Alex Gilbert Signs on Loan From Middlesbrough

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert on loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level and is comfortable across the frontline, becomes the Addicks' first signing of the January transfer window.

Manager Nathan Jones commented: "I'm delighted to have him. We’ve been looking to add more quality in the final third and Alex provides that. He comes with decent pedigree having played in a very good Championship side this season, who trust us to further his development.

"We don’t really like taking players on loan, but when an opportunity comes up to add real quality, like this, we have to take it."

  • Who was it on here said the club should use the Inbetweeners clip?

    Welcome AG.
  • brilliant brilliant announcement on WhatsApp 😂
  • So this is an upgrade on Berry who can also play the TC role?
  • I need to trawl throught the transfer rumours thread because I've not heard of him. Is he decent? Has anybody seen him play more than once? Fingers crossed, obviously.

  • Welcome and good luck, Alex Gilbert.
  • Feels like the Boro version of Terry Taylor, with some quarters of their fanbase thinking he should be getting minutes in their team - not sent out on loan.

Our first signing of the window and can play across the frontline - it’ll be interesting to see if he ends up competing more with Berry or mainly with TC.

Amazing, 23 years old reaching his prime , plenty of energy left having amassed 70 minutes of Championship football in 7 substitute appearances and a total of 27 league appearances .
We mean business and it's all systems to go on the promotion train .
He's quality and will improve us no doubt
well then, he must be injured! or about to be.

Think he’s definitely competition for Berry more than anything else. Maybe he’s used a second striker behind Miles in those tricky away games…
  • No idea about this guy but if NJ thinks he adds quality then full systems go. Welcome Alex strut your stuff

  • Welcome Alex! Looks to be a solid signing and good to have an AM in the house.
Just got to hope he can do a job for us and we push on.
Midfield 3 of Cov, Doc & Gilbert.....not too shabby!!
  • Time will tell if he's a Gallagher or a Fiorini. Can't say I'm that impressed, he's 23 with less than 20 appearances under his belt. Is he a significant improvement on what we already have?

Saying that, welcome Alex, hope you smash it.
  • Tomorrow evening we are slated to play an U21 cup game against Stockport County at Dartford.
Personally I would like to see him play this game as it might be an opportunity to compare him in the flesh with Huke, Fullah, Enslin, Rylah or Kedwell.
It is sort of possible to compare him with the memories of Docherty, Berry, Coventry and Anderson.
    Please play Alex Gilbert tomorrow.

All sounds great, wonder how long it will be before he gets "Charltonized"...

    Welcome AG.
We could have announced him on Friday, but it's taken  all weekend to find the right clip.
