Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers
Sunday 29th December 2024 - 12:30pm Kick-Off (Live on SkySports+)

Introduction
Charlton's current form could be described at present as a "flash in the pan", either that, or you'd compare us to London buses... Its been a rough Autumn for the Addicks, and we fell away from the top six at a rate that had more than a few glancing nervously over shoulders - Such is the random nature of League One though, and suddenly two buses, I mean wins, come along at once. There is a chance to replicate our start to the season, and so record three wins on the trot... It'll be our hardest test of late... But Charlton in typical fashion, usually seem up to that type of task.

The Opposition
Name: Wycombe Wanderers (2nd) - Manager: Matt Bloomfield
Ground: Adams Park
Previous League Result: Stevenage 0-3 Wycombe

Standing in our way are a side who aren't actually league leaders, but are the surprise package for the 2024/25 season: Wycombe Wanderers

Its probably fair to say that under Matt Bloomfield they've shown no previous potential to go on a run of form, similar to the one that they're on. Our 1-0 defeat at Adams Park at the end of last season, certainly showed no signs of a opponent that would become promotion challengers in just a handful of months, showing that fortunes can change at the drop of a hat outside of the Premier League... This will be Bloomfield's second full campaign in charge with the The Chairboys finishing 9th and 10th in their last two seasons.

To say that Wycombe come to the Valley as a team in form is a heavy understatement though, they lost the first two games of the season with both games ending 3-2 against Wrexham and Birmingham respectfully... But since then, they've gone undefeated, with just three games on the road ending in stalemate, each of those games (at Blackpool, Barnsley and Exeter) all remarkably ending in a 2-2 scoreline.

The danger man is Richard Kone... and I'm sure a few months ago the question would have been... Who? - But their new front man currently has nine league goals from 16-league outings - Its unsurprisingly that Kone is unknown; the Striker was picked up having spent the last five seasons from Athletic Newham, who currently find themselves in the Essex Senior League, scoring an impressive 88-goals in 108-appearances... Whoever scouted him should be very proud!!

Charlton Team News
Is it at all surprising that our form has slightly returned along with the returning Lloyd Jones at the heart of defence, since he started a game following his injury, we've failed to concede a single goal... Now you've gone and done it... Instead though its our attack that has seemingly bloomed from absolutely no where, with Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn on a combined four goals from their last two matches.

Elsewhere and it was potentially telling that Nathan Jones was loath to make any early substitutes on Boxing Day, it worked in our favour on that occasion, but its a sign that we could well see changes amongst the starting eleven, and bench this coming Sunday... It would make sense of course, given we've another League fixture just three days later, all part and parcel of the Christmas fixture list really!! - One of the highlights of any Footballing calendar.

Maynard-Brewer
A.Mitchell - Jones - Gillesphey
Edmonds-Green - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Anderson
Godden - Ahadme

Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Small - Berry - A.Campbell - Kanu - T.Campbell - Leaburn

  • Interesting to see what the line up will look like. Chuks back on the bench? Taylor out of favour again? A Campbell still getting on the bench? Win tomorrow could be pivotal. Wycombe seem pretty decent so a proper test this one. 1-1.
  • Agree with Berry on the bench as he's not impressing me of late.

But concerned with the limitations of the 2 starting strikers....

If Miles & Tyreece had been subbed earlier on Thursday, they might have been sufficiently rested to play a bigger part v Wycombe.

Hopefully I'm wrong...wouldn't be the first time.

I also think Berry will be rested, but he genuinely could have had a hatrick vs Cambridge, he looks the most likely to score out of everyone when he has the ball.

That line-up though is piss poor and more or less exactly what I expect.

REG, Gillesphey, Anderson, Godden, Gassan and arguably both keepers shouldn't be anywhere near a Charlton starting XI. Still not sure on Docherty.

Small has to stay in the team for me as one of the better peformers last game.

I was optimistic about a 3-2 win, but after looking at the reality of that team again, just don't see it. Hope we can get a draw but think Wycombe will win 2-1, especially if that's the team.
  • I think your line up is close to what I was thinking, although I think Kanu will start ahead of Godden. I think Jones is going to try and mirror our victory over Birmingham with the pace to return again for the Crawley game.
  • Think it will be unchanged, mid 3 gave been
excellent, dont weaken it by bringing Anderson back in who offers very little.. Any changes will
    be made v Crawley

Small was poor v Cambridge he has no final ball.. Doc been MOM last two games….

  • 2-1, with fingers crossed. COYR.

    Ugly 1-0 home win.

