Burton Albion v Charlton Athletic
Tuesday 26th November 2024
Kick-Off: 19:45 - Live on Sky Sports

Referee
Elliot Bell - Previously officiated a Charlton match in our last game of last season, away at Wycombe Wanderers.

Introduction
As we come to the end of November, our season and any kind of hope once more is hanging on by a thread. 1 win in the last 9 league games, scoring 10 and conceding 14 is relegation form. Despite some character being shown and a few glorious chances being missed in Yorkshire on Saturday, the game was not helped when our captain was sent off minutes after we got ourselves level. Whether it should have been a red is a debate for another thread, but make no mistake, Tuesday night against bottom of the league Burton Albion is a must win game. Anything else and you can fully expect a meltdown and our season is well and truly over.

Opposition
Stadium: Pirelli Stadium
Manager: Tom Hounsell (caretaker)
Nickname(s): Brewers
Form: LLLDWL
Previous result: A 3-0 loss at home to Stockport County. Their line up was:

Crocombe
Bannon - Vancooten - Sweeney - Armer
Watt - Webster
 Goodwin-Malife - Bennett - Kalinauskas
Orsi

Burton sit bottom of the league with 1 win all season, that win came recently against fellow relegation strugglers Shrewsbury. Both teams have sacked their respective managers already and currently Burton, who were taken over by the Nordic Group in the summer and oversaw an incredible amount of squad overhaul, have a 29 year-old caretaker in charge. Not only would it be another low in our recent history failing to win against bottom of the league when expectations at the start of the season were greater than we currently are at, but if Jones who has a wealth of experience in the EFL gets outdone by a rookie caretaker, it will be pushing time where serious questions need to be asked.

This Burton team are not League One quality. Sure, they have a couple of decent players who would get into other teams, one of them being Elliot Watt. The deep lying midfielder was signed from Salford and not only is he seen as a bit of a set-piece specialist, he's extremely comfortable on the ball - something Burton were trying to implement this season following the appointment of Mark Robinson from Chelsea's U21. But let's be honest, it shouldn't matter who is in the opposition team when they're sitting bottom of the league, this is a game we simply have to win. One player we do know about is Harry Isted. The keeper moved in the summer after being told he would not be first choice and wanted to play games. Fair enough, he wasn't good enough for us so it was best for all parties. But the move has not gone to plan, Isted is second choice.

Charlton Team News
Injuries, injuries, injuries. To be honest, it seems to be all I have heard about over the last 4-5 weeks. Don't get me wrong, injuries are an issue and are hurting us, as they have done every season for who knows how long. It doesn't matter anymore though because the players on the pitch are good enough to get results, and they need to be standing up and making sure their being counted on. It was positive to have TC back on Saturday and I thought he made an impact coming on from the bench. This unbalanced squad means we seem to be relying on him for our only bit of creativity, and that is not fair on someone who is still very young. Whether we will see any more players return before our trip to Lincoln on Saturday, I suppose we will just have to keep taking it day by day, as Jones has told us.

At the time of writing this, I am none the wiser of whether we have appealed Docherty's red card and so as things stand, he will miss the next 3 league games. As long as Taylor is not injured, I expect him to return to the starting eleven against his old side. It could be interesting to see who comes out on top in the battle of the midfielders with Watt and Taylor similar type players.

Jones explained REG and Leaburn coming off was fatigue so as long as they have recovered right, I would anticipate both to start again on Tuesday. Additionally, I'd like to start to see Dixon involved in the match day squads. His pace and enthusiasm to impress could be a weapon off the bench. At least it offers us something different.

AMB
REG - Mitchell - Gillesphey - Edwards
Taylor - Coventry
Berry - Anderson
Godden - Leaburn

Reid, Laqeretabua, Small, A.Campbell, TC, Ahadme, Hylton

Burton have scored 15 league goals whereas we have scored 16. If we are to get 3 points, we simply must keep a clean sheet. It's now 10 of the last 12 league games we have conceded first...

  • Yep, must win, and 1-0 would probably do it. COYA!
  • Feeling dispirited and fear another defeat. 0-1. I think we will see Berry for Docherty. Don't think Taylor will start sadly.

Its quite simple.....if we concede first we will not win. When we score first (this season) we win.

And if we lose to the team that is bottom; have only beaten then then worst team in the league then we are in real trouble.

I fancy it will be a 1-1 draw.
  • Good write up Sage.

