Name the Players

Found this early 60s youth team postcard in the Peter Croker donation.

I think there are at least three FA Cup Winners in there.

How many can you name?

  • Billy Bonds front row ?

Peter Croker is standing on the left. That looks like Bob Curtis sitting with the ball to the right of him. Struggling beyond that! (edit - as pointed out by Bedsaddick that's actually Billy Bonds not Bob Curtis!)
  • Dennis Booth alongside Bonds
  • Alan Campbell
  • Billy Bonds front row ?
    Correct
  • Charlie Hall next to Alan Campbell

Frank Hill far right in the front row

    Front 2nd left.

I should know who the chap in the suit next to him is but don't.

@Swisdom should get at one more
  • Is that Frank Hill far right front row?

Could it be Charlie Hall who was at CAFC for about 4 decades including physio ?
  • Peter Reeves 3rd on the right. Front row

    Yes, think you are right
  • I'll have a go - back row: far right Jock Basford (trainer) 3rd from right Vic Halom ?
Front row : far left Charlie Hall , Alan Campbell 2nd from left, Denis Booth ,left of ball, Billy Bonds right of ball, Peter Reeves 3rd from right, Frank Hill , manager far right.
    It's been a long time !
  • Marvin Hinton was at CAFC from 1957 to 63 before going to Chelsea so it could be him back row far left in the picture but maybe he was already in the 1st team ?
Plus as he was a CB does he pass the cafc height test?

I would be surprised if that was Marvin Hinton.
  • Vic Halom?
  • Little goalkeepers.

Is that Vic Halom, third from the right and next to the keeper in the back row? Interesting that he was playing left half for the youth team in the game above but would go on to becoming a very useful centre forward and part of Sunderland's 1973 Cup winning side.

I can’t say I recognized him but he was with Sunderland when they the cup in 1973.
  • I’ve got Bonds, Booth, Basford, Hall, Hill, Reeves, Campbell. No idea with the rest.
  • Front row 4th from left John Stenson I think
  • Goal keeper reminds me of John Motson

    Thanks for the above Shirty.
One of the 4 names for CAFC I hadn't heard of was John Salmon: he didn't have a professional career and mainly played in the Essex league including being manager of a team in Brentwood called Herongate Athletic. Apparently he was/is a West Ham fan and the best player he stated he played against was Trevor Brooking which was this game.

The West Ham goalkeeper on the team sheet ended up playing over 500 games for Reading despite being just 5’ 7” - remember him, perhaps due to his surname, from my early football supporting days.

A 5ft 7in keeper is a thing of the past in Professional men's football.
Amazing 471 games for Reading and just the 1 for the hammers.

John Stenson played school football the same time as I did. He scored goals for fun.
