I like them. Not overly keen on stewed. Dont like the jelly at all, and can do a pretty good job on removing that prior to eating. Used to go to micks eels in Canning Town and buy bowlfuls. Come in different grades dependant on thickness. used to catch them by the bagful down the Thames off the old jetties between the A&H and barrier. Smoked eels are very nice.
could you ask for boiled eels? have them before they cool into jelly.
This thread reminds me of the fish shop that was in The Broadway, Bexleyheath when I was a child. It had a large tank of eels swimming around. It used to fascinate me, but I could never have eaten them.
Did you ever see the fishmonger hoik one out for a purchaser and despatch it? 🤢

Went to the anchor & hope pre match a couple of summers ago - not my usual pre match haunt, but there was a train strike so we'd got the bus to Charlton. They had a seafood van outside, not sure if they still do that? And my brother order a few bits including jellied eels. Id only had them once before in my teens and remember the being fucking rank! He persuaded me to take a chunk but I was a little uncertain cause I knew about the spine hidden inside! "How do I eat this?". Woman behind the jump, "stick it yer mouth and suck it" hahaha! Errr...they was just as revolting as I remember! Never again...

Still had the seafood van all last summer, not been down there for a while

Good to hear! The rest of the stuff on offer was great...jellied eels are not for me though clearly ha!
When I was really young I ate about 15 crabsticks consecutively from Folkestone. After the after taste kicked in I really regretted it and felt sick all day.
Then I ended up projectile vomiting a proper mud looking substance and ruined my bed and carpet. Uncle had to come over and take me hospital where I had to end up staying a couple of nights. Can't really remember why but I know I was in a bad way.
That pretty much ended my curiosity with anything from the sea.
As for Pie and Mash, what's the issue? It's absolutely lovely. I love that Goddards in Greenwich. Been there a few times before a game, does the trick. Better than that half time toot served up at the Valley.
Was expecting lots of glowing praise for this exquisite delicacy so amazed at the response from so many.
Feel like I’ve always eaten them so must have tried them at Manzes in Greenwich when a kid where we went a lot.
Sainsburys sometimes stock them and some rare fish mongers have them occasionally. I buy them whenever I see them. Have a fish monger locally that gets fresh eels in occasionally and I jelly them myself as a treat and freeze them.
Can understand why they are an acquired taste but if you acquire it there’s no fish sweeter and tastier floating in a velvety melting jelly of vinegar and white pepper mopped up with chunks of crusty bread.

Yes, in Pitsea market in the 1970s. Awful experience (both Pistea Market in general and seeing those beautiful creatures get decapitated).
Remember going on the bus to the fishmongers in Welling with my dear old Nan, they had a dustbin filled with water with the eels swimming around, used to pick one or two out. The fishmonger would catch them in a net, stick them in a carrier bag and we'd get the bus back to Nans in Kidbrook with the things wriggling around trying to get out of the bag. Remember Nan chopping their heads off and boiling them up for Grandad,he loved them🤮
Absolutely love them. Definitely a generational food, anyone under 40 will more than likely find jellied eels disgusting, they'd rather have a trendy sushi dish. Was bought up on seafood, winkles, cockles, whelks, jellied and stewed eels. Never liked the leather jacket pies and lumpy mash until I was introduced to Millers in Belvedere Village a few years ago, I think they deserve a Michelin star 😂
