Charlie Boy talking

  • He should work up a ten minute stand up routine and perform it at half time like Stan Boardman once did when we played up at Anfield.

’What’s the difference between Oxford United and Charlton Athletic? One pays me in memories, the other pays me in cash’.

Incidentally was there any word on who the new club Secretary will be following Dangerfield in order to allow Chris Parkes his well earned retirement?
Maybe Methven could save the club money by doing that job himself.

People moaned that he hadn't said anything and now people are moaning that he has. Cant win can he? Some people have made their minds up (some based on where he went to school) and that's that.

    Merry Christmas.
That’s not quite true, I don’t give a monkeys what school he went to, or what coloured trousers he wears, although I think it’s a misconception that he always wears salmon trousers.

For me, it’s all about the pace of progress and improvement achieved, which at the moment, is no where near quick, or good enough.
I dont think anyone has said it's good enough, have they?

My point was that people were moaning about the silence, now people are moaning hes said something. Cant have it both ways.

Extending Lloyd Jones’ contract should be the number 1 priority in this window, although I’m not optimistic that we’ll achieve that with Scott et al at the wheel, particularly given our mid-table status. The big mistake was not negotiating an additional one-year option for the club when Lloyd signed from Cambridge, at a time when we were in a much stronger negotiating position.
    Maybe maybe not.

Given the overall inbalance of the squad and collective under par performance none are ‘critical’.

Yes potentially these are players to keep but as we were willing to let May and Dobson go who knows what NJ really wants the squad to look like.

  • Surely he mentioned beating Portsmouth in a pre season friendly?
    Justifies everything.

    Merry Christma

    Total rubbish.
People are simply judging him on how they see him running the club.
Perhaps last season finishing 16th in the table and this season not doing much better is why they are moaning.
That's clearly not my point, is it.

But hey, far from me to interupt the pile on.

I don’t think anyone (well hardly anyone) was moaning about any silence from him.

It doesn’t take long to work out that Charlie Boy is always right, and will always have a convincing or lengthy argument of why he is right.
    Of course they were!

Anyway, tis the season of goodwill, so fuck you lot!
    ;-)
  • I think there is a bit of an overreaction here. Charlie will never be the most popular character but some of the points he makes are valid. The quote regarding only having a pitch big enough for 22 is probably a bit ridiculous and certainly doesn't really need to be used to highlight a squad that with Laqeretabua now making appearances stands at 29, he also makes a point about one or two players need to be brought in, can't knock him there. I think overall he made points that we probably all agree with, Northampton, Birmingham and I will add Bolton to that list were pleasing on the eye and he correctly points to Bristol Rovers and Crawley as low points. It seems to me that Charlie was giving his personal opinion on the football side of the club and he has openly admitted elsewhere that the football side is not in his skill set, it's just his opinion.

Charlie, I have watched every minute of league and cup(s) football this season (either live or on stream), plus a lot of the academy.
It is virtually the same as last season but without the hope and joy of watching Alfie May and George Dobson, but with the astonishment of watching Gary Docherty (despite Saturday) and Gassan Ahadme.
I was also present at the ‘tribute’ to Kevin Nolan, were you?
    Gary Docherty 😬

Shiver me timbers, that fits the oil tanker analogy!
  • If it’s what he says moving on 4, 5 or more deadwood players and bringing in 2 or 3 good players all good as far as I am concerned. But my biggest concerns are firstly trusting the bloke, and secondly who will take on the deadwood players and would they voluntarily move on?
I think it's an interesting comment to mention the squad size needs bringing down - as mentioned you've got the likes of Potts, Campbell (A) and Hylton who you could extricate from the squad very very easily and at no cost if it is purely down to a question of not having enough space on the training pitch. A comment like that makes it really difficult to justify extending any deals with those 3 so if that happens (with really any of the 3 of them) then I would say questions need to be asked.  You would think getting a league 2 or one step lower loan deal for Asiimwe would not be difficult either so that brings the squad size down to 23 straight away. Edun might be a slightly harder sell but surely a L2 club would have a look at him even on loan.

In terms of the rest if it meant getting a quality creative and attacking minded player or two in their place then I wouldn't be against Anderson/REG/Taylor shipping out (or at a push a Kanu loan) which again I don't think would be a particularly hard task to accomplish, albeit I would be slightly disappointed to have to lose one or two of them - I could easily see some lower/mid league 1 teams happily picking up any of those four though.

What this squad size excuse can't be allowed or accepted as a reason for would be for losing Lloyd Jones, Coventry, Small or Leaburn IMO but my fear is that it will be and it is a legit concern that this is what we are being primed for here.
  • Maybe reducing the size of squad would help NJ who seems to have issues with knowing who to choose consistently.
  • At what point does the amount he's taking out of the club exceed the investment he made? Maybe one of his supporters can enlighten me.

The squad is clearly too big that’s pretty evident. CM talking as if he and his mates aren’t to blame is the problem
    Is it though?

In numerical terms any real difference to other seasons?

    The issue remains quality.
