I went to the greyhound racing at Catford Dogs when I was around 20 years old. I knew nothing about greyhound racing. In one race, a hurdles race - I forget the distance - there was a dog called Drumphea. The dog was an outsider at 16/1. My friend, a knowledgeable dog racing fanatic, told me I was wasting £3 of my money if I placed a bet on Drumphea. At the time, Eamonn Dunphy played for Charlton, so choosing Drumphea was an opportunity I could not miss. Suffice to say, Drumphea won the race, and I was £48 richer, a considerable sum for me to win at that time. What's more, Drumphea stumbled over the last hurdle and crossed the line on his back. My friend was apopleptic; his bet on the second favourite came in second, a short bum behind Drumphea. I recall that he thought I should give him my winnings as it was, in his words, 'pure luck'. The Prediction League is like a gamble without winning or losing money, but it gives everyone a chance to gain glory and kudos amongst fellow Lifers.
