I left before the end so missed all the excitement. I have come to hate the modern way of playing, possession from the keeper to the defenders and so on and back with nothing to show for it. The problem as I see it, we do not have the ability to do that style effectively, we lose the ball easily. I know the reason for this style but seriously it’s boring the life out of me. Today we played a team that I think will go down, surely we can be a little more direct and aggressive. Absolute turgid game.
we have some strange fans. It’s league one not the champions league. Played well enough in my eyes. Patient build up, won lots of loose balls, showed endeavour and tenacity and finally got what we deserved. They had one chance and fluffed it. Many complaints about resorting to long ball tactics towards the end but every team does that in desperation and why not when you have a battering ram like Chuks.
Rather than revel in the joy of a well deserved last minute winner some would rather focus on what was lacking or even more bizarrely moan about the fucking floodlights!! 5 wins and a draw in our last 7 games and we’re heading in the right direction. Enjoy the ride! I certainly will as it’s a far cry from the despair of wondering if we would even have a club to support in future
well if the three people in front of me were anything to go by it was tedious, they were playing games on their phones for almost the entire second half, and I was bored enough to notice.

Tbf that used to happen when we were in the Prem. Father and two adult sons in front of me in the north upper, spent most of their time on their mobiles or talking about soaps on the tv. Used to do my nut in.
Can't believe how many circa 6's Docherty is getting in the ratings, I thought he worked bloody hard, made some decent runs, defended well and some nice passes. He was doing his and Berry's job and should have scored, but still.
We are in Div 3 So - unless we had the crazy spending by Brum - that’s the level of players we will have Save for a high quality academy player coming through (or more) Shrews are facing the drop They have Ainsworth as manager = awful football Today was never going to be ‘the beautiful game’ Shrews were never going to allow that Because we have Div 3 players as well, albeit better than theirs We played well today, but it only goes so far If a team come to The Valley with their mentality today, it’s not gonna be pretty
BUT the most important thing of all is that we kept on going, kept on trying, kept on running - it became desperate long ball tosh as the game reached the latter stages, but we tried, and tried, and tried - and guess what, we got a last minute winner
I am in no way comparing this to Curb’s teams - BUT something that has been missing for a few years now is effort and never giving up - Curb’s teams had that ethic - perhaps we are seeing the green shoots of ‘never give up’ - and IMO to get out of this horrible division, you need a huge dose of that in your team
Would an Appleton (sorry for mentioning him) Charlton side put that much effort in, even with 2 mins to go
Yaya Toure in the lounge today . sat a few seats behind me kids got a pic with him he jumped up and celebrated when we scored apparently and then sat down quickly
we are shit and lucky
Eieieio
fish and chips from Vintage on order at my sisters , that’s what I come southside for cos this third division shit is horrific
but you can’t beat a last minute winner , scenes , limbs , cuddling randoms (well if anyone’s near you )
what a day
New Midfielder...? 😱
Nope. He's heading up a new consortium that wants to buy the club.
Possibly.
Am sure @aliwibble will be delighted if there is a new Takeover thread started
Not my problem mate, I only do bitesize threads for intra-ownership conflicts. Get back to me when Gavin Carter goes on a drunken rant on Instagram, calling Charlie Methven a pink trousered public school twat or something.

Agreed. He is a completely different player now compared to a few weeks ago. Had a good game again today and does a lot of work which seems to go unnoticed. Exactly as you said. I don't think his chance was as easy as some are saying.

