  • You have to be pretty deluded to think an openly homosexual referee won't receive abuse from the terraces.

They've been talking about this all morning o  Talksport & I don't understand why this is such big news.

It's 2025, I'd suggest that 95% of the population, myself included, don't care about his sexuality.

It seems to me that he's using this to gain sympathy from the general public to excuse poor choices he made whilst in a very high powered position.

Maybe controversial, but that's my view 🤷‍♂️
Go have a look at the comments under the news articles and you'll understand that a lot of people really do care, even if they are a minority they are very very vocal and abusive
But still a VERY small %.
Oh well that's okay then, as long as its only a few people subjecting him to abuse its all good.... right?

Fair point. Except THIS gem was literally a few posts later:

  • I mean not sure how his sexuality makes him take drugs and speak badly of someone publicly of those who he works alongside. Just ironic it’s brought out at the same time another ref is receiving criticism for bias…

I wouldn't pay much attention to comments written by anyone online. Most are probably written by fat, jobless losers.

Yeah can't think for one moment why someone would have to hide their sexuality in this day and age in football. Top banter. Well done you.
    🤣🤣 thank you

I couldn't care less for his sexual preferences. I have gay friends, doesn't bother me in the slightest, football and banter are part and parcel. Humor is the best medicine. Build a bridge mate

To dispel any ideas in your head, I am not homophonic.  People's sexuality does not change what you are as a person.

I feel I'm fairly well qualified to say there's no fucking way a gay footballer or referee would feel comfortable coming out in that environment.

The reveal does remind of the Spacey defence, and it might be a ploy of some sort. I don't know the guy so I don't think any of us has any insight on that.

What I do know is that football attitudes are not much different today than they were 20-30 years ago. One glance of Twitter today supports that, and the locker room 'banter' and fan behaviour I've seen over the last few years absolutely does too.

There's always going to be a percent which is exactly why people's sexuality is still an issue, that's exactly my point. It's all well and good saying "oh it's a very small percentage" or "it's much better than it used to be" (which are both true) but that is no consolation to the people who are taking horrendous abuse from that small percentage.

Not about being sensitive. If your ‘joke’ was a racist one would that be acceptable?

In my view, homophobia should be called out along with all forms of discrimination.

Appreciate you probably assume me to be ‘woke’ but we all need to do far better imo. Could start with ending the South London is wonderful chant at games too.

    Moan over!

But it wasn't was it, the smear culture of making everything offensive may appeal to some, but i couldn't give a fuck about it to be honest. It was a very funny line if you ask me, if David brent had said that on the Overlap, you'd all be pissing yourselves. Ian wrap yourself up in cotton wool and rock yourself to sleep mate, absolute flannel.

Smear culture? Do yourself a favour and stop digging. I didn’t attack you, was just trying to explain why what you posted was offensive as you seem not to realise.

I tried and now I give up as I have better things to do than argue on a football forum!

Enjoy the match tonight and let’s hope for 3 points!
  • I think he’s pretty brave tbh. Maybe he’s just doing the Sun interview for himself. To set the record straight about a turbulent time in his life.
He was stupid but he hasn’t killed anyone.
Hopefully he can find some peace now and move on from it all. And not appear on I’m A Celebrity Ice Skating Baking Masterchef House Swap.
  • Fuck him. He's a mug who failed to keep up the standards of his profession. Now he's making money from talk shows about what a victim he is. Victimhood society.

    It will never change.
As an aside, Bury away 2nd? game of season 2011ish, we're walking down to the gay quarter to have a beer.  It then was apparent there was a pride day going on.
We're seeing loads of t-shirts reading 'we're gay get over it', me and my mate were shaking our heads and saying "wtf really cares".  There were blokes dressed as fairies. We shrugged our shoulders.
    Great atmosphere in the boozers.

You have to be pretty deluded to think an openly homosexual referee won't receive abuse from the terraces.
Ryan Atkin came out in 2017. Don't know how much abuse he has received since. Coote unfortunately is in the mainstream media quite a bit more (so that won't help the matter).

About Atkin: He is a stonewall ambassador/ rainbow laces campaigner. There was an article 'From Linesman to Champion' where it mentions 'there was an alleged incident of homophobic abuse in a League One game' however that was towards a goalkeeper not a referee.

Only games I can find of him is mostly referring is NL, WSL,WC games (which if Coote is to get back into refereeing is the level he'll probably be at).
It is referenced he has officiated EFL games (but all I can find is fourth official gigs). Would like to think our fans would judge him on his ability (rather than sexuality) if he was given a Charlton (Men's) game.

Atkin was our fourth official 0-1 defeat to A.F.C Wimbledon and 3-0 win over Sutton. (and the referee for the Women championship 1-1 draw with Lewis).

Ha ha. Would it appease you to add a second verse about cock and greasy bumholes?

I love the ’South London is wonderful’ song. It’s quintessential English football culture. There are too many people with no sense of humour and/or too easily offended.

Personally,  I draw the line at The Addams Family song but even that’s not targeted at one individual, unlike the Wimblefon fans’ hatred of Karl Robinson a few seasons back. An end should be put to that kind of behaviour, yes. The ’South London is wonderful’ song is not aimed at one individual.

I feel sorry for the bloke, I hope he knows most people are on his side and gets some proper and tangible support. Whoever put the video out is lower than low. I have been pulled up before over my hatred of grasses and getting mixed up with me not wanting whistles to be blown but the two things are totally separate. He was videoed by someone he trusted and that trust has been violated ending with him publicly losing a job he would have dedicated shitload of time and made sacrifices for.

As for the utter waffle I've been reading about drugs and the black and white views. Keep your heads in the sand.

As for where a recreational drug came from and the abuse taking place in the supply chain. Don’t buy anything made in the far east. Or petrol for that matter. Or any meat.
And banking, dont invest any money. And probably best walk away from any pension funds you have too you will shit yourself when you see the practices of companies where a lot of that money gets invested

All my weed now comes from my own plants that ya know, are a plant that grows of its own doing, in the ground, naturally. Occasionally in a greenhouse like peoples tomatoes and bananas
    Delusional.

Absolutely- as if anyone grows bananas in a greenhouse!
