If clean sheets win you titles why aren't Burnley top

Just that really.

I've banged on about it long enough & now there's your proof. 24 clean sheets this season & just done 12 games in a row without conceding.

But they aren't top & imo wont get automatic promotion.

So, can we agree that scoring goals does actually matter. (6 of their last 12 games have been 0-0 draws).

  • The season has to have ended in order for you to win a title. Hope that helps.

Isn't your rule that clean sheets don't matter? Both Brum and Sheff Utd are top 3 for clean sheets in their league.
  • Absolutely having one today aren't you Golfie

In league one Leyton Orient have 15 cleans sheets out of 30 matches. Birmingham have 14 out of 29 matches.

Charlton are joint 5th with 13 clean sheets.
  • Burnley will be setting all sorts of records this season. Conceding just 9 goals in 33 games is ridiculous especially when one considers that Chelsea hold the record with 15 goals and that in a 38 match season. The other head scratcher is that 14 of the 39 goals they've scored have come in three matches (two of which were the opening games of the season) and that they've only found the back of the net 25 times in those other 30 games.

Burnley are currently four points behind Leeds (who have a game in hand) and five behind Sheffield United (same number of games and they have to go to Burnley). I think Parker would be a fool not to recognise that they are already in the play offs (18 points clear of 7th) and that if he wants them to make automatic promotion then it's time to be more expansive in the vast majority of their remaining matches.
  • I’m no expert - but I thought having the most points makes you win titles?
  • You need to score more goals than the opposition. That means keeping them out at the back and scoring them at the other end. It’s not one or the other, it’s both. Silly for anyone to suggest otherwise.

But the easiest way to score more than the opposition is to let them score zero
No, the easiest way to score more than the opposition is to let them score zero and you score more than zero.
  • Anyone want to guess how many clean sheets, on average, a team has had when winning the premier league over the past 20 years...

Yes. But the proviso there is that you actually score one yourself. As I said in my opening post, Burnley have failed to score in 6 of those 12 games that they kept the opposition from scoring. If they had scored ONCE in just 3 of those matches they would have another 6 points and would be top.

I know I've set myself for ridicule for starting this thread & I do understand that keeping clean sheets is vital. But I think some if you will agree (but not @ForeverAddickted or @Chunes) that scoring goals is also equally important. In fact more so, because without scoring a single goal the best you'll ever do is draw 0-0.

As I said, I don't expect people to agree with me and I expect to get the usual brickbats that I'm obsessed about this subject, but just wanted to point out that Burnley might break all sorts of records this season for not conceding, but if they can't score at the other end then it might all be for nowt.

  • Best bit about this post about Burnley being in 3rd not 1st is that 1st & 2nd in the Championship are the two teams to have conceded the fewest goals outside of Burnley lol
And why are they above Burnley  ??  Maybe its because it's got something to do with the fact they have scored a lot more goals than Burnley.

The answer as explained many times is that both are as important as each other... Score goals and you take the pressure off the defence... Keep clean sheets and you take the pressure off the attack.

    Its that simple

Its why Football is a TEAM game

We're stuck on 50-pts... But had we kept a clean sheet today we'd be on 51-pts and a place higher... We never looked like scoring (You would know that if you bothered to watch the game) so 53-pts from today was never realistic.

If you can't win... Dont lose... I know you're obsessed with Goal Difference, but how many times have promotion spots or 6th / 7th actually been decided on that?

No it's because they have more points.

Burnley could win every games 1-0 in a season and would be the lowest scorers in the Division I imagine

    1-0, 4-3, 10-9... Still only gets you 3-pts for a win

On average the title winners kept clean sheets in 45% of their games. (17 av).

I'm gonna guess it's the same for this league since I remember Ipswich got something like 45% last season.

    2020/21 season.

Oxford in 6th with 74 points
Charlton in 7th with 74 points.

Oxford into the play offs  with a +7 better goal difference.

So stick that in your bloody pipe and smoke it  !!!!!!!!!!!

lol! Yes Im aware of that campaign... So possibly once, seeing you can't be bothered to do any actual research to backup your "logic"... In how many other seasons?

I wonder even if you understand how Goal Difference works - You say we need to score more goals, but we could have won 3-2 yesterday and thats no different to a 1-0 when it comes to improving your GD. So I will repeat again, you need to score goals AND stop them going in... Stop looking at just one aspect of Football.
  • The way to look at it is, when Burnley down go one up, it’s an opportunity for the opposition to do a golfie, they’re just not capable.

When people say 'titles are built on clean sheets', I get the idea that you're hearing 'You don't need to score any goals.' ?

I think that phrase means that you can score loads of goals, but unless it's backed up by a solid clean sheets record, you're not gonna be up there.
Yes, it surely means that if you get lots of clean sheets goals are less important but you still have to score a half decent number.

Can we please stop calling it “a golfie” now?
