David Lodge, the writer mainly known for his comic novels, often set in Academia, died on New Year's Day aged 89. David was a Charlton fan from his youth and his novels often contained references to Charlton.
RIP. Never read any of his books in full but would regularly comb through them for the naughty bits when I was an adolescent. Didn't know he was Charlton - might have to give one a proper go!
Timothy Young, the protagonist in Out of the Shelter, a 1970 novel by David Lodge, supports Charlton Athletic. The book describes Timothy listening to Charlton's victory in the 1947 FA Cup Final on the radio.[111]

RIP David.
That book is directly autobiographical, as he states in a section at the end
Sadly, I think he regarded being a Charlton fan like others would view trainspotting or the Scouts - an enjoyable activity during adolescence but something you grow out of quite abruptly. I'm not sure he visited The Valley as adult!
But a decent writer and supporter of disability rights, driven by having a son with Down's Syndrome himself.