Thought Berry was really industrious doing more than I'd seen before. Theni realised I was watching Docherty. In my defence, I lost a contact lens about a week ago and it's decades since I've watched a match wearing glasses and at distance my sight doesn't quite align through glasses.
Is this side starting to get that winning habit, the football has changed from the start of the season, without being fantastic, we seem to be doing enough at the moment, and in touching distance doing in the an important 6 weeks.. do we start believe. Credit to jones turned it around.. didn’t take a lot to be honest, don’t just lump the ball, we have some half decent footballers.
Terribly boring game but a very nice end. Shrewsbury had their chance to win it....missed it and were punished. Despite their defensive discipline and a sound game-plan, that looked like a relegation result for them.
For us, it's a win. Maybe it will kick-start a play-off drive but nobody can be convinced after a totally muted offensive display. A simple man-marking job rendered us impotent for 99% of the game. Let's hope future oppositions will be less disciplined.
It looked an easy match until you note that they have not lost since mid December. Also that they have beaten Birmingham this season and beat Wrexham in their last game. Sometimes the results are more important than anything else and whilst we may not have found the play to elavate us, maybe we could be on the road to. Especially with a decent signing.
A purgatorial game, albeit redeemed by Thierry Small’s winner at the death - all the sweeter for the Salop having missed an open goal a minute or so earlier.
Ainsworth’s tactics were clear from the outset - get men behind the ball, don’t waste energy pressing high and, above all, keep your defensive shape. They came for a point and so very nearly achieved it with a highly disciplined defensive performance.
Charlton’s response to this hardly revolutionary tactic was, to put it mildly, uninspired. With the honourable exception of Tyreece Campbell, there was a lack of imagination and movement, with lots of balls played sideways and backwards, thereby ensuring that our opponents were completely in shape and in position before we attempted to threaten their goal. None of our midfielders appear capable of receiving the ball on the half turn and driving at the opposition. We are far too pedestrian in the middle of the park. Lloyd Jones put in a couple of very good diagonal balls in the first half but that was about it, save for Campbell’s trickery and improvisation and one excellent run from Small which took him past two defenders, only to blaze the ball over from well inside the box.
We attempted to up the tempo in the second half and had a few good spells, although we ultimately decided to go long following the introduction of Chuks and Godden in an attempt to make the breakthrough. In fairness, Chuks and Edwards, who pushed further forward, put some headers into the danger area, although it looked for all the world that the game was petering out. In injury time, Shrewsbury contrived to miss an open goal (with their guy kicking the ball against his standing foot) and Thierry then popped up with the timeliest of late, late winners.
A very important three points although the lack of creativity and movement in midfield was stark and I fear that is an issue which will ultimately cost us. On the plus side, we are now within striking distance of the top 6, it’s another clean sheet, great to see Kayne Ramsey back out on the pitch and the last minute winner sent everyone home happy. Let’s hope we can follow it up with another 3 points on Tuesday to really cement our position in the upper reaches of the table.

While I wouldn't suggest he had a great game (not sure anyone did, even if Thierry well deserves his MoM) I'm a bit surprised by the negative assessment of Miles Leaburn by quite a few. Everybody seems to have forgotten that our best effort in 95 minutes was his precisely directed header, direct from a corner, which drew a very good save from their keeper. Watch the replays of it, if you can.
It was a great header but one header doesn’t make a good performance. He lost the physical battle with CB’s and that happens sometimes. He’s a young player who is still learning, it’s ok to say he had a bad game
Yes, that assessment is reasonable, but the strange thing was that people are criticising him AND saying that we didn't have any decent efforts before the goal. I found that a bit odd, and worth reminding people of.
I do agree with @Exiled_Addick that he looks a bit leggy and could do with a rest. It's a long way back from such a long injury (people forget that too), but NJ clearly doesn't trust any other available striking combo. Speaking of which, if Ahadme was injured by Tyreece in training, how come his name wasn't on the whiteboard "injuries" section on proud display at Sparrows on Thursday night's video?

I do not know what people were watching in the first half. I reckon we had two attempts on goal and Shrewsbury none in that half.
Got to add as well, I genuinely think we won because Nsiala came off. He was very good for them today. Leaburn was having a right hard time against him, and it's extremely rare a centre back gets the better of Chuks. Today Nsiala did.
As soon as he came off I said to Fred our chances of scoring have gone up drastically.
He was class in that 2017/18 season for Shrewsbury. Fair play to him for turning back the clock (similar to Omar Beckles for Orient)
Credit to Gillesphey as well. Quietly becoming a bit of a consistent player for us. Nothing special but doesn't do too much wrong.
Lloyd Jones and Thierry the stand outs, Thierry with the nod for the goal.
Was also really impressed by Edwards again. Some diabolical crossing, but his engine is fantastic, and he's a very reliable player. Best left back since Wiggins for me.

We didn’t create a ton, but there was that one piece of magic wing play and excellent cross from TC that just needed a touch from 4 yards out to get a tap in but it some how just alluded everyone. That was a bit unlucky as it want like we lacked bodies in the box on that occasion.
They tried to do exactly what NJ did with us last season, avoid defeat first then maybe try and nick something at the end which they really should have done, though if you don't take your chance etc. Think that will do Thierry the World of good realising you don't have to be twinkletoes all of the time and although I've no idea how players will have emerged from the game physically, a few of those that finished the game today could be possible starters on Tuesday. In the meantime, let's enjoy a bit of lu..Nice win

Love a last minute winner 😎
I initially thought it was a lucky deflection, but after watching it maybe 100 times, I am certain it was fully intentional.
