Prince Harry settles legal claim against Sun publisher

The Duke of Sussex has settled his high court legal action at the eleventh hour against News Group Newspapers.

NGN offered "a full and unequivocal apology" to Prince Harry "for the phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators instructed by them" at the News of the World. It will also pay "substantial damages" as the two sides settled their legal claim, Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, has told the high court.

The Sun, Mail, Express etc, must be nearing the end of their time. I cant remember the last time I bought a paper, I cant ever recall buying the Sun and I don't know anyone who buys a paper anymore. Sad to see people lose their jobs but when they finally pack up I won't be too disappointed.
I'm happy Harry boy has scored a victory over that poisonous rag, I don't follow what royals do or don't do and I don't know the ins and outs of his gripe but all the same I'm pleased for him.
have Harry/Megan sued the Daily/Sunday Mail yet, they were the most poisonous and I certainly wouldnt mind if they went to the wall.

Yes, there's him and some others (Elton John, Liz Hurley are the ones i remember) suing the Mail and it's due to go to trial in 2026.
  • It's okay, the new media moguls that own social media won't do even worse damage than the newspaper tycoons...

they will definitely fill their boots there, I will imagine that they will try and settle that one before court.

I think Harry has a bigger problem now Trump is in office, regarding his immigration papers on entry to the US which Bidon refused to be made public. Megan has stated in the past that they would leave the US if Trump was elected, like a lot of other Luvies, I bet they don't'.

The Mail will almost certainly try to settle. Their publisher has already tried to get the case thrown out but failed.

With the Sun, Harry had said he was perfectly happy to take his case to trial to publicly expose them, so i'm sure he'd be happy to do the same with the Mail, who of course won't want that. I'd be amazed if they let it go to trial, so i'm sure they will also settle and apologise.

I don't think that's the case.  If Harry had been offered less in damages after a successful court case than NGN were offering before the case, he'd be liable for both parties' costs, which would have been punitive.  (For what it's worth, I think that's a ridiculous state of affairs).

I think, for Harry, it was more about the form of words that NGN had to come up with, and their admissions of guilt, that made him choose to accept whatever figure it was.

I was hoping that it would go to court, because, frankly, who doesn't like seeing journalists' dirty laundry being aired?
He would only have been liable for NGN’s costs, from the time the part 36 offer had been made and then rejected. Not costs incurred before. Big financial difference.

Yes, you're absolutely right.  Nevertheless, I imagine it would be a pretty significant sum.  NGN don't hire cheap lawyers!

But post-offer costs would include the hearing itself which with brief fees etc will be very, very expensive - certainly 7 figures in a case lke this.

  • People will change their tune when they find out Charlie Methven has Harry lined up as our new high profile co-owner, Wrexham style.

If you thought the half and half Wrexham scarves were bad you are going to hate what's coming.

And "Prince Harry's Charlton Athletic" is going to really grate.

I don't know about the others, but the Mail's website gets a lot of traffic.
