my late father was a Man Utd fan and Law was probably his favourite player

a myth that he relegated United. They would have gone down regardless of his goal

RIP Denis. I saw him play a few times in the 60s and he really was a brilliant goalscorer. Not the tallest but a great header of the ball.
I was at an event in London about 20 years ago and the after dinner speakers were Denis Law and Pat Crerand. When the Q&A got going, all the questions were directed at Denis Law. I hopefully put my hand up and the MC finally pointed to me and said “your question please”, and I said I’ve got a question for Pat. “About time” said the MC, “What’s your question?”
I just asked Pat if he could elaborate a bit on Denis’s disciplinary record. Pat beamed and did 10 minutes, with the great man sitting quietly, smiling and squirming.
  • The most exciting player I have ever seen. His connection with the supporters was unreal. Went to Old Trafford in November 1971 v Spurs. The King scored two. Shall never forget after the second goad, he knelt to tie his lace and the entire Stretford End began bowing to him in adoration.
