Can't believe Crayford is no longer sustainable. Thought loads still went there.

It's not paying customers that is the main issue - it's the lack of dogs which results in poor product for the bookies. It is a betting decision by Ladbrokes (Entain).

Suppose it's a bit like the pubs they say no longer sustainable when they mean can make a lot more profit as flats

Just read that Wetherspoons are to have another 10 open in the next 12 months.

Have great memories of going to see banger racing there in the 70's. They had a figure of 8 track so mayhem ensued. Last car able to drive won. Happy days!
What was the capacity back then.

Was there late last year, never a full race to be had.

    So sad

Our first house was in Crayford - when the kids were little, Saturday mornings it was free entry - bar opened early doors - only did low bets on the Tote - my son’s strategy - bet on first dog to poo on parade pre race - surprisingly successful 😃

And sod off anyone coming on here and giving it the negative about Greyhound racing - down at the traps and listening to them anticipating the race - they love it - in their genes

Fantastic to watch, so fast and graceful
Sod off to you giving it large. In their genes my arse.

What, a sight hound chasing something small and quick moving isn't in its genes?

That’s generally what it was like. It’s not the lack of support from punters why it’s closing

Some trainers asked to be opted out of the “difficult traffic days” - hence the start of a lack of runners. IMO this was in the back of the track owners’ minds for a long time - get it look like it died naturally.
A sporting facility replaced by flats/shops - we better get used to it.

The early photos above don't show how packed it got a bit later.
Basically it was full to the brim.
The end of the queue for the bar (about 100), backed into the food queue (about 50), which backed into "the queues" for the tote also about 100.
Great afternoon and evening in The Kings Head Bexley.

The lack of runners was partially created by the track.A shortage occurred when a lot of owners removed their dogs when Entain  took away the Saturday morning  and evening meetings.
I am convinced it was a planned strategy to close the track.

It was all to do with a lack of dogs in the end, not punters. This was driven by lower prize pots for races and then trying to fit in more races across all their venues, so there's always dogs "on" in the bookies. The move from 2 Saturday meetings to 1 really didn't help, and that really was the beginning of the end, though it gave them Sundays where the combination of dog racing and Sunday roast dinners was very popular.

Essentially Entain wanted this to happen

    THIS

But it’s underneath high power electricity cables - alternative use as residential is sketchy to say the least - but given that they allow houses on flood plains 🤷

Been going the last few months, they have been offered 15 million to keep it going by another company. ladbrooks owners don't care and don't want it to succeed. Apparently the track cant be built on for another 55 years 🤷 and the river runs under it.

My old man used to 'drive' Bangers at Crayford Stadium in the mid/late 70s (Also Iwade). his number was 136.

Rather than paint the car he used to stick page 3 girls all over the car!!

    Different times!

Our area is so badly served with things to do.

I probably saw him race...loved the banger racing at Crayford, my brother in law at the time was from Crayford.

Only thing I can remember was a well known driver called Peter Miles who my old man used to have a rivalry with. Was a really exciting night out for a little kid. Ditto the speedway, both had the unique smells of the fuel and noises that are noises passing into history.

Greyhounds was always gonna fade once hare coursing was banned. Horse racing is following a similar route currently.
