Quick off the mark

When I saw Jim Melrose score in nine seconds at West Ham forty-odd years ago, I never imagined I would ever see anything similar again. However, on Saturday I was fortunate to be at Goodison Park to see Abdoulaye Doucoure score Everton's opening goal in ten seconds. Two things I remember about Melrose's goal is that Charlton did not even kick off and some of the fans had not taken their seats. Goals in the first minute are not unusual but those within say twenty seconds are rare, I would think. Has anyone else seen (or missed!) some really quick goals at the start of a match?

  • Feel like I might have imagined this, but thinking Leeds and possibly Ledley King for Spurs both scored first minute goals against us. But these could just be part of the many traumatic nightmares I've had about Charlton over the years.
  • I missed that same Melrose goal.

Loved Upton Park as an away ground for noise.
  • Think Leeds scored at the Valley in the first minute, it was either Alan Smith or James Milner.

Alan Smith scored first minute of the second half as well in a 1-2 defeat...

I was in the North Bank so had to keep quiet.....though I didn't want to. We went in The Boleyn pub before the game....I was with a West Ham supporting mate who I worked with at the time and as we done a Saturday morning (overtime) we went together....he was most impressed with our performance that day.
  • Not within the first minute, but remember the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday in our champions season.

Queue to get in was a nightmare, we were walking up the stairs to seats just as we scored (must have been after 3 or so minutes), then we scored again about 2 minutes later!
  • Melrose’s goal in1986 in the 1-3 victory , did we have any seats that day , i remember being packed in in a third of the end they gave us standing near the corner flag

Must be another match you are thinking of. We won 1-0 in the champions season. Jackson.

There goes my bad memory again!

The 2-2 with our early goals was the season before.

Ledley King scored after 9 seconds at Bradford earlier in the same season Leeds scored at the Valley. His was quicker so we were spared being the fastest Premier League concession. (I'm going off memory here so this could be wrong.)
  • I was also at the Upton Park game to see Melrose score before my seat warmed up.
