MATCH PREVIEW: Northampton Town vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 21st December 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off

Northampton Town vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 21st December 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Ben Toner

Introduction
The time is nigh... its that time of the season where we get to the festive part of the season, football matches squeezed in over the Christmas period, meaning its not just presents, food and drink that we get to enjoy as we start to say goodbye to 2024 - For Charlton fans though, its like receiving coal as a child from good old St. Nick. Pleas of: "Make it stop... Make it go away" heard all over South East London and beyond... It'll never stop we're told... This is a life sentence!!

The Opposition
Name: Northampton Town (19th) - Manager: Ian Sampson (Caretaker)
Ground: Sixfields Stadium
Previous League Result: Rotherham 3-0 Northampton

First up as the prologue to the Christmas Fixture List is Northampton Town, who themselves come into this match without a Manager - Jon Brady, an old team mate of Jim Rodwell at Rushden & Diamonds, surprisingly resigned at the start of the month - His team were winless in six matches, although picked up three draws in the process. His (temporary) replacement; Ian Sampson played over four hundred times for the Cobblers, and beat Peterborough 2-1 in his very first game, it puts our opponents just two points ahead of the drop zone, as they look to avoid second season syndrome.

To be honest though, a repeat of last season was always going to be difficult for Jon Brady and his side - Promoted from League Two meant that the Cobblers returned to this level for the first time since X - Not once did they ever show signs of being in a relegation battle, and finished in a very respectful 14th, eight points ahead of the Addicks, although we can forgive them for that, seeing they did remove Michael Appleton for us, recording a late 3-2 win in the process... Meh... Everyone does it, dont be too proud Northampton.

This season, and things just havent really gotten going, they've failed to secure back to back wins, although have only suffered back to back defeats on three occasions, they've scored three more goals than us this season (Not difficult), whilst have conceded ten more than us; Cameron McGeehan is the man to watch out for, and is someone Nathan Jones will know well from their time at Luton Town - Cameron has six goals from Midfield, and is top scorer, whilst Tariqe Fosu (Remember him) has three to his name!!

Charlton Team News
I imagine if there is anything a Charlton fan is going to ask for this Christmas its a goal, any goal will do (Nope I'm not going to break into song) - We complained that we weren't scoring enough goals in the first half, so it seems that the powers that be at Sparrows Lane have taken the extreme measures to ensure that... No goals have been scored at all... Erm not the angle we were going with lads... With the Addicks failing to find the back of the net in our last three matches.

On the plus side, we've seen the return of Lloyd Jones to our defence, which has seen some organisation back in the side, and has understandably resulted in two clean sheets in our last two League games (something we only achieved once whilst he was out injured!!) - Elsewhere and we saw a return to having Matty Godden and Daniel Kanu up front against Mansfield last time out, so you'd hope that we continue with similar, given their movement; Kanu was also the last player who managed to find the net so it would make sense to drop him, especially with players heard muttering at the time: "Can we do that, is he allowed to do that" - Yes boys... Yes you can!!

  • Optimistic... sort of.
  • I just want to see a joined-up performance with everyone giving 100%.

We have forgotten how to win, so the best I can expect is a draw.

Cant see us scoring so, 0-0

    Happy Christmas all.
  • If we get a bit of good luck in the game we will win. If we get a bit of bad luck we will lose and neither and we will draw. That is what it has come to away to Northampton. I don't think we are capable of a performance that doesn' require luck but it is league one and most of the teams in it are well organised but no great shakes either. It is depressing we can count ourselves amongst those teams now.
    • Northampton Town have won just one of their last six league games against Charlton Athletic (D1 L4), conceding 15 goals in total during that time.
    • Charlton Athletic are unbeaten across their last three away league games against Northampton Town (W2 D1) and will be looking to make it four such matches without defeat for the first time in this fixture’s history.
    • Northampton are unbeaten across their last four home league games (W3 D1), keeping three clean sheets during that time.
    • Charlton have won just one of their last nine league games (D5 L3), failing to score more than one goal in any of their last six matches.

The odds on us drawing 0-0 must be better than even
  • Good luck to all those travelling for this one. I hope the boys can bring some much needed pre-Christmas cheer, but sadly doubt it. I think this could be another 0-0 bore draw. It is just so hard to be positive at the moment!
  • 1-1, just can't imagine us doing enough to win a game at the moment
  • Would everyone be happy if we see the best version of us? Or is the problem that that is not good enough.
  • 0-1 Not a happy Christmas for us.
  • 0-1 half time, 0-3 full time.

Yes I've been on the egg nog already
  • I'm gonna go with a narrow in for us. We haven't conceded, but could have in last weeks first half, for two league games and need to build on that, we actually got crosses in, second half, and that needs to happen again. I have a feeling the penny has finally dropped for Nathan Jones, his kept it tight and play down the middle is a failure, we need to stretch teams and if that's with Tyreece and Thierry both playing wide, so be it !

Maybe people can answer that when we see it.
  • I cannot see us win this, we just have no threat. Northampton will see this as a big chance for 3 pts and might cause us issues. 1-1, we are going nowhere.
  • Godden and Ahadne - the ultimate Xmas turkeys.
    Another 0-0.
  • I can’t see past us giving them a Christmas good hiding.
  • Saw a cobblers fan on twitter say 3-0 away win, so that's what I'm backing
  • Nil Nil Draw.

Followed by the Welsh warbler saying plenty of positives to take from the game  , another clean sheet blah blah blah
