Just reading up about him and while I remembered he came into the pro game late I didn't know he was 30 when he signed for Plymouth (he doctored his birth certificate on the advice of Plymouth manager Malcolm Allison to make it look like he was "only" 28.

He was 32 when he joined Man City and still won the league, FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners' Cup.

  • Came into the professional game aged 30, and then made over 300 appearances winning the League, FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield, European Cup Winners Cup.

    A great story. RIP

I didn’t know that, he was a model professional.

Also won  Player of the year with Dave Mackay of Derby County about 1970 sharing the award together.

    RIP. Tony Book
  • He was captain for City in the first match I ever remember seeing v Leicester City in FA Cup IN COLOUR!

  • Good full back and excellent captain.  RIP
  • I don't remember him as a player, but I always seemed to have loads of Pannini stickers of him when he was managing Man City. RIP.
  • Fine player I remember because of the rarity of a player of his mature (in footballing terms) years becoming a full time professional back in the fifties and sixties.

An injured Len Glover was up against him in the 1969 FA Cup final and was unable to do much as I recall.

    RIP Tony.