Edit - which would put us level on points and games played with Barnsley currently in 7th, and above them on goal difference.

I think NJ will see Crawley as the game where we should pick up all three points so will be saving TC and Leaburn for that game. Wycombe is a far, far tougher test and you could say even a point is a bonus. Of course he could rest them, we pick up a point tomorrow and then lose to Crawley but that’s why he’s paid to make such decisions, if that is the decision he actually makes. But if he starts TC and Leaburn tomorrow I’d expect them to be on the bench on Wednesday.
  • I'd take a draw to be honest just to keep the unbeaten run going but we are capable , on recent form of winning.

    I'm going for a Desmond.

    2-2   ( Leaburn & Docherty)
  • It's Charlton ain't it?

We'll probably tear them a new one.

    However...

I think he'll revert to a single striker up front, probably Godden, putting lots of emphasis on not conceding.  TC and Leaburn kept ready on the bench if we go behind and don't look like scoring.  Not sure who'll go into the mix in the remaining spot.  Maybe Taylor?

Edit: based on the same line up as last time
  • I've predicted the last 2 wins so now going for the hat trick.

3-1.  And the chairboys (hate that name) become the whipping boys.

Sorry to be pedantic but they're second, Alfie May's Brum are top.

Other than that, good preview 😀

Wycombe score a lot of goals, only failing to score once this season - a week ago against Bolton. We are the only opponent that Birmingham have failed to score against this season.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Nathan Jones try a starting eleven that closely matches the line up from that day.

Godden, Kanu, Anderson, Allan Campbell all possible starters in place of Tyreece, Leaburn, Berry and Small IMO.

I wouldn’t make all of those changes personally but won’t be surprised if that’s what we see
  • Wycombe have done so well this season, especially away from home. Can we keep the momentum? Perhaps, 1-1, a late equaliser to ruin their time wasting.

2nd home game i cant make this week due to travel disruption from where i live and the fact i am on 12 hr nights. If i can keep my eyes open to watch on stream i cant see anything else but a miserable 0-2 defeat. This is based on the second half performance the other day.

I hope the crowd get behind the team. You could hear every player and manger shout on Thursday.
  • Wycombe have the best away form in the league, 27 points from 12 games, this being their 13th already means they have 14 home games to play in 2025. You’d expect them to continue their position and end up being promoted.

It’s going to be a really tough test. I actually think it’s the hardest game of the season so far. Everyone will look at Birmingham, and rightly so, but we knew what to expect with them and everyone was up for it from the outset. Wycombe can do both sides of the game, play good attacking football and play ugly and slow the game down. Birmingham had the hype of May and Stansfield but Kone at Wycombe is quick and strong and will pose a different test to our defence.

I really hope we don’t see many changes, it’ll disrupt the flow of the team and make the crowd nervous. I do expect Berry and Leaburn to come out the team though. Berry won’t be able to start and impact a game in such short time and it would be negligible to start Leaburn after how long he was out. The other change we might see is Coventry with Taylor coming in. He covers a lot of ground and fresh legs in that part of the pitch could be needed too. Otherwise, I hope that we don’t see many/any more.

    • Charlton Athletic have won just one of their last six league games against Wycombe Wanderers (D2 L3), though that sole win did come in this exact fixture last season (3-1).
    • Wycombe Wanderers have won just one of their six away league games against Charlton Athletic (D1 L4), conceding exactly three goals in three of those matches.
    • Charlton have failed to win any of their last 17 final league games of the year (D8 L9) since a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa in the Premier League in 2006.
    • Wycombe have won just one of their last seven final league games of the year (D1 L5), with the exception coming in a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City in 2020.

I’d be surprised if they do continue with their first half run of form. They’ve been a surprise package and they’ve overachieved. That’s going to mean they have a manager and players that will have been attracting attention. They are a small club, surviving the transfer window intact is going to be a challenge.

Surprising (and damning) stat that sums up the last (nearly) 20 years.  Game has draw written all over it.

    • Charlton have failed to win any of their last 17 final league games of the year (D8 L9) since a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa in the Premier League in 2006.

I’d be less comfortable if the run of last league game form was that we’d won all of them. Runs of form, good and bad, come to an end, as will this one, today. One of the dynamic duo to score again. Jones to add a second from a corner.
  • No thanks to the one goal “Gas man”.  Kanu and TC up front if Leaburn can’t

Who put Birmingham there, the bastards!! - That'll teach me, I usually double check the League table once I've done looking at a teams current season on Wiki, as isn't the first time that its not been updated properly... First time I've been caught out though!!

    (Thanks for the spot)
