Football officially broken23

FIFA rules say that a confederation can’t host two World Cups within three editions.
In the 2026 & 2030 editions, FIFA have covered North America, South America, Africa and Europe.
Leaving only Asian confederations available to bid.
There was some hope that maybe Australia & NZ might mount a serious bid but this process felt rigged from the get go so I’m not surprised they didn’t put a proper bid on the table.6 -
It's blatantly obvious that the process has been rigged. Such a corrupt, value-free organisation.20
-
Outrageous that they are counting 2030 as South America and Africa’s turn at hosting. Just so they can bring it back to oil money as quickly as possible24
-
Does that mean a winter World Cup in 2034?I wonder if they have an agreement to allow alcohol in certain areas?0
-
The only saving grace is that once they've had it, alongside Qatar, the list of places with oil money, in a position to host the world cup, is shorter. UAE will try, and maybe Bahrain and Kuwait, but they have even less places to build stadiums than Qatar did.0

More winter World Cups
More winter breaks
And some call it progress.0 -
I read a good piece at the weekend which stated, iirc, that the bidding process for 2034 was unexpectedly announced as being open for no longer than 28 days! Australia were considering getting involved but, wisely, decided not to even bother putting a preliminary bid package together, though Saudi's was fully formed and ready to go. Funny that.
Did they go ahead with their Opportunity Knocks "clapometer" approach to the "vote" in the end?0 -
To be fair, Saudi Arabia do have a World Cup pedigree. Now they’ve got a few quid, can’t say I’m too against it. The whole Portugal, Africa, South America things seems bit of a farce tho.2

I'm all for diversity and sharing but these choices are just plain wrong!
Saudi Arabia and human rights etc.
2030 is just a farce!1 -
Looking like 66, will be the only WC in the home of the game in my lifetime.2

Must be time for one in Antarctica soon10

I was in an EMEA "all hands" meeting at work on teams today which already makes me cringe.
The chair is from the Saudi office and she was saying how happy they are to have won the bid, I could barely contain myself from unmuting my mic and going into a long monologue about Saudi Arabia.
Absolutely disgraceful3 -

Give it a couple of decades and I'm sure The World Cup will be completely based in those middle-east nations that are desperate to throw money at big events.
Hosted by a nation that beheaded a western-based journalist for speaking out against them, fantastic news to those desperate to go and pretend how normal everything is over there.17 -
Loved the Qatar World Cup. Hopefully SA is the same.7

Sitting in doors watching 3-4 games indoors in the middle of winter wasn't so bad (Qatar), Even the Mrs didn't mind when it's cold/wet out....different story in the middle of summer so not that bothered if it's going to be another winter WC.1

Hilarious but people will lap it up rather than take a stand so expect the UAE to host one in the 2040s.
The Euros in Germany were so much better than the Qatar world cup.2 - Sponsored links:

Qatar was the most exciting tournament in a long time, and from a match going experience was absolutely brilliant. Found it to be more enjoyable than Germany personally, although both were great.I was actually at the Saudi Arabia v Argentina match, which had the best noise and atmosphere of any of the games I saw. Their team is regularly at the World Cup, so the regurgitated suggestion that it’s “not a proper football country” is wide of the mark IMO.I plan to be at every tournament for the foreseeable and will happily go to Saudi and judge the experience for myself rather than what we’re told by those sitting at home 👍8

We all know what the Saudi's are doing and we all know that FIFA is still a corrupt organisation.
But it seems nobody can, or will, do anything about it.
The world is getting hotter and some fucking idiots want to play football in the desert. Amazing. Truly amazing.14 -

If you can just sort me out tickets for a good stoning then I might be tempted.0 -

Ridiculous, building a whole new city, and putting a stadium on a tower block 1000ft up in the air- with everyone getting to the stadium in high speed lifts. Not sure how that fits in with FIFAs enviromental concept or emergency evacuation and fire safety, but it will mean ball boys getting a ball back will take a while.
