Summer 24 Transfer window verdict.

As we near the end of the mid season window, how do we reflect on the last summer recruitment?  For me, pretty much a load of mince. Docherty (eventually) and Edwards aside it’s been a bunch of flops.  The ex-Luton boys club have come and gone (Campbell, Hylton, Potts) or underwhelmed (Berry).  Mannion can’t displace AMB which is comment enough. Ahadme - cmon folks, despite the recent PR, we all know it’s not gonna happen. I’m discounting Small and Ramsay who have undoubtedly been excellent additions as they were here before. Thoughts?

Comments

  • Edwards , Godden, Alex Mitchell and Docherty (after a very ropey start) I'd count as successful. Rest have been middling to bad, Berry has been very disappointing especially.

    5/10?

    .
  • Docherty successful?
I’m not seeing it, but I hope he bestrides success like a captain for the remaining 40% or so of the season.

  • Exceeded expectations: Edwards, Godden
    Met expectations: Mitchell
slightly below expectations: Docherty and Berry
    well below expectations:  Ahadme, Campbell
did they even really play? Potts and Hylton
  • I'd say unsuccessful.

Gassan: 2/10. Completely useless so far, and we will do well to flog him. 2 might genuinely be generous.

Docherty: 5/10. Starting to look very decent, but was useless for a while. Not the player we thought we were getting, but showing glimpses now.

Berry: 5/10. Again anything less feels harsh, but he hasn't made the impact I'd expected, doesn't offer enough.

Edwards: 9/10. Fantastic business. Bargain and one of our best players.

Mitchell: 7/10. Room to grow, but one of the better CBs we have had in years.

Mannion: 3/10. Couldn't even take AMBs spot who I still feel needs replacing.

    Allan: 0/10. No comment.

    Hylton: 0/10. No comment.

    Potts: 0/10. No comment.

Godden: 6/10. Done well when he's played, not seen enough, similar to Berry.

Dixon I won't include as he feels one for the future.

So out of a possible 100, I've given 37 marks. I genuinely think this is generous.

I'll round it and say 4/10 so far. Could fluctuate.
  • My bad. Forgot A Mitchell and Godden. Both 6/10 for me.
  • Can't believe we never got Neymar in. Out of contract and injured, prime Charlton target.

    Scott out
  • mitchell started well but has become a bit of a libility lately ,do like his passion though and hope its just a blip and improves but he wont get any faster
  • 4/10 overall.  Must do better if it was a school reporr.
  • Potts, Campbell and Hylton all pretty hopeless waste of wages, but thankfully short contracts.

Ahadme a dud who we are stuck with for another 3.5yrs. Need to try to move him on asap.

Mannion not as good as AMB when we really needed a Number 1.  Not good enough from what I have seen so far.

Berry disappointing, personally think we need better in the 11. Decent squad player but I suspect his wages are more than that.

Docherty very decent now he is playing where he always should have.  Good signing, helps make us stronger defensively.

Mitchell very decent, solid signing.  a great character and young enough to push on.

Godden better than I thought.  A true goalscorer. Maybe doesn't get involved enough but if he scores that is fine

Edwards: best summer signing.  Young, strong, fast, good throw, proper player.  Should play at a higher level soon.

Dixon looks very promising but one for the future.

All in, I would say a slightly better than average window. 5 duds, 4 successes, one ok and one kid.  I said in the summer that normal was for about 50% of a clubs signings to be a success.  To really do well this year we needed the 3-4 "cherries" / stand out players.  Often they have been the loanees like JRS, Gallagher, Cullen and Bielik but we refused to go down that route.

And somehow the team formed from them is out performing the team of last season!

Not a strong endorsement I know but some of critical ratings would make me think we’ve got backwards or stagnated.

10 more points and we’ll have already equalled last year’s tally.

Then you obviously haven’t seen him play the last couple of months .

A much better manager has got an average bunch of players playing much better than last season

Compare our form this season to Jones' start with last year's players.  There is virtually nothing in jt.

So losing CBT, May and Dobson was tough.  I'll give the side overall 6/10 BUT Small and Ramsey are the difference makers - you're forgetting that too.

    The summer signings 5/10.

    Potts, Campbell;.Hylton - atrocious.
    Ahadme - very poor.

We've been much better since he hasn't started games/been injured.

Also remember Leaburn is back.  That's another reason we are better too.

You seriously cannot think Potta; Hylton, Campbell and Ahadme are/were (first 3 are gone/unsigned) have been good signings to date?!

    Jeez.

  • Jones has had 2 windows, the first one a rushed one. It all has to be taken into context, and overall I think it’s been very positive, you can’t expect every transfer to work. 7/10
  • 7 out of 10 for me . Ahadme being the biggest disappointment.