Understanding ,and hopefully Nathan Jones is not blowing smoke up our bums re Leaburn and Reg being replaced at Huddersfield.

  • Thanks for that Preview, Sage.

I haven't posted much of late for various reasons - one of them being that I am invariably lost for words when it comes to our performances recently.

I DO read all the post match thoughts & watch matches via a stream if we're unable to attend in person which are mainly the away treks further than the Midlands these days.

It goes without saying that long journeys/overnighters are getting increasingly  expensive as well as tiring but my appetite for supporting away from home has diminshed this season & I don't believe there's a need to explain why. And, sadly, I'm certain that I'm not alone.

My support for our club will always be 100%. That's a given.

But, for whatever reasons, what we're witnessing currently is unacceptable IMO.

As I write this, a young Ipswich player has just scored a stunning goal against the mighty Reds. His team are more than holding their own & the equaliser was well deserved. A club we've played against season after season is now 2 divisions above us and fighting to stay in the Land of Milk & Money. Good luck to them.

But for me, climbing to those heights is something I fear I may never see again unless something changes exponentially ; something that shows every Addick that the owners recognise that major changes must be made before it's too late ; before the faithful really lose their faith & our club's trajectory is clearly on a downwards path and gaining pace in that direction.

If the owners & the team overseeing their interests in SE7 haven't acknowledged the seriousness of the current situation then we really ARE in more trouble than we thought. I'd suggest that they talk directly with the fans, NOT trust the likes of Scott & Rodwell to relay their conversations with supporter representatives. They need to be fully aware of the concerns & the depth of despair felt by the lifeblood of this club before it's too late.

And before the January transfer window slams shut.

So, no surprise that I fail to offer any suggestions as to what's required ..that's not my job. My support is from the heart, not the head. I am merely one of thousands who give my time and money in support of our club and expect better for doing so.

Regarding the immediate future - the match only 2 days away in Burton - I'd suggest that another product of our esteemed Academy be seated on the bench with the prospect of entering the field of play when required in a brave effort to change the game. We've recently witnessed his speed, skill and determination so what is there to lose ?

    Step forward Kai Enslin.
From the heart Fanny, as always.  I always enjoyed reading about your match-day experiences so don’t hold back 😄
  • What are we, 2 wins in 12? They are 1 win in 15. 15 goals scored against our 16. Form suggests there isn’t much between us. Shocking to say that. Expect a draw, a come from behind again second half goal, 1-1.
  • Playing with 10 men in those conditions for 70 minutes on Saturday will have taken it out of the players, so he'll have to make a couple of changes. Hopefully one of them will see the introduction of Terry Taylor as a starter in place of Docherty, especially as Berry doesn't seem capable of playing a full match or, indeed, putting in the graft which is necessary at any level of football.

Losing this match is unthinkable but, given the way we're playing, it's a possibility that cannot be discounted. Let's hope that Burton are even worse than us.

It would be good to see us trying to pass the ball to each other and attacking down the flanks but I fear that's a forlorn hope given the manager's tactical rigidity and intransigence.

Although a lot of us have wrote the season off, it's still possible to at least give us some hope that all is not lost, if we get two wins out of the next two games. Unfortunately we are not doing the things that win games, scoring regularly and defending with purpose. The back four/three is picking itself, sadly, and their brittle nature will not alter until the return of Jones and Ramsay. The midfield, well Allan Campbell will probably step back in for Docherty and the experiment with Small will end and Tyreece Campbell may replace him. Up front, Leaburn and Godden, with Leaburns return we are at least creating chances, just not finishing them. A must win, anything else coupled with more excuses  about losing big players, when we are carrying a twenty eight man squad, and the fans may start to turn against Jones. Two one win to Charlton but that's not typed with any confidence.

I think this might be what Jones was alluding to in his interview after the game. He mention old issues from last season still here (my take on what he said - cant remember the exact quote) and I think he meant we have a player who he cant call upon as he's almost always injured......and nothing has changed since Jones took the job.
  • Have tickets but seriously can't face it .
  • Looking at both clubs form I can’t see anything other than a draw.

I don't think I have seen an away performance this season which I have been happy with. Even the wins. It has been better at home and Jones has to sort this out. If we hold out you have the feeling there will be a lapse at some point and if we take a lead you have a similar feeling. Without any disrespect intended, we should be going out to beat Burton well. But with us, even if we take a two goal lead, we don't seem safe.
