Charlton travelled to top-of-the-table Birmingham looking to build on the win at the Valley in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. But it would be a tough task from the outset.

For the first twenty or so minutes, Birmingham were dominant but Charlton were resolute and equal to the task, if not competitive. In a bizarre moment that caused Birmingham and their supporters to rage, Ashley Maynard-Brewer looked to have handled the ball outside of the box but escaped without punishment. Having escaped that calamity, Charlton looked to get a hold in the game but Birmingham’s righteous indignation proved a problem. Then, in a moment of haplessness, Birmingham’s pressure proved fruitful. Jay Stansfield, the always-angry, snot-nosed, beady-eyed, chinless wonder, made his own opportunity by hounding a complacent Conor Coventry and stealing the ball away to charge down the wing and finish past Maynard-Brewer with a targeted blast from ten yards. That was the only goal of the first half, though Birmingham certainly had a host of opportunities that could have seen them clear.

Charlton were more competitive in the second half, which was, on a whole, a much more scrappy affair. Ashley Maynard-Brewer was replaced through injury by Will Mannion, who looked composed in his return, though he had little to do. Charlton changed shape but to little initial effect, while Birmingham continued to press for more. Further changes were made, first with Daniel Kanu and Karoy Anderson, then with Miles Leaburn and Alex Gilbert coming on. Kanu had a half chance and Leaburn seemed to cause the Birmingham backline trouble but, otherwise, Charlton were rather blunt in attack and real opportunities were rare. I thought the match was poised for a late Leaburn equaliser, more in hope than based on anything on display this afternoon. But that wasn’t to be and Charlton left empty handed.

Birmingham were good for the win. On another day, Charlton may have nicked a result but it’s clear that, though the recent run has been impressive, we’re short of the quality needed to pose trouble at the very top.

Birmingham 1 Charlton 0

Over to you.

Hope no one is moaning when May gets the odd boo, the next time he's down the Valley.

Very frustrating to lose to a single goal that was a result of three individual errors from Campbell, Coventry and the Keeper. Thought we would get out arses handed to us at half time but they are a nasty horrible team and we created almost nothing. Too many weak links.  Solid and we tried hard but shows where we still lack something.  Leaving TC on that pitch when it was clear after 20 mins that he was mentally and physically shot was criminal.

I'm a harsher critical than most but I thought we were awful. They won't have a more comfortable 1-0 all season

Also that surely puts to bed any chat about our squad being ready for the championship. We were miles off them today

    We never looked like scoring.

Yet we beat them 1-0 at the Valley, and deserved something from our game against Preston?

Three games isnt a benchmark for where we could be

We were kept quiet by a much better side (on paper). The league doesn't lie I guess. We're we off it today, or were they too good? Their time wasting with feined injuries took the shine of the game. They knew we could hurt them if we got on the ball, so they just kept interrupting play. It worked. We would love it if the table was turned and we were the ones doing the shithousery. Our run has been phenomenal, so I can't get too down about losing to the top side. Back on the play-offs hunt we go.

They are a good side, well above the level. Ref was awful but AMB should have been sent off so we can't complain. Second half was even but their defenders are even better than their forwards. Needed a bit of luck from a half chance. Shouldn't derail us and we don't have to play them again. Stats were pretty even in terms of shots so we definitely frustrated them a bit. Coventry should have just hoofed that ball into the stand. It wasn;t a game to go behind in.
  • Disappointing, but was to be somewhat expected!

Second to most balls, silly niggly fouls keep being given away, and no real style or pattern to our play!

probably more down/disappointed due to results elsewhere rather than the loss here- but march is unfortunately going to be all or nothing, especially when we have huffed and puffed out way towards the top6 rather than being head and shoulders above the teams we’ve beaten!

TC had an awful game, and just didn’t seem to want to get involved or take the game by the scruff of the neck- Coventry struggled but didn’t have much support from Doc nor Berry!

Exeter HAS to be our turning point and the start of another run- feel Gilbert needs to start ahead of berry, Dixon NEEDS to be on the bench to give us other options than bringing Kanu on (which simply hasn’t worked this season) and we need to start picking up points in a month of constant 6 pointers!

    Charlton V Birmingham 2024/2025

    0-1 Carabao Cup
    1-0 L1
    0-1 L1

so next in sequence must be

    1-0 Wembley, Play Off Final
  • Birmingham are miles better than us, that’s not beyond doubt with the squad they assembled.

But I really don’t understand what this fawning about them is today. We 100% were not embarrassed by them, and basically although unable to really do much ourselves - kept them
    to barely any chances.

Glad the game is out the way now. Plenty teams around us need to play them.

You genuinely think our current squad would survive in the championship?

Today was a free hit, so not bothered by the result. I am bothered by the lack of effort and quality from some players. Can’t believe TC lasted the full 90

God knows... but I dont think one game is enough to judge

When we beat Birmingham 1-0 at the Valley were we suddenly good enough to survive in the Championship?

Not too fussed, always saw it as a free hit after the big wins vs Stevenage and Peterborough, we went into that game with no pressure.

That loss won't define our season, hopefully we can bounce straight back next game vs Exeter like we did after Rotherham.

Without being salty, I thought for how much they spent, they didn't show much class, especially late on. They have a lot of individually talented players, so it was a shame to see them play so cynical.

Anyway, safe travels all, on to the next

No complaints about the score. Birmingham clearly the better team and no real disgrace in losing to them. (I reckon they may go up with a record number of points. Unfortunately).

But I will have one moan. it was obvious after only about 20 minutes that it wasn't an afternoon for fancy football up front - even more so given that Campbell had a pretty awful game today - and that this was an afternoon for a bit of muscle. And yet it was nearly 75 minutes before either Leaburn or Aneke made their bow. Jones should have got one or other of them on much earlier.

What was up with the ref? He was terrible for both sides.

At the end of the day were beat by a moment of brilliance ( and Coventry falling asleep) by a player that cost £15m . Did they really threaten us much apart from that?
We should have been down to ten men anyway . I have no idea what AMB was thinking.

Shit happens. Can't win/play well every game.

Onto Exeter at The Valley where we will bounce back 💪
