can cause our back line problems, what with the away side making a fast, but ineffective start at the Valley back in February - Its the ideal game to keep Kayne Ramsay at Right Centre-Back, whilst it might also be worth keeping the team largely the same from the one that we saw against Wigan last week, meaning that Thierry Small is then there to protect Macauley Gillesphey, who since Blackpool has been a different player to the one we've come to expect.

In terms of the Right Wing-Back slot, we could see Tennai Watson starting just his third game of the season, or we could see Tyreece Campbell in the unfamiliar role, which he's been able to fulfil when required at times. Of course if that happens, you'd expect to see Miles Leaburn starting up top with Matty Godden, yet could naturally be irrelevant if Josh Edwards is fit to return to the squad, having been forced off against Crawley Town recently.

Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Campbell - Coventry - Docherty - Small
Berry
Leaburn - Godden

Substitutes Bench: Reid - McIntyre - Watson - Anderson - Gilbert - Ahadme - Hylton

Cheers, I put the placeholder in when typing out the Preview, to remember to go and check before posting... Obviously forgot!!
  • Hope Edwards is back. Mainly because Peterborough fans seem to think Harley Mills a 19 year old defender with not much experience will be the replacement for Edun. Would love to see how he deals with Small and Ramsay on that side.
  • Feeling good about this one . May mate who’s a season ticket holder at Peterborough says they can’t deal with set pieces and with Edun and their captain missing I think we’ll win . I’m going for a 2-0 win . Godden and Jones
Hope you’re right Beds…..though for some reason I’ve always thought of The Posh as being a bit of a bogey team for us.🤞🤞🤞
    I’m going by the way.

You’re not wrong. Over the past 18, Peterborough have won 8, drawn 5. We’ve won 5. If your glass is half full, we’re due a break! If your glass is half empty, we’re not likely to get a result.
  • Can we be the first club to harness the power of ‘dark energy’?

  • Good work as always with the preview. Thanks for doing them, it's appreciated.

I don't recall beating Posh 3 2 to clinch automatic promotion though. They weren't in League One that season, I don't think. I presume it's 2011/12 you're referring to.
The results mentioned were in 2010-11, but we didn’t get promoted that year, automatically or otherwise.
  • Feels like a huge banana skin this one and the sort of game we'd lose 2-0 with a poor performance.

I don't know much about Kyprianou - is he a good player at this level?

Thanks for correcting me, have edited the post... It was 2010/11 that we beat them 5-1 / 3-2, we naturally didn't win automatic promotion that season, as got my wires crossed with 2011/12. Not sure why I put that we even won automatic promotion THAT day, as it was clearly achieved up at Carlisle even.
  • 2-1 to the Posh
    play offs it is
  • Tough game this, they are in decent form and tbh I think we will lose this one 2-1. I really hope Im wrong but I think this will be the game that sets our sights firmly on playoffs and we let 2nd place go
  • urghh, horrible flashbacks to having to watch Frozen.
  • They do have good players, but without two of their better ones, we should get something out of the game. We still miss far too many chances and one day we will smash a bagfull. Watson may be a good fit in an away game but he is very limited going forwards. I hope we don't mess with Mitchell playing and Ramsey moving to wingback.  With the week starting with a couple of days off, I hope we don't stat too slowly (as per Rotherham). I have a feeling we might see a few goals, just hope we get more than them!

    3-2 Addicks.

    COYA!
  • Hope Edwards is back but if not i'd go with the team FA has lined up - Watson doesn't impress me at all and should be used sparingly 'to do a job' if no other options
  • and i'd have Chucks on the bench

    Excellent preview as always FA.
Pretty confident we will win this despite our recent performances against them.
We are in such a good place at the moment results wise and the confidence in the dressing room must be sky high.
With Peterborough missing two of their better players  and not much to play for I'm expecting all 3 points to be coming back with us.
Safe travels to all those going, have a great day.
    Charlton 3 Peterborough 1.
  • Can see another three points heading our way, Head would go 1-2...Heart will go 0-3, whatever the score we are gonna win..right
Hopefully Josh is back in the fold, scorers whoever it is that's fine, but can well see Godden opening the scoring and  Macca getting one of his far post bullet headers as starters...COYR
  • Apparently there is an EFL only fantasy football league and Gillesphey is the highest point scorer in it - can't rule the master technician out of some goal involvement
  • Makes me smile to see others on here saying their missing two of their best players, which includes Edun, who was not good enough for us, rarely played this season for us
I am happy for a 0-1 win, if my heart and bum will take the strain 😂👍

This has all the makings of a disappointing day away from home - big following, we rarely win there and the home team's form is turning around just as we come to visit. If they prove me wrong and we have 3 more pts by Saturday evening then I will really start to believe 2nd is on the table (rather than just an outside chance).

I always thought Edun was fine for us, but perhaps not consistently enough, maybe down to appearances being few?...but i'm not really surprised he has proved his worth at Peterborough...

    Yes.
I was looking forward to seeing him play. He will definitely be playing in the Championship next season and is out of contract at the end of this season.
A defensive midfielder who will be missed.
    Every little bit helps.

I think Watson is fine starting if Edwards is not fit. Made some good runs and overall had a really good game v. Wigan.

All in the eyes of the beholder, of course!

as you said all in the eye of the beholder etc but I thought he was defensively very poor.
