MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Wigan Athletic : Saturday 15th March 2025 : KO 15:00

Hi everyone...
Today we are back at The Valley where we are taking on Wigan Athletic in yet another very important fixture, with a chance to get another double to follow on from our opening match of the season, when we got things off to a good start with a 0-1 up at The Brick Community Stadium thanks to a Lloyd Jones late winner, Wigan would probably argue they deserved something from the game, but hey ho!...
Wigan sit in mid table 15th, not troubling either end of the table as it stands currently, but will no doubt provide another tough game, whist trying to avenge that opening day reverse so we will have to be on our game, but I feel we will prove strong enough to get another three points on the board, second spot is so close you could almost touch it...and why not?
Ashley Maynard-Brewer (groin) remains sidelined, whilst regarding concerns raised towards Edwards, Nathan reported "We'll be monitoring that,  It's just stiffness really, it's a fatigue one. It wasn't a mechanism so it's not a real bad pull or anything."...all sound like it ain't as bad as some thought.

We've locked horns on 19 previous occasions, claiming eight wins, the Latics seven and the remaining four encounters resulting in draws, Lloyd Jones bagged the winner in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season, sounds like a close game is in the offing with those stats....

Anyway, here we go...

Team news...

Tennai Watson will make his 50th appearance for the Addicks today with skipper Greg Docherty, Luke Berry and Matty Godden also returning to the line-up for this afternoon’s game against Wigan Athletic at The Valley.

Academy starlet Kai Enslin has been selected on the bench - the versatile midfielder’s first appearance in a league squad. The 19-year-old impressed on his Charlton debut against Bromley in the Vertu Trophy in December and has been a key part of Chris Lock’s title-challenging U21s side.

Watson comes in for the injured Josh Edwards, while Karoy Anderson and Miles Leaburn move to the substitutes bench. Alex Gilbert misses out through illness.

Kayne Ramsay, Lloyd Jones and Macaulay Gillesphey once against start in a back three in front of Will Mannion.

Watson and Thierry Small are likely to operate as wing-backs with Docherty and Berry joining Conor Coventry in a midfield trio.

Godden will resume his partnership with Tyreece Campbell up front.

Enslin, Anderson and Leaburn are joined on the bench by Tommy Reid, Alex Mitchell, Tom McIntyre and Gassan Ahadme.

Charlton: Mannion; Ramsay, Jones, Gillesphey; Watson, Coventry, Docherty (c), Berry, Small; Godden, Campbell

Subs: Reid, Mitchell, McIntyre, Anderson, Enslin, Ahadme, Leaburn

  • Think Godden will replace Miles, Doc for Anderson, possibly Berry back for Gilbert. Think Edwards and Lloyd will be ok to start. COYA.

Saturday afternoons... Ruined by Charlton Athletic since 1905... Thankfully its only 1330!!

Wouldnt have it any other way... Because they're on my mind, are playing the way they should!!

Something tells me, we're on to something good

I’d go along with all that

pitch is looking a lot better looking out from crossbars
  • Anyone know how to get live commentary? I’m missing this one unfortunately.

Go to the OS, select Charlton TV and listen live, should be good
  • No Edwards at all today, nor Gilbert... Enslin comes on to the bench for the latter and Tennai Watson starts, wonder whether it'll be him or Small at Left-Back
  • James Carragher starts for Wigan, who is the spitting image of his Dad

We'll really need to test Tickle their Goalkeeper this afternoon

  • Ahadme ahead of Kanu is criminal .  Would assume Watson straight in for Edwards on the left.
  • Ahadme back and Enslin on the bench, will be interesting to see if they come on or if Jones is reluctant to use them.
  • Ahadme's back. Hopefully come on to score and kick start his season. Shame Edwards is missing.
  • Bolton 0-1 Stockport
  • Watson and Small wingbacks? With Enslin as backup? Ahadme over Kanu or Aneke.
  • Olaofe scores for Stockport v Bolton .. he had a good game v us last week .. sign him up lol (Lewisham boy)

Be nice to see Enslin if we're comfortable with about 20mins to spare

Luke Berry doesnt usually last the 90, but I'd expect to see Anderson replace him.
  • NJ said Aneke is fit for today, but uses Ahadme
  • Better starting line up but the bench looks a bit lightweight with Reid, Enslin & Ahadme. But that's what Nsthan wanted.
  • Down to 5th, for a while 🤔
  • See Wigan have got Mr Tickle in goal...🙄

I mean Jones wanted a Goalkeeper in the summer, wasnt able to get one, and one of his two Goalkeepers is now injured, so what else do you expect with Reid there?
  • Not so many game changers on the bench today. Good to see Ahadme back, I hope he can start to show a bit more now the team is playing better. I personally would’ve put Macintyre in at left back and kept Small on the right, but maybe Watson is left back. That twin wide threat on either side that Small and TC have offered, plus having Ramsay so naturally covering behind Small, has been a huge factor in our run and we’re playing a good defensive side. A lot of pressure in TC to create something today. Might be another one need to win with a set piece.

Hope his arms are not that long 😁
