MATCH PREVIEW: Walsall vs Charlton Athletic (FACR2) | Saturday 30th November 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off

FA Cup - Second Round Proper
Walsall vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 30th November 2024 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Ollie Yates

Introduction
Typical isn't it... Just as we get three points in the League, on the road no less, and the League campaign throws up the handbrake once more, with proceedings paused for another clash in England's most historic competition: the FA Cup... Our last round encounter at Southend United, a 4-3 thriller requiring a winning goal from an unlikely source was a great way to advertise the tournament - Now just one game stands between forty clubs and a match that can turn into a huge financial windfall, yet one that come the end of this weekend, only twenty can take advantage of.

The Opposition
Name: Walsall - Manager: Mat Sadler
League: EFL League Two (2nd)
Previous Round: Walsall 2-1 Bolton

If you want to look for an cupset this 2nd Round, then I imagine you've potentially come to the right place - Walsall are flying in League Two at present, and sit just three points (albeit with a game in hand) off table topping: Port Vale... The Saddlers have already despatched Bolton Wanderers from this competition, winning 2-1 at the Bescot Stadium, whilst they've beaten Birmingham City on penalties in the EFL Trophy (a 0-0 draw), and narrowly lost to Leicester City on penalties in the League Cup, again another 0-0 draw.

Looking to lead the Saddlers back to the third tier of English Football for the first time since 2019 is the aptly named: Mat Sadler (where is Dave Addick when you need him!!); Sadler spent two spells as a Defender with Walsall in his playing career, before retiring at the club in 2022 - In April 2023 he was named Interim Manager after the departure of Michael Flynn, and a month later was given the job on a permanent basis, with the club having finished 16th and 11th in their last two League campaigns respectfully.

But its the FA Cup that should be the focus this weekend, the focus on Walsall as a League encounter will have to wait until next season - Keeping things simple and our opponents tomorrow have reached Round Three in each of the last two seasons; Charlton and Walsall have actually met in the FA Cup on three occasions, with the latter ending victorious twice, the last of those meetings came at the Valley in 2002; Walsall won 2-1 on that occasion - Charlton though are undefeated against the Saddlers since 2011, with six wins and three draws... However all current form points towards another giant-killing in the FA Cup this season.

Charlton Team News
Injuries are refusing to go away at the moment, with Zach Mitchell joining the Physio club at Sparrows Lane, its unfortunate for the youngster who was just starting to get some game time with the First Team, and will now miss the next ten weeks or so with a hamstring injury - In his place, surprisingly, in recent matches has been Fijian; Josh Laqeretabua with the youngster making his first League appearance for the club as a substitute on Tuesday night, and could well remain in the squad ahead of Nathan Asiimwe who was selected for the lesser; London Senior Cup in midweek.

One player who should at least appear on the bench from that 9-2 victory is Jamaican: Kaheim Dixon who scored four goals against Wingate & Finchley (I've always wanted to include them in a Match Preview), and with the option to have nine substitutes in FA Cup matches, should surely be involved on the bench at the very least this weekend. Other than that I suspect we'll see few changes this Saturday, as Nathan Jones looks to try and bring the "win by any means" mentality back amongst the main team.

Maynard-Brewer
Edmonds-Green - Mitchell - Gillesphey - Edwards
Coventry - Anderson - Taylor
Godden
T.Campbell - Leaburn

Substitutes Bench:  Reid - Laqeretabua - Small - Asiimwe - A.Campbell - Berry - Dixon - Hylton - Ahadme

Meh... Lazy journalism from that writer

Come on... Its the FA Cup, yet no mention of our three games against them in said competition ;)
  • Can I be bold and say, get rid of HYLTON and A CAMPBELL and put 2 in from the under 21s from the other night, and you never know we might get a glimpse of Dixon and Co on the hallowed turf of the Bescot👍

I'd definitely have Enslin over Allan Campbell at the moment - Imagine Mbick would be ahead of Hylton too given how he appeared on the bench ahead of him this season, only to get injured without playing for the First Team, think Casey is injured too isn't he?

I'd like to see Small for Edwards. Provides some extra threat, gives Small some game time and Edwards some rest. I'd also swap TC and Godden around in that formation.
I wouldnt mind seeing Small and Campbell flanking Leaburn, or even Ahadme in a proper 4-3-3 formation

Thats where I was originally going with my line up, but dont think Jones will change it all that much

Agree with Small over Edwards for this match though, just to give Thierry some game time at the very least

Would be a great time for Dixon to get a start, or at least a place on the bench and some game time, especially after his 4 goal U21 performance in the week...got to be a better bet than Hylton at least ffs...
  • Attack! TC must play, Dixon if we are behind for the last 20 mins.  Pace and invention.

I think it’s important we win on Saturday . I good third round tie could fund a player or two ,  plus winning breeds winning . Momentum as I said before .
Give Dixon a run out as well .
    2-2 we win on pens
  • I think it will depend on Walsall, if they rest players and make changes we will win, if they go full strength I can see us getting beat

They are flying at the moment and unbeaten in 8

Thierry has said himself he doesn’t like playing up the pitch but this place has decided he should be a winger all of a sudden. I think it’s probably just because of a lack of options but it’s not his game at all

He'd probably rather be in the team than not though and yes of course it's a lack of options, thanks to Jones.

I'm not sure that's the case. He spoke about finding a loan spell really tough because he was being played out of position
  • Who are the 2 or 3 mentioned that are either back or closer to being back?
  • Uncomfortable away win,  0-1. Leaburn with a short range header.
  • My business partners cousin is mat saddler and I've been told he's taking it seriously so expect a decent strength side from them.
  • Any win will do. Would be nice to get South London derby or a big team in the 3rd round

More chance of seeing Chuks play 90 minutes of football.
  • the bad news is that our potential upset is shown here on ESPN tomorrow, which means I don’t get the weekend off from this dross.  2-0 Walsall.

  • Pretty much as you were i think with injuries considered. I'd bring Asiimwe in and have Dixon in the 16.
  • I presume there’s no way of watching this? Thank God for that (other Deities are available)
  • Id start Asiimwe as think REG could do with a break. Would like to see Dixon and T.Campbell on the wings with a sole striker.

    Asiimwe    Mitchell    Gillesphey   Small

               Taylor       Coventry

As mentioned above, it looks to be on EPSN+ so you will have to suffer it with the rest of us I'm afraid.

Edit - just been informed I'm going to sparkle in the park apparently, normally I'd be annoyed but it'll probably be more fun.
