Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert on loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level and is comfortable across the frontline, becomes the Addicks' first signing of the January transfer window.
Manager Nathan Jones commented: "I'm delighted to have him. We’ve been looking to add more quality in the final third and Alex provides that. He comes with decent pedigree having played in a very good Championship side this season, who trust us to further his development.
"We don’t really like taking players on loan, but when an opportunity comes up to add real quality, like this, we have to take it."

We mean business and it's all systems to go on the promotion train .
He's quality and will improve us no doubt
Our first signing of the window and can play across the frontline - it’ll be interesting to see if he ends up competing more with Berry or mainly with TC.
Just got to hope he can do a job for us and we push on.
Midfield 3 of Cov, Doc & Gilbert.....not too shabby!!
'I actually really like him - hasn't played an awful lot for us but think he's deserved more of a chance. He's looked most comfortable for us in the number 10 role. Hoping its a loan to get him game time as he's had some injuries this season, rather than it being a view to him moving in the summer as think he's got a lot of potential '
Saying that, welcome Alex, hope you smash it.
Personally I would like to see him play this game as it might be an opportunity to compare him in the flesh with Huke, Fullah, Enslin, Rylah or Kedwell.
It is sort of possible to compare him with the memories of Docherty, Berry, Coventry and Anderson.
Please play Alex Gilbert tomorrow.
He’s never done 90 mins in a league game in his career yet.
However, attacking players are about impact, and if he can make things happen in 60 min / 30 min blocks, then that will be a positive addition.
